Yesterday was another great day spent with friends down in the city! Craig, Tom and I hopped on the train in the early afternoon and headed down to Flinders Street. We got off there and began walking toward the Southgate market and were going to look for Hector and Theresa. Well, we call Hector and find out that we are at the totally wrong market (we thought we were at the Queen Victoria Market, but we were not). So, we walk back up the stairs to Flinders Street and hop on the tram to go down a few more blocks. We got off the tram, walked down to Elizabeth street and then we saw the market. It was crazy- it is like the world's largest flea market...they had everything you could think of...seriously. They have really cheap souveniers there which is cool, but I figure it's a little early in the game to already be getting them when it's only my 3rd week here...I know I will be back at the market again to get some gifts for people! But, I did end up getting something for myself! I got a really cool wallet...it's "fake" brown kangaroo leather and it has
Queen Victoria Market
Grandma Shotzberger...you would have been in heaven! an image of Australia on the front of it with a kangaroo in it. It's pretty cool and I think will be a nice keepsake/reminder of my time here. Other than that, we just walked around and looked at all the booths. Well, who am I kidding...we only saw like a fourth of the market and we were there for at least a few hours...we ran into Diego, Cindy, Valerie, Thede and more people so we kept stopping to talk plus we would stop to look at random booths, etc...so we really didn't see much of the market.
From there, we walked down to Melbourne Central and got an early dinner (we were all starving, though). Craig and I got some chicken from Nando's which is like Chick-fil-a but a bit spicier...yes mom, I said spicy. It was really good though and I see myself going back there again! Then, we went down and got some gelato from a little shop on the street....mmm was that good...yes it was! We were walking down Swanston street trying to decide what we were going to do to waste time before the movie and we decided we'd like to go bowling. So,
we walked into a place called Strike (a lot like Lucky Strike in Louisville) and they have a Sunday special where you buy a $5 drink from the bar and you can bowl a game for free...So, you pay $5 and you get a drink, a free game of bowling, and a free shoe rental- not a bad deal if you ask me! So, we stayed there and we all bowled a game, I came in last place, but that's really not surprising considering I'm terrible at bowling...I did get a spare on my last frame though, so that was pretty exciting.
So, we left bowling and made a quick walk down to the theatre to watch the movie. The international film festival has been in town for the last 2 or 3 weeks and last night was the last night of the festival, so we decided we wanted to go see a movie called Eagle vs. Shark. It's like the New Zealand version of Napoleon Dynamite...I really enjoyed it. We did not buy tickets before hand because we didn't realize we needed to.....but we should have. So, it was "sold out" when we got there so we had
to wait in the "standby" area to see if there were going to be enough seats. Well, there ended up being plenty of seats, so we paid for our tickets and got to go in to watch it! It was pretty good. From there, Gunnar, John and Tomiko headed back to campus and the rest of us headed down toward Flinders again to ride the big ferris wheel that is down on the river by City Centre. It was really cool to ride it and get a full view of the city at nighttime. It was a bit chilly up there as it was a pretty cold/windy night, but it was definitely worth it to see the view. After the ferris wheel, instead of riding the train back, Jorai just gave us a ride in his car which was pretty cool...still completely throws me off, but that's okay.
Then I got back here and talked to my roommates for a while and then I called Kristina and got to talk to her for about an hour on the phone (she was in town going to church)...so, I ended up finally going to bed around 3 am. Now, here I
am, at noon still in my pajamas and slowly beginning my day. Today will be full of homework since I didn't do ANY all weekend and I have a lot to get done for my classes today. Plus, today is like the yearly cleaning day for my building, so these cleaning crews are going to come through and clean our apartments, I'm assuming they're going to like shampoo the carpets or something, but we shall see. Well, I guess I better hop in the shower before they get here and then get started on my day before it's already gone again! I apologize if nothing exciting happens for the next few days- that thing called school seems to get in the way!
Love,
Katie
