Welcome to our blog. We hope you will stop by every now and again to see how we are getting on. We will update you with photos and videos which will hopefully make this an interesting page. Whilst we have no definite route planned, we have a good idea of where we will be going and in what order and it looks something like this:-
Thailand - Laos - Cambodia - Vietnam - Malaysia - Thailand (again) - Malaysia (again) - Singapore - Hong Kong - Macau - China - Australia - New Zealand - Cook Islands - USA - Canada - USA (again) - London
We are not planning to use our mobiles too much so will keep in touch with people by email and via this blog.
All the best,
S+E
xx
16th April – 7th May 2011 Upon meeting up with Scabs and Woody, it didn’t take long for our first problem to become apparent – each of our backpacks are the size of a small African elephant and the car was made for normal sized luggage!! Nevertheless, after a game of luggage tetris we crammed it all in with no visibility out of the back window. Worryingly, as the trip went on, either the boot got bigger or we lost some stuff on the way as every day the gap of light through the back window got gradually bigger. Our first stop on the trans-American journey was Calico Ghost Town near Barstow in California. This was essentially a mock wild wild west town in the middle of the desert and we were lucky enough to get

We objected to the corporate branding however so we named it ‘Daisy’ for our tenure with the van. It wasn’t long before we were on the road out of LA and heading north. We had 19 days until the van was due back in LA and we had the route planned. We would head up the West coast all the way to Vancouver then come back down in-land stopping off at some national parks on the way. The first major city on the way

We grasped the opportunity and declined the free alcohol on the flight.... well Ellie did, Steve broke after only an hour and ordered himself a cheeky chardonnay! Luckily it was only a short flight so before we knew it we were being greeted by the heat and a ukulele player at Rarotonga airport. We later found out that this chap was Jake Numanga MBE and he has been there to greet and bid farewell every flight for the past 25 years. We soon found our rental car with their instructions of ‘parked by

We had decided that we wouldn’t spend too long in the capital as we had plans for the rest of the North Island, so an overnight stop and a drive by of the main attractions it was! That evening, after a wander down by the harbour, a couple of drinks and a food court dinner we hit the sack. The alarm went off early the next morning so we could get a cheeky run in before checkout and we then headed north towards Napier. Napier was flattened by an earthquake in the 1930’s and rebuilt in an Art-Deco style which remains to this day. It is most famously known for being the heart of

The in-flight entertainment is unrivalled and the generosity with the wine is faultless. It is actually done electronically, you simply click your order on the screen and within a minute or two it’s there. Steve’s screen started to play up towards the end but we suspect it was disabled by the cabin crew who noticed the stock of Chardonnay dwindling rapidly. The only problem was that the song playing on the entertainment system at the time was caught in a loop and there is only so many times you can listen to Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones before wanting to jump off the wing. Ellie discovered the best soft drink ever – it’s called L&P

Fortunately, Helen and David were staying at the Peninsula Boutique Hotel which had a lovely big pool area and overlooked the beach so much of our time was spent there. Port Douglas is both very hot and very relaxing so the main thing to do is to bask in the tropical pacific ocean and cool off in the pool so many of our days were spent doing just that!! There were however, two action packed days, the first of which was a day of snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef. We ventured out on a boat, with a

It seems like an age ago that we last blogged and Asia is a dim and distant memory. Now we can update you on what has been going on in Australia over the last 3 months. We arrived in Sydney to be greeted at the airport by Ellie’s sister, Bexs who had arrived with Rich from Singapore a few days earlier. We were initially surprised by how chilly it was in the land where the sun always shines, or so we had been led to believe by Neighbours and Home and Away. In reality, Sydney had just had its coldest winter in years and a wet summer was expected after 10 years of drought – great timing!

We got the airport shuttle bus to Mongkok and then spent the next 45 minutes looking for the hostel. After trundling down one road after another Steve went to a nearby Maccy D’s to look on the internet at where we needed to go leaving Ellie standing at the side of the road looking after the bags. As it turned out Ellie was in fact standing right outside the hostel building but as it was one of many ‘mansion’ buildings, there is one doorway off a backstreet and absolutely no signage. The

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur mid afternoon and got the shuttle bus to the city as the airport is about 70km away. After trundling through a bustling Chinatown knocking people out with our big bags, finally settled on a hostel we thought we would be comfortable in. Within 30 minutes of settling in, we realised it would be a long night - the absence of a window and dreary grey walls should have been the first clues but went unnoticed at the time of check-in. We made an early start the next day to find a new guest house and truly start our KL adventure. The

Our visas were valid from the 5th August and it was only the 4th. We might not be allowed in the country and we might be left behind somewhere on the border! It was about 3 hours to the border, 3 hours of torment - how could we be so silly? We had applied for the visas as soon as we arrived in Phnom Penh, before we decided to head for Vietnam a day earlier. To make matters worse, the border control area was chaotic. About 150 people we crammed in a lobby for about an hour and then names were called one at a time for people to pass through. We were
