3rd March 2009 - CYCLING TO HARIHARI.....OH MY - THOSE HILLS!!! We left Hokitika and headed south - or so we hoped. There were no sign posts leading out of Hokitika and so we just pedalled over the bridge and hoped we’d got it right. It was a 50-50...not such bad odds! I didn’t feel too bad today - well better than on the first day anyway and apart from the bum and crotch area hurting after the first 5 minutes, the rest of me felt strong. Good job too as we had a fair way to go! It was 26km to Ross - the first town. It wasn’t all flat either but the hills were manageable and we pushed on at a good pace. We stopped a couple of times for water breaks but that ... read more

Eerste dag rijden. Niet inheemse dieren he. Het is hier apart rijden. Wat hier een highway is, ... read more

As we were driving for quite a while we decided to call it a day. Accommodation was pricey where we were heading (Fox and Joseph Glaciers) so we didn't want to be there just yet. We passed a backpackers on the West Coast highway called 'The Old Church; It looked like the religious version of the Bates' Motel. What a find and worth a quick mention here... We were greeted by grungy looking Frank, an eccentric German bloke in his mid 40s . He could talk for England! The place was really charasmatic - a wonderful open plan lounge with wooden floor, open fire, pool table and cosy sofa. The kitchen overlooked the river which was bubbling away just outside. The backpackers was nestled in a green valley right next to the river surrounded by its ... read more

We stayed with two other guests from Sydney in Reefton, and they told us about two B&Bs near the glaciers which we booked at the local I-Site. We left Reefton and stopped in Greymouth, which was a nice sized town that reminded us of both Aberdeen and Bellingham in Washington State. Continuing on, we visited Ross Gold Fields, a mining town that mined gold up until the 1980s. There is a nice museum and hike around the mines; plus a gift shop with everything you could want for a guy named Ross. We stayed in a B&B on a farm a the base of a still-snowcapped mountain - Mount Adam Lodge. It was a beautiful setting - not really in any town, just out in the New Zealand wilderness. We talked for hours with the owners ... read more
