Monday morning we drove to Fox Glacier and Gillespie's Beach where we walked the beach, watched the sea, ate lunch and attempted a nap amid the bugs. We continued on to a town called Hokitika where nearly all of the jade is mined. After finding a place to sleep off the grid we popped back into town the next morning for a visit to the jade factory and a shower at the local pool where we met a friendly local with much wisdom to share. Our next destination was Punakaiki where the famous Pancake Rocks are found; these are somewhat of a mystery as it is not entirely known how they were formed. The Tasman was near high tide and entertained us with its mighty waves crashing on the rocks and into the blowholes. It was ... read more

Along the west coast we stopped at a tiny little village called Barrytown. There is nothing else there other than the pub/guest house we stayed at really and we had a v random fancy dressed night… That is the disadvantage of Stray actually is stays in some v random places and you have no choice but stay there too. The cross dressing night was actually quite fun but the fact that we had no choice but attend put me off a little. We then stopped at a few sights for photos along the way to Franz Joseph Glacier. Franz Joseph Glacier, one of the few hundred in the area, is one of the biggest and most accessible and so is the one that most people go to visit. I did a full day hike up it. ... read more

We felt the urge to venture further up the coast to Golden Bay, and stayed at Pohara Top 10 campsite for a night. Lovely location, right on the beach, and perfect for accessing the Abel Tasman National Park, not that we did on this occasion, but you can... The journey to Golden Bay looks deceptively short on the map, but the winding road up the Takaka Hill and down the other side adds quite a bit to the journey time and is a good test of whether you've secured all the drawers and junk in the van. Great views from the top of Takaka Hill though, from Hawkes Lookout, all across the valley towards Tasman Bay and Nelson. Golden Bay stretches right up to the top of the South Island, ending in the Fairwell Spit, a ... read more

Maybe not dirty, but certainly quick: We’ve obviously lost steam on this blogging thing - so much has happened since Uncle Chris came and left. In a nutshell: Friends Alistair, Diane and their two beautiful, wonderful kids came to spend Christmas here. The 25th was understated - rotten turkey replaced by KD, walk in town wearing shorts and t-shirts, ultimately invading friends who generously fed and wined all nine of us with no advance warning. On Boxing Day we headed up to Karamea where Diane, kids and I hung out at a swish lodge on the coast while Paul and Alistair walked the Heaphy trail for four days. New Year’s Eve back in Reefton was a blast - the town gathered at the gas station just before midnight where a brass band played a couple of ... read more

Ich muss ... read more

... read more

Before I get to that, let me tell you about Okarito. Beautiful wee campsite close to the shore, no shop, no cafe, but jungle behind, sea in front, a lagoon to swim in and a nice man who left me 2 beers in a fridge. This has nothing to do with toilet love, incidentally. I stayed a couple of nights and enjoyed what the highly organised NZ tourist industry tends to trample with its emphasis on concentrating buses and the omnipresent campervans into the scenic highlights, which consequently lose their charm. More swims and camps by lakes going well too, though the bugger sandflies are now showing up and chomping me. I've a lovely big bite on my eyebrow. What was supposed to be a highlight was Franz Joseph glacier, but it was just far too ... read more

Remember the last entry? Where we told you about our fun had in the children's play area on the flying fox? Well you can imagine the grins that emerged on our faces on reading that the biggest flying fox in New Zealand which was next to the biggest swingbridge in New Zealand, was a few kilometers up the road just near to Westport. We made haste towards Buller Gorge and happily presented our fare for a tandem ride on the fox which also granted us free entry to the goldmine area there, the fault line from a huge earthquake, and a chance to look at a big tree. My pre-fox giddiness reached a premature peak on my finding a mushroom I had decided was pure fiction - see the photo. I really thought that a red ... read more

OK, so this is obviously being typed up in retrospect, but I did keep a diary of sorts through the ten days I spent with the Hiking New Zealand crew, and here it is, all typed up, and (hopefully) with photos. Day 80: Flora Saddle to Rock Shelter: Meeting the group "When you see someone putting on big boots, you can be sure adventure is about to happen" (Winnie the Pooh) I was really apprehensive about the whole group hiking thing, but I managed to drag myself out of bed bright and early and down to Nelson information centre, where I met the guide, Jaron, an friendly and rather enthusiastic guy who turned out to be the youngest person on the trip at twenty-four. Next to arrive was Shaun, a quiet Welsh guy who worked for ... read more

Headed off for our West Coast drive with various stops on the way! We went to Cape Foulwind seal colony first which was ace! There's just all these seals laying about on the rocks not doing a whole lot and there were lots of baby ones!! Well cute and really cool to see actually! We saw some swimming in the sea and they can go really fast, I dian't realise how fast actually! Next we headed to Punakaiki for it's Pancake style rocks and blow holes. The rocks were like pancakes and were quite impressive but again they are just rocks! It's not like you can add syrup and eat them - now that would be impressive! ha ha! They did specialise in Pancakes in the cafes accross the road though! Good old tourist con - ... read more
