The previous weekend in Dunedin was spent feeling rather hungover, so I left Hastings bright and early on Friday morning for Auckland expecting to be on a ward in A&E, because I would be drinking with the Irish! However before all the shenanigans of match day began, I had the very difficult task of waking up early to contend with, as my coach to Auckland departed just after 7. In what was the longest journey so far (9 hours), we stopped in Taupo, which despite its tranquil lake and stunning hillside, looked like Blackpool minus the drunk Northerners. It was there we picked up Gav and Mike, an Irishman and a Welshman who were following their nations matches around New Zealand. Clearly they were going to struggle to be at the Welsh match in Hamilton the ... read more

As I write this I have settled back into farm life, my nemesis the bull has gone and i've been uploading my photos from the weekend...and an amazing one at that! However prior to the festivities beginning in Dunedin, I flew down to Christchurch to catch up with my cousin Joel, whom I hadn't seen since he last visited the UK several years ago. It was only a flying visit as I had an early bus to Dunedin the following morning, so hadn't the time to visit the centre of town and see the devastation left by February's earthquake. It was 8 o'clock the following morning when I boarded the bus to Dunedin, a time of day in which I have only just re-discovered after failing to adknowledge its existence during my three years at uni. ... read more

Over the past few days, I have been given a pretty thorough insight of life after university...man its hard work! Being a student seems like a long long time ago now because I have to actually work to earn my keep...scandalous lol! I will admit though, I have learned several new skills, such as putting up fences, walking alpacas without them trying to bid for freedom, and running from bulls...and yes that last one is true! However before all that, I went to collect mine and my Grandad's new car from Palmerston North (he flies out in December), roughly a 2 and a half hour drive from Hastings. When I initially asked how long it would take to drive to Palmerston North, the response was and I quote 'not long, about 3 hours'. Unfortunately there is ... read more

After well over a day sitting on aeroplanes and unfortunately not getting much sleep, I've finally arrived in New Zealand feeling rather dopey and indeed smelling quite rank! I was lucky enough to meet a fellow Rugby World Cup traveller and Welsh fan called Daryl at Heathrow check-in, and did what all good students do...head for the nearest pub! After a refreshing pint and a good sports related chin wag we boarded the flight to Auckland, which made a routine stop at Hong Kong (roughly half way) in order for the plane to re-fuel and to give us a chance to stretch our tired limbs. Daryl and I hung around with fellow passengers, New Zealanders Jeff and Heather, Jeff wearing possibly the winning rugby jersey in 8 weeks time, although lets hope England have something to ... read more

"If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?" --- Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk. Qantas (my courier over a couple of thousand miles) insist on starting their safety videos with an introduction from Billy Bob Thornton (or someone resembling him) wearing a pilot's uniform; and I thought, the last thing Billy Bob Thornton should be trusted with is a safety briefing to a plane full of people. And there was me, cramped into a centre aisle seat on a twenty-two hour flight from London to Sydney. On my right, Crocodile Dundee, complete with hat, obstructing the path to the aisle and with it the commode and well-rehearsed DVT exercises. On my left, a Frenchman who had been living in Glasgow for the past nine years, ... read more

This morning we made a bacon roll for breakfast - a two foot long baguette with a whole packet of bacon! V. naughty but v. filling too. Before leaving I had a chat with the receptionist about how full their chalets get, and she said : really, really full at times. She said that during the past Easter weekend, they could have filled the centre twice over. It is particularly popular with school groups from abroad, even from Aberystwyth in Wales! Apparently it is cheaper for them to come here rather than to go to Europe. Given that there were so many hotels, motels in town, to think that they at the periphery of the town were chock a block, is amazing. We set off at 10am towards Taupo, becoming more and more entranced by the ... read more

On Monday, we got up at 5.20am to drive to Picton in order to catch the 8am BlueBridge Ferry across to North Island. Emma was driving because Tim's feet were still not quite operational. We found a Bakehouse open very early and grabbed a coffee while waiting to drive onto the ferry. Once on board we headed straight for the galley cafe for a cooked breakfast (an essential part of any sea voyage). The 3-hour crossing was very plain sailing and we were delighted to count seven penguins swimming in the water as we sailed out of the Marlborough Sounds into the Cook Strait. We arrived in Wellington at lunch time (slightly later than expected) and hit the road for our 4-hour drive up to Hawkes Bay. We stopped for lunch in Masterton but the beautiful ... read more

Yo! For the past 5 weeks we have been earning a crust and honing our apple picking talents. We were advised to contact Phil and Kirsty who own an orchard on the outskirts of Hastings. Unfortunately, we missed the Royal Gala harvest but as they are so kind they sorted us out for work on a friend's organic orchard until the Jazz were ready to be picked. The organic place was well out of town and in a really peaceful area. We could park the van at the farm and use the amenities (see photo attached!) It took a few days to get into the daily grind but we soon settled into a comfortable 7 bins a day ( the size of a bin being the amount of apples you would expect to consume in a ... read more

The date is Wednesday, March 26th, and I am continuing my theme of writing on Wednesdays. I would first like to wish happy birthday to both my parents, this is that special day of the year when my dad is 2 years older than my mom. I'm writing this from the living room/kitchen/bedroom of my flat, as we talked our kiwi neighbors into letting us scype their internet service for two weeks for $15. Its pretty convenient to say the least. Unfortunately, only hours after my Congolese roommate and I made that deal, our contractor called and said that we were getting kicked out of here on friday night. Just like that girl, the Aladdin motel has drawn me back in and let me get comfortable only to throw me out onto the street in the ... read more

The title of this blog are my thoughts as I drove for the first time in NZ today. Everything is inverted, and I don't think it is so much the driving on the other side of the road that gets to you, its more the sitting on the other side of the car. That freaks you out. You are so used to puting your car space in a certain area so it doesn't hit anything, and now everything is inverted. It's wierd. But I'm here, safely. It was a long four blocks, however. And no questions about who's car I was driving. Some things are better left unknown. I'm writing this as I do a bunch of other stuff online in preparation of other things. That description is overly vague, and I kind of like it. ... read more
