This weekend we visited Mount Sunday, after a journey of approx two hours from Rangiora. The road finishes and a rough track continues for approx another half an hour, past Lake Clearwater and Lake Camp. In front of you stand the snow capped mountains. This is the area where Lord of the Rings was filmed. The area has hardly any population but does get visitors from the cruise ships and visitors interested in seeing the location of the filming. It is soooooo peaceful, you can hear the sound of skylarks and running water but nothing else. At night the sky here is like nowhere else I have been, it is like a black velvet cloth with a million diamonds scattered over it, stunning. The lodge where we stayed was home to a rare breed of reindeer, ... read more

Tour Guide: “So which one is your favorite character in Lord of the Ring? How many times did you watched it? 5 times? 10 times? Me: “Errr…. Sorry, I don’t really watched LOTR… I’m only here to take pictures” *grinning* Tour Guide:”Err…. Well, that’s alright mate… Sometimes we do have people like you joining” *smiling* Another Passenger: “Yah well I saw it like 10 times or so” *obviously a die hard LOTR fan* I was having difficulty finding another activity to kill the time in Christchurch. Kaikoura? Nah, experience is too similar with Akaroa. Hanmer Spring? Nah, don’t feel like jumping to hot pools. Nelson? Too far. I ended up finding this LOTR Edoras tour which happened to be discounted 50% on bookme.co.nz (from original base price of 235 NZD). The irony is – I ... read more

The Lord of the Rings as you may know was filmed most entirely in NZ. One of the scenes show an amzing landscape with moutnains. Well we went there yesteraday. One of the scenes was filmed at Mount ... read more

Today we continued our tour of Lord of the Rings movie locations by heading out to Mount Sunday, location for King Theodon's castle at Edoras. The weather was gloomy when we left the campsite but seemed to brighten a little as we drove away from the area. When we turned onto a quiet but still sealed road, I felt it was high time I took the helm and had a bit of a drive. The road was nice and straight so I had nothing complicated to do until the sealed road ran out and we suddenly found ourselves bumping along on a coarsely gravelled track. As our campervan company actually recommend Moutn Sunday as a must-see, then we felt sure the road couldn't be too bad. We were wrong! The road got progressively worse and my ... read more
