We have two sea days before we get to Fanning Island, an atoll about 1000 miles south of the Hawaiian Islands. The weather is partly cloudy but always warm and humid, mid 80s. I'm determined to get the blog caught up in these two days but there are so many things going on all the time, it's easy to become distracted.
Today we cross the International Date Line and instantly lose Friday, October 16. We go from the 15th to the 17th just like that. Now, tomorrow we'll get that day back but it becomes quite confusing. We have no Friday but two Saturdays. Since we're traveling east to west, one would think we would cross once, lose a day, then cross back later, gaining it back. But our route isn't a straight line nor is the International Date Line.
The International Date Line sits on the 180º line of longitude in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and is the imaginary line that separates two consecutive calendar days. It is not a perfectly straight line and has been moved slightly over the years to accommodate needs (or requests) of varied countries in the Pacific Ocean. Note how it
bends to include all of Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga and Tokelau in the Eastern Hemisphere.Immediately to the left of the International Date Line, the date is always one day ahead of the date (or day) immediately to the right of the International Date Line in the Western Hemisphere. Look at the pictures I've included. You can see it can be quite confusing. I thought about changing the dates, just making them consecutive and ignore the ship's calendar, but that would just confuse me by dealing with two different dates so I'm keeping with the ship. Just refer to the timeline on the left and note that there could be more than one date for an activity.
Yesterday I did get a few things done on the blog. Today I need to load all the pictures from the IPad onto the app and then transfer to the website for delivery to everyone. Things start out well. I make progress in the library while Karen runs some errands on the ship. She returns to tell me about the tropical fruit stand on the Lido which I think makes a good photo op so up I go to that event. I still continue with
my project and attempt an Internet connection to start downloading. No luck. We return to the library where the signal source is located and still no connection. The Internet director is there and tells me to try later, the connection is extremely slow. I write some more, have a snack then try again and find it works. I download pictures and manage to send out two days.
Dressing for our dinner, we join 3 other couples at a table. I order cod and Mom gets pork and cabbage stew. While we arrive early, service is slow and again we are late for the comedy show at 8. By late, I mean we arrive just as it starts but, as luck would have it, we get two seats off to the side. Tonight it's Don McEnery. Despite the rave reviews, I find him just so so. Mom stops at the photo gallery to check out the pictures we've had taken over the past few weeks. Some are nice but we'll wait and see. I think we're done for the night.
Tomorrow is Fanning Island and it will be Saturday.
