Goodbye NewZealand. The time has come to say goodbye to this extraordinarily beautiful island. It had to end some time. I had the most wonderful 10 days here. Being an English speaking country made it all that more easier and enjoyable as you could talk to locals and understand the commentaries much better. I was very skeptical about going on a tour with Haka Tours as it was targeting a younger group, below 30s and was a bit afraid that I would be left out while the others went on bungy jumping, para gliding and freefall jumps. The alternative was to tour with older people probably Chinese or Japanese. That is another thing you notice, the number of Chinese tourists. With the increasing number of middle class what happened with Japan in the 70s and 80s ... read more

Dear all, After my last message we stayed the night in Kaikoura and then left the next morning to head for Hanmer Springs. We arrived there and the small little town was packed solid as it was Saturday. We spent the day exploring the small town and enjoying the beautiful sun. Sunday morning we got up early and went to the springs. They are natural volcanic hot springs that range in temperature from a lovely 36 degrees to a slightly too hot 42 degrees. The sun was out and we spent a couple of hours there. Apparently the water is very good for your skin. Sunday evening the sky went a black colour and soon it was raining, it hasn't stopped since. All of last night it rained really hard and our journey back to Christchurch ... read more

It’s a bit of a pain getting anywhere from Hokitika. For Samoa I have to take a flight to Christchurch, then another flight to Auckland, and then another flight from there to Samoa. Same in reverse for the return. Seeing I had to go through Christchurch and Auckland anyway I figured I may as well spend a couple of days in each to get in some extra birding. There aren’t really any birds in Hokitika. Up until now, in May, I had seen only 35 species for the whole year! So any chance I can get!! Funnily enough, bird number 36 was at the Hokitika airport. It is just a very tiny airport of course because there’s only one plane and it only goes one place (Christchurch), and the plane itself is only about the size ... read more

Christchurch and Lake Tokapi There was small delay in the connection at Sydney. There were only a couple of flights to Christchurch. I was booked on a 1930 flight with a flight time of three hours. With the time difference of two hours I landed in Christchurch at 0030hrs. With the fog at the airport it was a touch and go affair, the first landing had to be aborted. But then it seem to have lifted slightly and we landed safely only a few minutes late. At that hour the only option to get to the hostel was by airport transfer service. The coach took you to the hotel door. Greg (owner) had left the front door open with instructions on the desk how to get into the room. The room was spacious and only next ... read more

Dluzno rict ze ty pozemni presuny nebyly uplne nejidealnejsi, protože Christchurch – Wellington znamenalo 5 hodin busem a 3 hodiny trajektem a Queenstown – Christchurch plnych 8 hodin v busu. Z nejakyho divnyho duvodu byly vzdycky na data co jsem potreboval letenky drahy, oproti tomu na bus z Queenstownu jsem chytil akci, takze za 30NZD jsem ... read more

I sleep fantastically in a proper and very comfy bed, until 2am when the first person gets up and goes out, and again at 4am and at 5am, and I am the fourth person at 6am….the poor two people left in the room! Walk to the city with my life on my back, nearly losing my jumper on the way but luckily realising I had dropped it fairly sharpish, and am at the bus stop at 6.55am. We are soon zooming off through the city as it wakes up and before long heading along the coast. As we approach Kaikoura there is a massive pod of around 200 dolphins jumping and playing in the water – such an amazing sight. We arrive at Kaikoura around 10am, and I discover it is a fair 30min trek to ... read more

Once again we arrived to our new location with rain. We arrived at Le Petite Inn around 10pm - Al was hungry and thought about ordering in a pizza, but the Inn keeper said there was nothing open at 10pm on a Sunday night -- as if he were crazy! It was interesting getting to the inn - we rented a car - it is not easy to drive on the opposite side of the road for the 1st time when it's dark and rainy. He did very well, but its a really good thing we had GPS to get us there! The next morning started out very interesting. We headed off to akaroa and were using the GPS directions as we started to climb the hills outside of Christchurch...only to find that the mountain pass ... read more

Today was the day... our holiday had come to an end and 3.5 months had flown by faster than we'd ever imagined! Our morning consisted mostly of packing and we kept up our regimented approach - plus we were now able to throw a few things away, freeing up some space for last minute souvenirs. We made our way over to the airport via the bus, although James had a slight fall out with the bus driver over the fare, delaying us a little! At 2pm we launched off the runway and bid farewell to New Zealand. At this point James was planning how he would be able to emigrate, he'd fallen in love with the country big time... We had a long way to travel and this included a stop in Sydney, Singapore, London then ... read more

The Fergburger sat heavy in my stomach all night and I was still full when I woke up! I'd woken up a couple of times in the night and had a good laugh when I saw the Irish boy in my room still fully dressed lying sideways on the bunk somehow fast asleep! I guess he had a good Paddy's day. The bus ride to Christchurch was a long one but as the weather was still being Mr Miserable it was better to be inside than out! We drove through the rolling hills of the Lindis Pass and had lunch at Lake Tekapo. We arrived into Christchurch later that afternoon; the city centre is still a disaster zone, but not having seen it before the earthquake means its ... read more

Well, our full day diving trip was cancelled due to a cyclone pushing through our location the night before our trip - this left the ocean extremely rough and no good for us to go out on. A bit disappointing, but they could guarantee all of us getting sick - no thanks! By the time we were done with breakfast, the rain stopped and the clouds did not look quite as heavy so we headed out for a hike up Cooks Look - to the highest point on the island. It was actually quite challenging - yep, even for those of us who live where there is less oxygen to breathe. It was quite humid ='s very sweaty, and some of the steep rock faces were still wet - making them a little slippery. We made ... read more
