Well, so much for finishing Italy! I wrote Part 1 and completely forgot that I hadn't done the rest! So anyway, we caught a train at night from Florence to Naples, and eventually made our way out of the station and through the very dodgy station area to our hotel, which was nice and close, though through a very stange little door-within-a-door, into a courtyard where residents parked their car and up a pay-per-ride lift! Luckily the hotel was run by the most charming old Italian man called Mario. For some reason (though we were paying very little) we were given a suite, with 2 bedrooms, great bathroom, eating area etc all with marble floor and the hugest bed we'd ever seen! It was honestly about 2x the width of a normal double bed. Mario brought ... read more

Hey everyone! I hope you all are doing well? My sister asked my to update my blog with some pictures etc so here it is... I don't have a whole lot to tell you guys right now. Since returning from Thailand I haven't been feeling 100%-I was having stomach pains and feeling nauseous at times. This past Sunday though the pain was too much so I had first hand experience with the Dunedin Emergency Department. I spent much of Sunday in the emergency where they ran a bunch of tests, took x-rays of my stomach and gave me some really nice pain medicine-except I don't know how often the doctor puts interveneous (however you spell it!) in because it hurt like a bugger! And taking it out was another story...my friend Helen was grossing out and ... read more

After a couple of nights in Oamaru, where we were lucky enough to see 7 rare yellow-eyed penguins from a hide above Bushy Beach, we continued on our drive south towards Dunedin. We stopped off at the famous Moeraki boulders and spent an afternoon at Shag Point (lots of NZ fur seals, two more yellow-eyed penguins and large colonies of Steward Island and Spotted Shags). Just before we arrived in Dunedin we decided to spend one night in the gloriously named "Seacliff Asylum"...we'll paint you a picture: ...black stallions roaming wild...sheds full of 1920's rusting cars...the ruins of seacliff mental hospital...rumours (found on the internet) that 37 women died there in a mysterious fire in 1942...no locks on the doors...a strange door into our room blocked by a wardrobe whose back had been bashed in (apparently ... read more

howdi from NZ Its been a while since the last one, entirely due to my own laziness, so this one's gonna be a belter. I've now been 2 weeks in NZ, still entirely in the south Island. For most of the time, Cat and I have been driving round all the sites. Let me divulge some of the highlights that we've seen/eaten/drunk/swam with. Christchurch: a cool town that gets bigger and better everytime I go back there. There's loads of places to eat and drink, which is great 'cause the food at the YMCA reminds me of college. A jazz festival is starting up. My mate Rob who I'm going back to stay with wouldn't forgive me if I didn't use the word 'chic' when describing the place. We didn't stay long here as we were ... read more

Hey there everyone... Well only 9 days until I will be sitting on a plane heading to Thailand! I am started to get excited for the trip although I do admit I am a little nervous about going alone to a place where I don't speak the language at all! It shall be interesting...so this is my last Dunedin post until I return and I've actually done something other than work and surf to tell you about! ***I am going to try and attach some photo's but no guarantee's-this computer is VERY slow to download! Yesterday I went on a tour thru the Catlins which is located on the bottom of the South Island. The Catlins is quite a tourist attraction due to the lush rainforests, beaches and wildlife. I did the tour with a girl ... read more

Hey everyone...I'm not sure if this will be a repeat blog as I started a blog today but ran out of time waiting for the photo's to download so I cancelled the blog...BUT Aunt Marja responded to the Thailand news (thank-you for the note!) already so...if this is a repeat blog, I apologize!! So...as you've probably gathered I am heading off to Thailand April 2-28th. I am flying into Bankok and will be leaving from Phuket. I am getting excited about heading there...tomorrow I get my shots and malaria pills so that should be a fun day!! I have no set plans for the trip which I was told is the best way to travel when in Thailand...wish me luck! As for what's been going on here in Dunedin...not a whole lot. I've been doing a ... read more

Well I am still in Dunedin and have a feeling I may be here for awhile. There is quite a bit to do around here and because I am working at the Backpackers I am able to do some tours and surf lessons for free or discounted which is really nice. Working at the Backpackers has been a blast so far. I was warned by the staff who had left that you can get addicted to this sort of lifestyle and she's right. You definetly meet interesting people...I am working in the office taking bookings for rooms and tours, quite fun. Fernanda (the English gal)and I are sharing office hours and she's quite a bit of fun. I start netball tomorrow with a Kiwi girl Jenna which should be a lot of fun (not that I ... read more

Yesterday was Shiri's last day here. Unfortunately it was also the most uneventful... Dunedin is not very interesting. We strolled in the town, saw another botanic garden with an aviary (birds zoo), we had some music in the park, nice lunch (in a restaurant for a change). This morning we kissed goodbye and she started the long journey home. Then I started the short journey to Otago Peninsula. It's a peninsula close to Dunedin with some nice things: first, the only "chateau" in NZ. Real lovely one, build about 130 years ago by a show off reach banker (financed by his wife's money aparently...) Then there are the wonderful views on the narrow piece of sea between the shore and the peninsula (what's the word for that in english?). And of course, the animals. I went ... read more

Hey everyone, I am alive...I apologize for not updating this sooner...and at the rate I'm going if this blog doesn't go thru (this is my third attempt) I will "snap!" Any way... It is the second rainy day here in Dunedin but I have a feeling it should clear up. For the most part the weather has been nice here and sunblock has become my new lotion of choice...the sun is definetly more intense here then in Canada. I have spent the past week looking for part time work and not having a lot of luck. I have been offered cleaning jobs that entail 4hrs of work a week but nothing more. I will be starting at the hostel Wednesday where I will be working two-three mornings a week for about 2hrs changing bedding...not the nicest ... read more

We arrived in Dunedin around 3pm, we must have floored it as it's supposed to be a 7 hour journey. No one we have met has come to or has any plans to go to Dunedin. It's a pretty big city and as far as I can tell it's famous for rugby and beer. The 'Otago Highlanders' play here at the infamous 'House of Pain' which is meant to be brutal on match days. The Speights brewery here is the oldest in the land, and as I've become quite partial to a pint of Speights during our trip here I suggested to Fiona that we go to a brewery tour later, she agrees tentatively! We found our hostel fairly easily, actually by mistake. It's fair to say it has seen many better days and could do ... read more
