Drove to Motueka to drop our bags off at the Happy Apple backpackers, then drove on to Marahau in the Abel Tasman National Park where we just made the 1:30pm water taxi to Torrent Bay further up the coast from where we would take the long walk back to the car (it took us 6 hours). This area of coastline is dotted with golden sandy beaches between rocky cliffs covered in jungle. It's possible to walk or kayak between beaches and camp overnight, though we didn't have time for that. Unfortunately the paths along the cliffs hid the beaches and the ocean from view for much of the walk, unless detours were made to the beaches. But we did get to a couple of nice beaches, and just made it back to the car for sunset ... read more

Auckland! Arrived here at about 9.30 pm and eventually got into my room at about 11pm. Fortunately for me the nice people there let me turn on the lights so i didn't kill myself tripping over the obstacle course set between the door and one available bed. Anyway. Spent the first day wandering the city, mostly up and down Queen St, the many shoppingy street nearby. Had a look at the north docks and such. Today i hunted down a second hand book shop and picked up the exact book i was hoping to find, which was nice. Lounged about for a while after that, found something to eat etc. Sidenote: Starbucks make the best hot chocolate ever. EVER. This evening i went up the Sky Tower. Got a reduction because i'm a student, which made ... read more

I'm in Hamilton! Hooray! Things have been going alright - difficult so far. My friend Erin and I are trying to find a place to live still. Sunday and Monday night we stayed in some of the college dorms, but they kicked us out this morning since other people have to move in. So we'll be staying in a hostel until we find a place. It's been stressful looking, but I suppose it could always be worse. At least I have her to look with me. And this is what I wanted to do. I've never had to find a place to live before, and I wanted to become more independent. Definitely got what I asked for! New Zealand is absolutely beautiful. We got here Thursday, and were doing Orientation until Sunday in Rotorua. Everywhere you ... read more

Two Days on the Track We caught the ferry at 8 am out from Picton to the start of the Track at Ships Cove. That was where Captain Cook holed up half a dozen times in the 18th century. We walked naturist then for a half day including a swim to Furnaux Cove. Ferry to Punga Resort for the night. A long day then, meeting only six people, over 27 km to the ferry home to Picton. Wow what an experience. Sunny with a little cloud for respite, through bush of many kinds and over the tops of the ridges of the hills. Just great or awesome, I should say. Wonderful, wonderful walking as we like it. Great views, not too many hills and wearing what we like. And the perfect weather.... read more

Another brief entry, and why not, i say. Really to let you know that i think Wellington is an absolutely awesome place full of life and charachter - everything a growing boy with few plans, needs to fill up the days. I guess the main news of my last few days was the dissapointment and annoyance of Monday when i discovered that underneath Frank's boyish and charming exterior lies a pedomter of truely mindblowing proportions. I cant bring myself to tell you either how many k's it has done, or how much less people are offering from what we paid, but the prognosis is not good. i had such a bad time the morning i found this out in fact that i ended up foolishly walking barefoot into wellington (along way) which resulted in much battering ... read more

Okay... the suspense is over. For those of you who didn't know, Queenstown is the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. As you can tell from my previous stories, the choice of activities in New Zealand aren't exactly tame, so this is saying a lot. I decided to save my biggest challenge for here. That's right.... I've just completed my bungy jump! I had planned to do it at the original bungy site, the Kawarau Bridge. Not too shabby at 43-meters. I stopped there yesterday and looked at the site and decided... ah to heck with it... go big or go home, so I decided to take the plunge and do the granddaddy of all bungys - The Nevis. This is the highest bungy site in New Zealand - 134 meters, that's 440 feet! The other unique ... read more

Mon. 20th.Feb. In front of our lodge is the "Gondola" cable car, and also the launching pad for paragliders. At the back of us is Queenstown Hill, which at 900 m. is even higher. We were told that this is the one to climb for spectacular views, so off we go, and we weren't disappointed. Queenstown, spread out before us was awesome - a full 360 deg. view, with no tourists in sight. The paragliders were indeed beneath us, so the 2 hour slog was worth it. Luckily the rain held off until the afternoon, so we spent the rest of the day browsing around the shops in town. Tues. 21st. Another beautiful day, not too hot, so we just amble around the park and the lakeside. Lots of boats, coming and going, so we people ... read more

-- NEW ZEALAND -- I'll update this blog as I travel around the North and South islands of the country. The story so far: -- MANUKAU, AUCKLAND -- ...seeing as I landed here in Auckland NZ on the 28th January, my recollection of events are blurred and incoherent though probably more consise. In any case, the fact that my intended three week stay in NZ has already extended to more than double that time, says much for itself... ... I departed Rarotonga ready. Ready to move on. In part because of my discomfort with the familiarity of the locals, partly also at the lack of company and a sense of idyllic boredom, but also because I had, and have always had, a really good feeling about New Zealand. I was not mistaken. The closer our ... read more

Due to Popular Demand This Blogspot has Been Updated Ok I just got lazy and didn't have the time!! A big chunk of my time in Brisbane was left out because the last blogspot cocked up! Anyway I decided that i was unable to find a job in Brisbane, and wouldn't have been to keen on working there anyway. Its not that i didn't like the city, it just didn't feel like a place i would have wanted to spend a fair chunk of my time. On a spur of the moment i decided i may as well go over to New Zealand while i still had the money. I booked the flights and the Kiwi Experience tour. As with tradition in such circumstances i had my Brisbane leaving party - we had a few ... read more
