Day 56 - Thursday 30th March The Facts: Flight to Bora Bora Shark and ray feeding Grey sharks diving The longer version: An early start took us back to Papeete Airport where we had an Air Tahiti flight to Bora Bora via one of the smaller islands. The views were spectacular with all islands having some beautiful green multi- coloured lagoons around them. Bora Bora itself was just as spectacular as it is in all the brochures, although some cloud covered the highest peak. Straight to the Hotel Maitai Polynesia, where after several reminders, we were picked up for our activity of Ray and Shark Feeding. This is generally pretty harmless except for when your guide wears outfits such as ours did as the photos demonstrate. We spent time in the water with the reef ... read more

Bonjour tout le monde! We're in the Archipel de la Société, where Polynesians ride bikes whilst clutching baguettes, eat croque monsieur, play pétanque and listen to accordian music (well, sometimes...). The laissez faire attitude comes naturally to Polynesians so it seems to be quite a good match. Indeed the Polynesians here voted to maintain their association with France in a referendum in 1958 (mind you, that was five years before the French started detonating nuclear bombs in the Archipel de Tuamotos). As far as the French are concerned Polynesie Française is another part of France itself and a fair number have decided to follow Gauguin and start a new life out here in the cyclone zone. One thing that immediately strikes you about French Polynesia is that there are flowers everywhere. Many of the locals wear ... read more

Right then, this one is for Caz who is grumbling that we haven’t put on enough entries, hope this one pleases you?! Last time we spoke we were just leaving Mo’orea which is an island in French Polynesia, the observant ones amongst you will remember that we were just about to set off on an inter-island adventure so here it is.. Our first stop was Bora Bora which is a picture postcard kinda place, very famous for its sandy ‘motu’ (ring of sand banks which surrounds the island) which in this case it has been turned into a string of 5* resorts for rich Europeans, Japanese and American tourists, you know the kind, the ones, over water bungalows with glass coffee tables etc. Actually on Bora Bora the motu also contains the airport so anyone arriving ... read more

After all that hard work travelling around South America we decided we needed a holiday and where better than French Polynesia. We had already booked our flights from Papette in Tahiti to Rangiroa and accomadation once we got there. Rangiroa is, as you would imagine an idylic tropical island except it's got coral beaches and not soft sand, however it is still beautiful. The second thing you notice in French Polynesia after the scenery is how expensive it is, we were told this is due to there being no income tax here and all government income is generated by their equivalent of VAT ranging from 20% on small items to 80% on larger more expensive stuff. Our accomodation was adequate relativley clean with lagoon side views, the food was some of the best we've had on ... read more

We arrived in Papette airport to the sound of strumming guitars and singing, flowers in the hair for all the visitors, what a good way to start! A bit of cash machine trouble but after going through all of our cards we managed alright… The French Polynesian coins – French Polynesian Francs - are massive, they look a bit like pieces of eight, real pirate country, the notes are pretty special too. We took the boat in the rain to Moorea and then this American school bus around the island to our camping. It is all so tropical! Campsite right next to the sea – see photo! -. At the campsite there is about 5 small tents and about 10 bungalows, everyone is v nice, either traveller types exchanging stories or people from papette staying for ... read more

What can I say about Tahiti..... Expensive! It cost me nearly 3 pounds for half a beer the robbing gits! Other than that it's a beautiful Island, I stayed in the capital Papeete but there is not much too do here. If your planning on visiting the the area you really only need a night here and then get yourself to the smaller islands. Ideally bring yourself a friend and plenty of cash also. Although there isn't much too do I'm not complaining as my sun burn from the Rarotonga was quite paingful and so I tried to stay away from the sun as much as possible. I 've started to peal and it reminds of the guy from the Austin Powers movie - It's not a pretty sight! French is the main langauge on the ... read more

Captain Dag has suggested that we all be awake at 6am to view our departure from Raiatea. Alan and I sit on our balcony with the usual coffee and breakfast as our ship glides slowly down the lagoon between Raiatea and Tahaa. We can see the Tahaa side and the early morning light provides wonderful photo opportunities. We pass so quietly that we can hear roosters crowing and dogs barking on the shore. At the end of our passage, we come to a motu off Tahaa with over-the-water bungalows standing in aquamarine colored water. The mountains of Bora Bora rise in the background. Now this is where I really want to come…isolated, surrounded by a coral reef, looks like heaven to me. We are late arriving in Bora Bora due to our sight seeing, but we ... read more

It’s another morning of coffee and breakfast on our balcony as we near Raiatea. This island is almost as large as Tahiti; but its quiet, rural demeanor is far removed from the hustle and bustle of Papeete. On the way into port, we pass more over-the-water bungalows perched on an island motu. Today we dock instead of tendering. The dock area is clean and fairly new with thatched covered huts housing local craftsmen. Raiatea and it’s twin island, Tahaa, share the same lagoon and there are too many choices of things to do. Our excursion is the Faaroa River and Island Exploration. We are two jeeps traveling together with only five people in our jeep and nine of us total. First, we take a drive around a portion of the island and into the interior. The ... read more

We sail from Papeete for Moorea this morning. The journey takes about two hours. When the Voyager sails into Cook’s Bay, I know we are in for a fantastic day. The ship anchors in the water, all around us is a view of dense, green vegetation rising to craggy mountain tops. And, the color of the water…it’s indescribable. Ah, now we’re truly in romantic Polynesia. Our tour today is the Lagoon Discovery with Snorkeling. We tender to shore where we find our snorkeling boat waiting for us. We motor out of Cook’s Bay and sail past Opunohu Bay, the background for Mutiny on the Bounty and South Pacific. Our boat motors farther along the lagoon until we stop at a spot to see the sting rays. We step down the ship’s ladder into the shallow water ... read more

It’s true what they say about Papeete, Tahiti; it is not the tropical paradise one imagines. This large city (by Polynesian standards) has about 20,000 inhabitants and plenty of city sounds and traffic. Sitting on the balcony, drinking our morning coffee as the ship pulls into port after another day at sea, we notice the car-jammed streets. But, it is an exotic place to us and we can’t wait to get out in the very hot and humid weather to explore. After walking down the gangplank and across the dock to a walkway that skirts the water, Alan and I are quickly soaked in sweat. We pass by another cruise ship and continue for a while along the pathway. Changing sides of the street, we walk back towards the ship looking in shops along the way. ... read more
