We started out early for a 10 hour drive from Nelson to Franz Josef. Fortunately I am finally adjusted to driving on the left and not nearly as terrified when Mike is in the driver seat (on the right side of the car). The drive was very scenic, though now I am convinced there is not a part of this country that is not beautiful. Our intent was to hike on the Franz Josef glacier our first day in the city, but we woke to a torrential downpour of rain. Talking to our guides, all visits to the glacier were canceled for the day as the rain we were experiencing was just the beginning, there was a forecast for 12 hours of rain. It turns out that Franz gets an average of 500 centimeters of rain ... read more

Franz Joseph tonight. Had an amazing day - the sitters became the doers. Travelling down from Greymouth to Franz Joseph we stopped at Whataroa for a picnic lunch and 6 of the girls were lucky enough to take the helicopter glacier flight from there as we discovered Franz Joseph was closed because of low cloud. It was awesome and breathtakingly beautiful but I missed out on both the flights and the glacier walk. However, managed the walk up to Franz Joseph glacier and got fantastic photos which I will upload soon. Finding I'm a bit occupied to do a good job of this. Hopefully Queenstown will be a good chance to relax and catch up. I made a huge bowl of Salmon and Broccoli Risotto tonight for some of the students - it's a bit like ... read more

Franz Josef We set off from Greymouth and headed south to Franz Josef town. The drive took us about 2 hours and was a pleasant drive with the usual winding roads up and down the mountains. We arrived just after 12 and went to the info centre. Turns out they only have one camp site for tents here and was the most expensive so far. For this reason we decided to get a cabin at the Rainforest Retreat for $10 more. It meant we could sort out all of us gear and get a good night sleep before our glacier hike. We checked into cabin 505 which had 2 bunk beds, very strange as the woman asked us if we wanted a double but oh well. Went over to use the internet, when I realised it ... read more

Well I'm a good week or so behind writing this blog - I'm currently in Te Anau with no way to upload any photos so I'll add those later. I've skipped writing about a few places - after crossing the Cook Strait on a ferry between the two islands, we headed down the west coast of the South Island through what has been my favourite part of New Zealand so far: Franz Josef-Wanaka-Queenstown, just off the Fiordland National Park, which has some incredible scenery. We pulled into Franz Josef, a tiny resort for ice climbing and hiking on the Franz Josef glacier. It literally was tiny - the place consists of no more than about 5 buildings on one road - a lodge to book the activities, a bar, youth hostel, supermarket and a pool spa. ... read more

Day 39 12th October - Franz Josef Glaciers Heli-Hike, Skydive, Lake Matterson & finally onto Greymouth. Today was one hell of an action filled day! We woke up really early and made our way to the Heli-hike office, from there we were weighed and then we crossed over the road to a little shack to get our boots and special coats on. After a quick word or two regarding safety, we were split us into three groups (we were group number 2), each group got on to their helicopters and made there way over to the Glacier. The helicopter ride was not what I thought it would be like, I thought helicopters would feel really bumpy, but actually it was super smooth! The views were just stunning! We flew over the Glacier and made a nice ... read more

The road to Franz Josef was pretty cool and we arrived just as the mist and the rain set in. The one difference between here and home is they actually know what the weather is doing so we were advised to wait it out for a day until the skies cleared. This basically involved a lot of brandy and backgammon! We did manage to nip out in the rain for a hot chocolate and a muffin and then we were very kindly given a free hot tub for an hour courtesy of spaceships - just what you need when every part of your body is frozen! After a day of being stuck in the van we were grateful to wake up to clear blue skies and made our way up to the glacier. We decided to ... read more

So the theme of this blog is rain as that is all it did in the three days we stayed in Franz Josef! Wednesday morning rolled around and Steve and I were both suffering from cabin fever having spent so much time in the car without doing any real exercise so we decided whatever the weather we would head out. Unfortunately the weather in Franz Josef on Wednesday was serious rain. Anyway after having eaten some lunch we headed up to the glacier. Our original idea had been to walk up via the track from the town however we were told the track had been closed as a result of the weather. So we drove the car to the main car park and set off. I think the photos from that day say it all as ... read more

4 August - Franz Josef - Glacier region Leaving Greymouth The heavy rain, thunder and lightening woke us about 5.30am in Greymouth, it sounded like it was never going to stop! We left Greymouth about 8.45am and drove south to Franz Josef, the Glacier Region of the West Coast. It was still raining heavily when we arrived and we managed to check into our hotel early, about 11am. Franz Josef We are staying in the Glenfern Villas, about 3k north of the town. This is the best accommodation on this trip so far (all have been great though). We have a one bedroom wooden chalet style villa so it has a lovely spacious lounge, full kitchen and large bathroom and a few extra luxuries like really good bodywash and shampoos with Manuka Honey in them and ... read more

Lets see... In Dunedin I didn't get up to much of note. I found a nice cheap hostel for $16, the cheapest I'd found anywhere, and spent 4 nights. Not because there was much going on but because I wanted to relax and recharge my batteries. I walked around the first night and caught up on some emails before an early night. The second day I walked all over town to the free museums, doing errands, going to a butterfly exhibit and driving out to the Otago Penninsula. I spent the majority of the day out there going on hikes hitting up Sandfly Bay, where I not only saw zero penguins, but I got chased by a fur seal. These things are a lot meaner and faster than they look. It was exciting but scary as ... read more

It was an early start for shuttle bus to the train station to catch the TransAlpine across to Greymouth. There was a steady stream of hail stones falling as we boarded amongst the massed ranks of Japanese, who were fitting the train trip into their 5 day - it’s Thursday so it must be Arthur’s Pass - NZ itinerary. The fact that most were sound asleep within an hour of leaving, suggested that a combination of the itinerary and the early start had been too much for most. The hail had turned to snow by Arthur’s Pass, which made for a pretty pit stop amongst the peaks. The majority of the train jumped ship on to buses at this point - obviously there was no time in the schedule for the delights of Greymouth. The weather ... read more
