Wednesday November 20th, 2013. Sydney, Australia to Christchurch, New Zealand. We arrived at Sydney at about 8 am and had to disembark the plane yet again. We cleared security agian and then waited at the same gate (a level higher) to reboard the same plane with the same seats as before. We landed at Christchurch on time and cleared immigration. We had to declare that we had hiking boots with us (bio hazards). The bags went through the x-ray machine and then we were shown to a special area where our hiking boots were very carefully inspected (good job we cleaned them before we left the UK!). In the arrivals hall we telephoned the camper van company who were expecting us. We took a taxi and, after completing all the documents and payment, collected our little ... read more

We then had the drive back on the winding roads with breathtaking views and through that little tunnel again. It was funny how it seemed shorter on the way back. It did help that we were following a line of cars and the lights helped so you could see where you were going. I wonder what happens when a car has a problem in there. We stopped at Mirror Lake and never did figure why it had that name. It was very clean and you could see the fish and the vegetative growth very clearly. Then it was time for our afternoon sprinkle and we arrived in Te Anau, found our hotel and found we could use the internet for free for 20 minutes. I really don’t understand why the WIFI is such a problem here. ... read more

My tried and proven method for sea travel still holds true!!! Although the Cook Straight was rough, blowing a gale and bitterly cold, I held myself together and didn't embarress myself by becoming sea sick. The secret.... fall asleep as soon as you can in a well ventilated area.... by the time you wake up, not only is the voyage half over but your body has had time to adjust itself to the motion. It also meant that I woke just as we came in sight of the South Island and the mountains of Marlborough Sound. Emerging from the mist, rain and clouds, the ferry slides gracefully between the headlands into bays surrounded by forests and the occasional commercial sea farms (maybe oysters, maybe something else). The waters calm but the temperature seems to have fallen ... read more

Hey guys, hope you're all well! Now that I'm back, I can finish up my blogs of my trip! The two weeks I had planned in New Zealand were almost exactly as that of Australia - arriving in the coldest part, staying for about 10 days with relatives, followed by a few days in a warmer part. Having left Sydney for New Zealand, I was met at the airport by my Aunty and her family, spending a week and a half taking a break from hectic sightseeing again - giving me time to catch up on sleep and washing, which was just as well, as the weather in Christchurch was very much as it was in Mount Gambier - being generally cold but mostly fine. After having a rest day on the first full day, on ... read more

Geo: -43.5316, 172.637September 29With 2 free days in Christchurch we decide to head to the International Antarctic Centre which touts an insight into the frozen continent of Antarctica and NZ 's involvement in the research missions. We donned a warm jacket and entered a simulated blizzard which dropped the temp to -14 degrees with a wind-speed of 34 km per hour, and if that didn't wake us up nothing would. We then visited the rescue penguins which was a little lame before viewing a 4D movie about an ice breaker. I'm sorry but this was also somewhat lame with the predictable squirts of water hitting you face and the chair rocking as the boat struck the ice on screen. We had some tickets for a ride on the impressive Haaglund tracked vehicle which took us over ... read more

Geo: -43.5316, 172.637Awake at 5am we tried to grab some extra Z's but we were still on Brisbane time so we got up and sorted our stuff ready for our road trip. Slipped a Telecom NZ SIM into Debi's phone so we we will have local call rates and plenty of data to last the next three weeks (no nasty roaming charges). After breakfast we headed to Europcar to pick up our vehicle. As expected they didn't have the car I booked in the lot so we were upgraded to a brand new Santa Fe diesel SUV at no extra cost, (scorage)! I pulled my Navman out of our luggage stuck it to the windscreen and we were underway.A short drive today (2 hours ) as we weave our way through the burbs of Christchurch and soon ... read more

We were now onto the last leg of our road trip around New Zealand. After our day at Mount Cook we spent the night back on the east cost in Timaru, before driving the rest of the way to Aakora in the Banks Peninsula. Once we'd left the main state highway, as with most of our journeys in New Zealand, it was a pleasure to drive: lush green hills, the smell of the sea in the air and barely another car on the road. We climbed the steep hills and coasted down the other side to Aakora - a cute seaside spot with a distinct French feel to it. The town had been founded by French settlers and retained a strong connection to its heritage; the tricolour flying from flag posts everywhere, roads named 'Rue...' and ... read more
