We left Nelson at 8:15 heading towards Greymouth an excellent hot day. The bus went through Hope Saddle and Buller Gorge following some spectacular scenery we stopped in the Paparoa National Park where some of us took an hours walk along a good coastal path and we saw New Zealand Fur seals the bus met up with us at the end of the path and proceeded towards Greymouth. We stopped once more at a place call Punakaki which have blow hols and pancake rocks the pancake rocks look like animals. From there we went to Greymouth where I stopped in the Noah’s Ark Hostel which had rooms named after animals I was in the tiger room which had Rosie from Edinburgh in, the wall had a picture of a tigers head looking out at us. 2 ... read more

Monday While everyone else at the camp site presumably got up early to catch the 3am ferry (why??) we had a leisurely breakfast and a return trip up Mt Victoria for some decent views over Wellington, since the previous two days had been so cloudy and windy. At around 11.30 we headed to the ferry terminal to check in and load up before our 1pm departure. Most of the people lined up to board were other camper vans and although Max doesn't quite match the luxory of most of the rental ones, we were glad he was converted because it made our fare much cheaper. The crossing was pretty smooth and we spent it reading, watching Bride and Prejudice (well, me anyway) and then taking in the spectacular scenery as we entered the Malborough Sounds prior ... read more

Drove out to the West Coast to go make a knife. Stayed in Greymouth at a very cool Backpacker called the Global Traveler Backpacker. It had a nice african feel and look. In the morning we headed up to Berrytown to a couples place that run a knife making buisness there. We were one of two couples making knifes that day which ended up being perfect. Started of with heating and banging to shit out of a piece of metal to form the shape and harden the blade area. Then we cut the handles out and places them and copper bits to form the handle. Next we did a ton of sanding on belt sanders. Ending the whole thing with hand sanding. Durring breaks we threw some axes and saw their baby sheep. At the end ... read more

Next we headed out to the West Coast through Reefton and out to Greymouth. In Greymouth we went to the Monteiths Brewery and took the tour. Unlike Coors, it was not free but it was only NZ$10. They showed us the small brewery and told us its history. It was started in Reefton durring the gold rush and then moved out to the West Coast to combine with a bunch of other small breweries to for the West Coast brewery. Monteiths was the one that stayed popular and the only one they ended making in the end so they changed the name. It is now only run by 10 people which includes the couple tour guides. They showed us the bottle depalitizer and told us how the mechanic built it out of a car frame and ... read more

Steffin and Becs wanted to have one last hurrah at the beloved Greymouth beachfront house before they packed up the final boxes and moved out. We had barely met them, but in typical Kiwi warm hospitality we were invited along to join them at a hāngi. A hāngi is a method of cooking in an outdoor earthen pit oven which involves digging a pit, heating stones over a bonfire, placing wire baskets of food on top of the stones, and covering everything with earth for several hours before lifting the hāngi. We had a great time at a hangi held by New Zealand’s honorary consul to New England in Canterbury, New Hampshire prior to departing for New Zealand. Now we were excited and prepared to attend our first hangi on the land where it originated. The ... read more

DISCLAIMER - Brewery tour tonight...'nough said. It's now 1AM on Thursday. So, my latest challenge has been crossing the street on foot in a country that drives on the left (wrong) side of the road. If you're not careful, you'll get your a** hit. I've been a little delinquent in posting an update...schedule has been packed, and I haven't had easy access to a computer. Realizations of the past few days: lots of folks from other countries - especially Europeans - aren't big fans of Americans. I know this is probably an obvious point, but you don't really realize it until you are surrounded by folks from other countries. That said, I've managed to get along very well with the Europeans who I've met, but it's interesting to get their take on things. I had one ... read more

Well, it’s Mel here - happy to be home after 5-weeks away and feeling quite energised about getting back to work on Monday… My job is very topical at the moment - one of the major foci of my work as a Nutrition Health Promoter is the prevention of obesity. Rates of overweight and obesity, and the associated costs to the health system, are rising in New Zealand (and in the States). So obesity is a primary concern for many organisations, groups and individuals. While I’ve been away the issue has been in the media often, both here and in Missouri. The way my vocational days were structured obesity was also the main issue I studied; I was grateful for the chance to visit many schools and city/county health departments which offered very relevant comparisons to ... read more

I will plan to make this blog a little shorter than the other one.(you know short and sweet thats me)! Actually its that I don't have the attention span to sit and write and tincker on the computer when I could be enjoying the cool hostel we are at with a good book and coffee . It is so hard when you don't know what you have in store from day to day as far as the town and accomadations. Sometimes you wished you would have pushed on and others you wished you didn't have to go. Just after finishing the blog and before heading out ... read more

We enjoyed a great weekend away on the west coast at conference. We arrived on Saturday morning and spent the day finalising our presentations in the comfort of a bach over looking Lake Kaniere. Saturday night was dinner at Shantytown with a theme of 'going for gold' - we all decided to wear gold medals and were not alone as we found out on arrival at Shantytown. The evening was lots of fun, we spent time with our sponsoring clubs and got to know everyone a little better. After dinner it was back to our bach, the 6040 Missouri team were staying nearby, so it turned into a late night as we swapped stories and learnt a little more about what to expect on our journey. Sunday morning we joined conference and had a brief introduction ... read more

By now it had really started to rain and we began to realise just how much of an outdoor place New Zealand really is. Throw a bit of bad weather in and you become lost as to what to do. We stopped briefly in Hokitika for a coffee and a trip to yet another massive beach that was covered in driftwood before heading on up to Greymouth. The plan had originally been to go down Arthur’s Pass. This was the road heading inland between Hokitika and Greymouth. It is meant to be really scenic and have lovely views of the mountains. Unfortunately by this time the mist and rain had completely blocked out the mountains so it would have been a waste of time taking that road. Instead we arrived in rainy Greymouth and found ourselves ... read more
