Today we woke up, as all mornings, to Kim’s wonderful chant of ‘Wakey wakey!!’ We had a quick start since we would be camping in the same place the following night. So we packed our day bags and ate some breakfast, then were on our way to Monkey Mia in Shark Bay.
As soon as we arrived at Monkey Mia we were able to witness its number 1 tourist attraction - the dolphins. A while ago a lady used to stand by these shores and feed a dolphin that came in every day. That dolphin went on to have babies who she taught to come to shore for a feeding. So, through purely natural instinct, a whole group of wild dolphins come to shore for a feeding several times a day. Only a limited number of people get to actually feed the dolphins, but everyone gets to stand by the shore and watch the magnificent creatures come right up close. It was like Marineland - but REAL!!
After the dolphins left we set up our stuff by the beach. We had free time until the afternoon, when we were all going on a little boat cruise. Some people
played beach volleyball, some people perused the store, some people went swimming…It was a great, relaxing morning and a nice change from all that time spent cooped up in the buck! We had our lunch in a little gazebo by the water.
After lunch we headed to the Aristocrat 2 for our boat cruise. Basically this boat cruise was like PARADISE. The calm, clear, blue seas, the attractive crew members…We made a little stop at a Pearling site to learn about how pearls are made and why they’re so expensive. After that stop we hoisted the sails and went cruising around Shark Bay. The Captain offered us rides in the ‘Boom Net’ which is a net at the back of the boat. You sit in it and the water rushes around you. It’s incredibly massaging, although a real danger for all of us females in bikinis. Luckily the water covers you, so mishaps (like, say, losing your bikini top) went virtually unnoticed. We also saw some water life, including dolphins (been there, done that), and some large sea animals that started with the letter ‘m’…I can’t seem to remember their name (doesn’t roll off the tongue like STROMATALITE). Me
and one other girl ONLY saw a giant sea turtle before it swam into the depths of the sea.
After our great day at Monkey Mia we took the scenic route home and saw two magnificent ocean-front spots, including Shell Beach, which is a beach that has little shells instead of sand.
When we returned to our campgrounds at Hamelin Pool we were no longer the only Murdoch students. Some of the students on a different trip which was running in the reverse direction were also there. They were a rowdy bunch, and when we packed up and headed out the next morning we looked at the mess they’d left behind and felt bad for their trip guides.
