Geo: -41.5116, 173.957Day 18, Blenheim to Westport After a day of showers we wake to a bright sunny day as we say good bye to NZ's sunniest region (Marlborough) and drive the Queen Charlotte route to Havelock. This road is winding and very narrow and Debi is not impressed, it does however offer some spectacular views of the many sounds along the way. On arriving in Havelock the Green Shell Mussel capital of the world, we drive down to the wharf where there are plenty of restaurants offering this local delicacy and also a mail run cruise that will take you along many of the sounds we just viewed, however we keep driving as Debi is queasy from the drive we have just completed.Soon we pass Canvastown a gold mining area where thousands tried to get ... read more

After leaving Nelson I made my way to Marlborough Sound and Picton. I decided to take a trip on the mail boat which travels to different destinations withing the Sound to deliver the mail as most places are not accessible by road so water is the only way they can get mail. A lot of the children who live in these remote places are often schooled at home as access to schools is difficult. We visited about ten different places which included the bay where Capt. Cook landed. The whole area is very beautiful, a lot of the homes there are holiday homes and can only be reached by boat. The sun shone most of the day, on the way back everyone was out on the water, people taking part in small yacht races, sailing, jet ... read more

Hello everyone. I am in Marlborough over looking the sounds. The sun is shining and the scenery stunning. Everyday is better than the day before. I have horse trekked at Lake Tekapo, have kayaked on the Tasman sea. We saw whales, seals and a baby penguin. I just want to grasp everything and bring it back with me. Catching on a camera is impossible but i am doing my best. Just off to sample a few of my favorite wines. Its such hard work but I am doing my best!!! It would not be polite otherwise would it? Christmas will be out on the sounds then boxing day on a boat in Nelson. Well Happy Christmas everyone and enjoy the cold and rain. He He He. Lots of lovexxxx... read more

After we left the west coast we headed north towards the Abel Tasman National Park. The road took us inland along the Buller River and the drive was again another spectacular one, I have lost count the amount of times I have said 'oh wow' whilst in NZ. The journey north also had a funny and unexpected twist as we came to the aid of two German travellers who had stupidly run out of petrol. The funniest thing was they had picked up two hitchhikers to help pay for petrol and then run out on route! ha ha. We gave the girl a lift to the next fuel stop and as she said she was going to hitch back and it was getting dark we did the right thing and drove her back to her friends. ... read more

Freitag, 2.

Wine tasting in the Marlborough Region, now this could be really interesting or just plain boring so I won’t apologise for the detail. You have been warned. Contrary to popular belief most of the wineries in the Marlborough region are actually in Renwick and not Blenheim like all the guide books suggest. We had put a side one day to get around as many places as we could, really you need 2 to 3 days to have a good go as there must be over 100 cellar doors round about the place. Marlborough’s signature grape is the Sauvignon Blanc however most white varieties can be produced to varying levels of success as we came to find. Brancott Estate, formally Montana is the largest exporter of wine in New Zealand and was the one that we were ... read more

Yesterday, we took a drive to Kaikoura - famous for whale watching. Unfortunately it was a grey and windy day, so we were satisfied with viewing some seals up close and having a yummy pub meal. On a clear warm day it would be a beautiful area, a lovely coastal town with mountains close by. This morning, we visited the resident pets at the B&B - some Alpacas and miniature horses. Milly the Alpaca is very friendly and greets you with a kiss. Unfortunately she got a bit spooked by the male in the herd and ended up spitting in my face! But she is still very cute... Then we headed back to Picton for a spot of shopping - they have quite a number of nice gift type shops featuring locally made products. In the ... read more

In summary - we survived! QCT conquered by the Browns.... Day 1 15kms - Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge Woke to bitterly cold howling winds in Picton (130 km/hr). Early start to catch water taxi - unfortunately the seas were too rough to stop at a wildlife santuary island we were meant to visit, so it was straight to Ship Cove for us. The walk was enjoyable, tough uphill and steep downhill to start the day - then pretty easy after that. Some nice views of the Sounds and beautiful green rainforest. We arrived at Furneaux Lodge at around 2pm, had a hot choc and coffee on the verandah before heading to our waterfront studio to firstly stretch and then have a well deserved arvo nap! Dinner was in the lodge, 3 course meal with bottle ... read more
