Day 16 – Tuesday the 29th of March Today was a real driving and relaxing day. A hark back to civilisation. We woke as late as possible and slowly tidied the camper up. Surprising just how much mess we were able to make in only 17 or so hours! We spent the morning eating brekkie and folding our washing done the night before. Eventually we decided on Nelson as our next port of call with a stop in at the few vineyards in the area. After winding our way back over the hills (the area being laden with apples, pears, kiwifruit and nashi) we eventually reached the relatively large town (comparative to most we have visited) of Richmond - located just outside of Nelson, and probably just considered a part of Nelson. We stopped in at ... read more

Saturday the 12th Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.' Homer Simpson I had bought tickets for Ron, Paula and me to attend the Marlborough Wine Festival. It is held in Blenheim in a valley that more than doubles the size of Napa in CA and is wall to wall with vineyards. The festival draws an international crowd and sells out every year. Unlike the Jazzfest I have attend in New Orleans, this was a much more gentile affair. Large numbers of women attending, of every age, were decked out in summer frocks. Instead of the foam beer can caddie I am used to we were given a plastic holder in a cord with a wine glass in it. So we strolled from booth to booth sampling ($2 or ... read more

Hello everyone! Work continued in the vineyards, though last week we had a little bit of a change where we were working on our boss’s brother’s farm because we had to wait for the plants to grow a bit more for the third wire lift. We went to his farm in Seddon and started off weeding wild oats from a wheat field, barley field and oats. They’re usually taller than the other crops so it’s not that hard to single them out, but it can be difficult to see them from a distance, especially in the oats. The reason we had to remove all the wild oats is because once the seeds get into the soil, they can remain there for years before growing again and they’re even bad for stock feed. I was given a ... read more

Day 104-107 18th-21st December With no showers or even toilets at this campsite we got back on the road soon after we woke up. The plan was to get to Wellington, find a decent campsite and get ready for our ferry the next day. The sun was coming out and when we got to Wellington it was a beautiful day. We couldn’t find a camping area in central Wellington so we found one not far from the ferry port. Everything had got quite damp from all the rain the previous day so we decided to take advantage of the warm sunshine and drag all the mattresses and sheets outside to air. Ellory had a nap while I cleaned out the van and got everything back in order. That done we did some stuff on the internet ... read more

Hello everyone and sorry I have been so remiss in updating but until now the internet was hard to come by here. I got the job at Talley’s worked for 3 and a half weeks before spinach ran out and got another job! I worked on the afternoon shift from 4PM to midnight and couple times a few hours later. Talley’s processes a lot of different kinds of food, our factory specifically does spinach. It comes in on dump trucks at about 5 tonnes at a time and is then dumped into a large hopper on hydraulic masts. The hopper is lifted up to the conveyor belt that leads into the factory where workers pick through the spinach coming in and remove all the bad leaves and weeds, it then travels through several water sprayers where ... read more

Hello everyone, I’ve made it from Lake Taupo to Plamerston North, then to Wellington and on to Blenheim (pronounced Blen-um). The drive down to Palmerston North was interesting, a little bit of plastic around the glass of the windshield came loose in the heavy winds and almost came off! I popped it all back into place and continued on until it happened again. With another hour to drive at least in weather that was at best just below gale force winds and a piece of plastic chrome that won’t hand on that long I had to come up with a solution. Most of you probably think I just duct taped the thing on like an amateur (I wish, but I didn’t have any duct tape) but I’m a professional, I rummaged through my pack for something ... read more

Before I forget and the internet dime runs out, one of the best wines tasted today, highly recommended for a Thai meal is 'Gewurztraminer'. And Spy Valley exports its wines to Nova Scotia. Despite the fact that Sauvignon Blanc is well known from this area, the Pinot Noirs are the up-and-coming wines. Light, interesting based on where they were grown, cheeky reds are quite nice. I enjoyed the Pinot Gris....very light, soft and surprising. No, I can't change my mind about Chardonnays...don't like them, although the un-oaked varieties were o.k. The tour was quite informative. There were three of us, two from Sweden. We ate a big lunch so that the wine wouldn't hit us too hard. Every place gave us Sauvignon Blanc as the first drink, then we had one wine from different years so ... read more

23 04 2010 Another fine warm sunny day greeted us and we got ourselves ready for the off. The internet connection was no good so sorry if we missed the myriad of skype calls. Today was a stroll up the east coast and without doubt the highlight was the seal colony we stopped next to. It was wonderful to see the seals lounging round and enjoying the sunshine. The pups were practicing their swimming in nursery pools and were teeming over each other like carp in an ornamental pool. The older ones were happy fro a bit of peace and quiet. The fishy smell was the only drawback but did not detract from the brilliant sights of seeing wild animals in their own habitat. We made a cup of tea and a spot of breakfast and ... read more

Erg mooi....Was trouwens weer super weer(20-26 graden). Route naar Nelson ... read more

We left Abel Tasman fairly early Wednesday morning (as we knew it would be a longish drive to Blenheim) and we weren’t too sure as to which route we wanted to take to get there. We had had a brilliant time in Abel Tasman (and we had the sand fly bites to prove it), and it looked like we were leaving at the right time, as we could see a big bank of clouds heading in our direction. So it was back on the twisty, yet scenic drive out of Abel Tasman National Park. It was a fairly plain drive until we hit the Marlborough region and then the scenery changed. It felt a bit like the Cape area with the vineyards stretching for miles and with mountains forming the background, it was beautiful. There is ... read more
