Sunday April 2nd
Sea world!
Today we’re off to Sea World Australia; this theme park is located just north of Surfers Paradise. We’re a little apprehensive about visiting this park on a Sunday, because it may be really busy. Jason booked a Seal encounter yesterday, so at 3:45 today we’re meeting some seals…cool! Infact at this park you can do lots of stuff with the animals…such as
1) be an animal trainer for a day
2) scuba dive with the sharks
3) snorkel with the sharks
4) dive with the seal lions
5) spend 45 minutes with the seals (this is what we did)
6) meet the polar bears - don’t know how that’d go, but it’d be cool
There are a few others, but I don’t remember.
So we got up, and did the breakfast thing in the parks excellent restaurant (beers and glasses of wine were only 3 bucks last night!) and were off to Sea World. The drive was about 15 minutes, without us getting lost! We past some megabuck boats and houses on the way there…there is a lot of money around here. So we arrive there, and there’s a huge line
buying tickets, but since we got discounted tickets at the RV Park we go right in…woohoo. There’s a dolphin show at 10:45 and we’re off. The dolphin show is probably the best one I’ve ever seen, certainly beating that dump Marine land back home. They really should close that place down. The dolphins did their thing for about 30 minutes and then we went to the seal show. While certainly not as exciting as the dolphins it was interesting, especially since we were going to meet them later. After that show things went at a slower pace, as we didn’t have to catch any more shows. There were two polar bears from Canada there, which were cool. Apparently they were found up north as abandoned cubs, and rescued. One thing about this place is the animals enclosures are done right, as they are really big. It sure looks like they care about the animals. Jason finally got Kirk and Wes to go on a roller coaster (Paulina chickened out at the last moment.) After the ride Wes has some look on his face, infact everyone waiting to go on the coaster looked at his face and were laughing (Jason and
Wes got the first car) They did a few other rides, like the log flume, etc…
Time for the seals. We arrive at the enclosure, and there are 5 other people there. The first seal that they bring up is an Australian fur seal, who weight 325 lbs; this little guy is solid! We get to feed this guy some fish, and he does a few tricks for us. Seals up close look very similar to dogs, and they almost seem to have the same mannerisms. The second seal we met was a pretty big (almost 700 lbs) California seal lion. This guy reminded me of Ruby big-time, this seal smiled on demand, just the same as Ruby. We got to feed him and he did some tricks for us as well. Next we met a New Zealand seal. This seal was a lot smaller, around 175 lbs, and has really heavy fur. Again we fed her, and she did some tricks for us. All in all it was an excellent experience, as everyone really enjoyed it. Seals sure are cool animals!
Tomorrow we’re off to the koala sanctuary, and Tangalooma Island to meet and feed wild dolphins.
Now that should be really cool and fun. I can’t wait!
More tomorrow
