13th – 26th March 2011 After making a mess of the 13th March in New Zealand, the fickle finger of fate pointed us over the International Date Line and gave us another stab at it, hopefully to do a better job this time!! We grasped the opportunity and declined the free alcohol on the flight.... well Ellie did, Steve broke after only an hour and ordered himself a cheeky chardonnay! Luckily it was only a short flight so before we knew it we were being greeted by the heat and a ukulele player at Rarotonga airport. We later found out that this chap was Jake Numanga MBE and he has been there to greet and bid farewell every flight for the past 25 years. We soon found our rental car with their instructions of ‘parked by ... read more

Well, it is certainly true that life can change in the blink of an eye, and in this case the last three weeks have been a total rollercoaster ride for me. Too many goodbyes but just as many good times. I moved back into the Intern house on Feb 27th and have been here with Amanda and Sara. I really enjoyed staying up at Steve’s while he was gone for the quiet time and to be able to have a real house all to myself, but I missed the girls, so it’s great to be back. Monday the 28th I had one of the worst moments on the island when by way of freak accident my signature pink sunglasses fell into the murky water between the boat an the dock and even though Tom and myself ... read more

Halfway to Where? Well, yet again I have failed to write for a few weeks. They have been two pretty great weeks as well. I am exactly halfway through my time here on Raro and I feel as though I have been here forever yet am leaving in no time all at once. Reality keeps getting stronger as I continue my search for a job post-Divemaster but I am staying positive and am certain I will land on my feet. Well, that’s what everyone keeps telling me I will do anyway. I am currently broadening my search basis using all of my skills as possible avenues. I am searching for hospitality jobs, dive jobs and even horse related jobs. The last of that list is actually proving to be the most successful so far, but I ... read more

The Pink View I might be wrong, but I suspect that the Pink and Blue views are going to wildly vary this time. We'll see. The island of Rarotonga is, without a doubt, stunningly beautiful. Sitting in a perfectly azure lagoon, surrounded by a coral reef, this is the type of island that dreams are made of and it is one that I feel very privileged to have visited. The people are friendly and unobtrusive. The pace of life is slow and 'Island Time' is pretty much whatever you want it to be. Palm trees rule the roost, tuna is as cheap as chips and the paw paws (papaya to us Brits) seem to grow from nearly every tree (25p for one three times the size that ever make it to the UK). It is ... read more

25th February 2011 Our penultimate morning in the Cook Islands started overcast, and was threatening rain, not a promising start. We had decided that we would attempt to go to the cultural market, that we knew takes place on a Saturday morning, a day early as we thought being a market it may be on everyday. So getting on the bike off we headed at the early hour of 8am. We arrived in town not much later to an almost deserted market place, with only a few stalls being set up. Maybe we were too early, everybody works on “island time” after all. So we headed further into town to grab something for breakfast and to give the place a chance to liven up whilst we did. We even asked in the supermarket whilst buying ... read more

23 February 2011 It is not the monsoon season in Rarotonga but someone forgot to tell the weather that so, we awoke this morning to a torrential downpour which showed no sign of letting up. So much for topping up the tan before we return home. Gregg, optimistically decided that there might be decent surf, it not generally being put out by the rain, so hopped on the bike with board in tow. Less than twenty minutes later, he returned in drowned rat mode. No surfing today then. When it rains in Rarotonga, there is quite literally nothing to do so, out came the books and the card games and we whiled away all morning and the early afternoon that way. I was on a mission to finish a book, so it was no hardship ... read more

21st February 2011 Our second morning waking up in our new abode, was also the point at which we had decided enough was enough and the extreme heat of our room was just too much to allow us to sleep properly. The lack of aircon in this place is rather annoying and as a result I woke many times in the night covered in sweat - its like having a fever but not being ill. So this morning our first task was to go to the airport to visit the Air New Zealand office and see what we could do about changing our flights. We had already decided that we couldn’t afford to come home as late has we had planned, but the flight we wanted to leave on was within the ten day period ... read more

19 February 2011 Happy Birthday Mum. That is how the morning started. I hopped out of bed and along the lane to use the phone to call Mum to wish her a happy birthday. That is the first time that we have used an actual phone during our trip since we have been able to use Skype everywhere else (and our mobiles with a local sim in Aus). Here in the Cook Islands, wifi is bought in megabyte packages rather than units of time, never seems to be free, and is pretty expensive when you consider how quickly anything other than zipping through e-mails and checking Facebook (or your favourite blog ;-) ) uses up those megs. As the call came to an end the rain came down so I sheltered for short while before ... read more

17th February 2011 We awoke to the noise of the bloody cockerel again this morning - we may have been converted to early rising but this was taking the biscuit. So we went to the toilet and went back to bed until a sensible hour. When we awoke again it was approaching 9am which is very late for us but the lack of aircon means that we don't sleep very well, and as such awake feeling like its bedtime. Only our own sheer force of will gets us out of bed at all. I had some leftovers and we then tried to make a plan for the day. We had both decided that we wanted to get out of this hostel as it is the pits, but with super expensive and unreliable wifi, we would ... read more

16 February 2011 Our time in New Zealand had come to and end, we were Paualess and had once again set our alarm to an hour suitable to ensure that we would not have a rush on to get to the aiport. Unusually, we both slept for the night. It is quite usual when we know that we have to be at an airport in the morning that one or both of us can neither get to sleep or stay asleep. I say this with one slight qulalification. I did sleep but, courtesy of Inception I had rather lurid dreams which involved one of Gregg's colleagues storming out of her job among other things. For the sake of his sanity upon returning to work, I seriously hope that there was no premonitionary quality to that ... read more
