Well, I think we went to Namosi this weekend and I'm sure someone will eventually correct me if I have got it wrong. So, I was finally making it out into the "jungle" (everywhere is so goddam green around here!). We parked our cars at the end of the dirst road and headed down towards the river. We walked up the river, mainly actually walking in the water for about 30 minutes, which was great fun as at some points the water was up to thigh height. Of course, we still got quite hot and sweaty in the process, only to be duly rewarded at the end by the sight of a whole lot of falling water. Very pretty, but more importantly, very refreshing! After a quick dip and splash around, including the fun game ... read more

The last couple of weeks have been excellent! I've bought a brand new shiny bike (which didn't cost me an arm and a leg) and now I am happily cycling round Suva and hope to go on a ride to the hilly interior soon. Cycling along the waterfront is great. Very relaxing. Even when it is raining. Of course, as soon as I had the bike, I participated in my first Duathlon (the "super-sprint" version 500m swim and 10K cycle). It was great fun, not so much the part where I had to get up at 5.30am, but once the race had started and I was cycling along empty roads at full throttle in the early hours, I was happy. It was quite exhilarating. Next time I am going to do the run at the ... read more

Had a fantastic time on Monday when I did my first ocean swim, a 1km race in a national competition! It was a beautiful morning, very sunny and also a little windy. I was pretty excited by the whole prospect, even though I had done no training and never swum for 1km continuously in the sea but I figured, how hard can it be? Plus it was the shortest of the 3 races going on, the other two being 2.5 and 5 km. There was no way I could do those but 1km I thought would be possible. I got even more excited when I registered and got my number marked on my arms and legs - it was, like, a proper race and I haven't been in any kind of swimming competition since I ... read more

Back in Fiji and, I guess, back 'home'. And since this is going to be my base for a while, I am now going to make a determined effort to make it more like home. Starting with my apartment. I am feeling quite pleased with myself because I've finally managed to get a whole bunch of things for the flat, including a very important item: a desk. Well, it's a table but it's definitely being used as a desk. I've also got a fully equipment kitchen now and most of the things for the bedroom and bathroom. What's left? Well, definitely some shelves for books and other stuff which I am sure will slowly accumulate. Then maybe also an armchair or two or a sofa and a coffee table. I am deciding to stick with ... read more

Well, it's now been a week and a day. Am I settling in? Well, kinda. I've got a trip coming up this weekend and another one after that, so it's hard to think about getting furniture and stuff for my apartment when I know I'm not going to be here for the best part of the next month! I can't even go food shopping because I am afraid I will not eat everything I buy and it will go off in the fridge (lovely) by the time I get back. And there's so much to prepare of these trips that there's not much time to think about matching sofas and what kind of shelves I would like...oh well. At least there's one thing I love about my apartment that came with it and didn't cost a ... read more

Wow! What a first week. Straight off the plane in Suva and into a four hour meeting where I was taking the minutes. Things continued much in that vein for the rest of the week. The work out here has been intense. The project is very interesting and exciting but I've hardly had time to do anything apart from work, eat and sleep. It is definitely not just fun and games. But I guess I knew it was going to be a challenge. I have managed to find time for a run, a cycle and a couple of swims, plus a game of ultimate frisby in Albert Park (after Victoria's husband of course) so at least I have done a little exercise to keep the energy flowing. You know me, can't live without sport. I've also ... read more

After last night's late night due to nonsensical washer-dryer situations I was in no mood to get up and go today, and yet when it came to it I was still the first person up and into the restaurant for breakfast. Luckily it looked like it was going to be a nice day again today, we seemed to have completely lucked out with the rainforest trek and the timing of the little bit of rain we got and today there was very little, if any, strenuous activity so we all were after a few rays. Our first stop took us to a supermarket to buy lunch and some stationery items we had to take to the school we'd be visiting later in the day as a gift for the kids. It costs something like FJ$30 a ... read more

We awoke to find the heavens has opened. Though I'm here in Fiji's Summer it's also their wet season as that's the time it's most humid. Gareth had snuck in at some point during the night having finished his kava sesssion and was in no mood to catch any breakfast. The rest of us slowly got up, it was about seven in the morning, and got showered and dressed and made our way for breakfast cursing the weather and bemoaning the fact we had a three hour trek through the rainforest today in it. We made our way down to the river, stopping to buy lunch and stock up on water, and got out of the bus to transfer to and old army truck. We'd eventually make our way back to bus via a big loop ... read more

We've just spent 8 days on a desert Island ! Our Desert island was "Bounty Island" apparently it's also known as Celebrity Love Island - but we didn't know that when we booked it. It's really strange at one end of the island they've got this abadoned resort/film set that was used for the programme, and it's not used at all anymore, oh, except that they've nicked the pool and moved it so that we can all use it ;-) We had our own beachside bure, which was very nice; and all the food is imported and cooked by them, really all we had to do was lie in hammocks and appear at the right time for meals ;-) We may have left the island heavier than we arrived.... The reef was just offshore and we ... read more

We did a MAJOR hike today. We left Mango Bay and headed further round the coast a bit before going inland. There we transferred to a truck that drove us half way up a hill before we all got out to start walking. When we left the bus it was very warm and sunny but unfortunately that did not last and when we were in the back of the truck it started to rain. This was proper rain not a light drizzle. By the time we had to start walking it was pouring – it was like being in a shower and I am not joking! At least it was warm. After about an hour or so going up this mountain we actually entered the forest. It was so cool. It was proper jungle trekking although ... read more
