Aussie Rules
Attempt at an action shot On Wednesday I caught my flight out of Perth for Adelaide. The actual flight to Adelaide doesn't usually take that long, but I'd booked a ticket with a stop over in Melbourne. This added an extra 4 hours to the time it could have taken so I rocked up in Adelaide at about 9pm. Managed to find a shuttle bus, I was the only one on it and I got a guided tour from the driver who was pretty cool.
Met up with Rob and spent the next couple of days checking out the city, overall there wasn't a lot to do but it's a nice city. On Thursday I found out that I got the scholarship I was after in Newcastle, was pretty chuffed about that as it means I won't have to worry abuot money next year (thanks again for transcribing those letters mum). I did another museum and we had a night out on Thursday. On Friday Rob got a bus down to Melbourne in the morning, but I was booked on the night bus at 8pm. After checking out of the hostel I'd anticipated having to spend 10 hours wandering around the city, but I
Adelaide Winery
View at the first winery we went to gave my Grandpa's cousin Bonnie a call (who lives up in the Adelaide hills) and we met up for lunch. Not long after we'd sat down Bonnie's daughter Jane and her family turned up too. After eating the biggest stir-fry I've ever had (had half and couldn't eat for the rest of the day), they all kindly offered to drive me around the Adelaide hills to have a look around.
First we went up to a school where there was an aussie-rules game on. Apparently it was a good game to watch as they were the top of the amateur leagues, so the standard of play was good but there was also some fighting which you don't see as much in the big games. After stopping off at a point that looks out over the city, we went to a couple of places for some wine-tasting. As my previous experience of wine was limited to the under £4 category, I was impressed by what I tried. Drove around the hills for the rest of the afternoon and then Jane and her husband Richard drove me down to the bus station in the city, really kind of them since it
was out of their way. Went for a quick drink before the bus and they told me about some cool places to check out on my way round the coast, going to try and see some places past Syndey like Byron Bay to try out a bit of surfing.
Bus journey was a bit of a nightmare, set off at 8pm thinking I'd be able to sleep for most of it. Big mistake. First off we were all pretty much forced to watch this terrible film with Bette Midler in it and then this guy started snoring. It was like someone doing an exaggerated impression of snoring but loads louder. Finally arrived in Melbourne at 5am after zero hours sleep and after a quick wander soon realised that I was going to have to wait till 7 to get in to a hostel. Went back to the bus station and took up a seat with all the other hobos. Got a bed in the first hostel I went in and went straight to bed and passed out. Woke up at 3 in the afternoon and made an attempt to find Rob to no avail.
Yesterday I met up
with Rob, sounds like the hostel he found wasn't that great, he's sharing a bunk with a tramp. He said he woke up to the sound of his bunkmate eating cheetos at 3 in the morning the other night. Spent the day wandering about the city and checked out the Neighbours night. It turned out there was a big night on that night where you could meet some of the cast, so we got booked that and went for a few drinks beforehand. When we left the bar, the tram we were after was stopped just across the road. I ran and hopped on but when it started moving I turned round and couldn't see Rob! I hopped off at the pub called the Elephant & Wheelbarrow in St. Kilda where the night is and sat in the bar waiting for Rob. When he didn't turn up I started to think he'd been hit by a tram or something, but I'd paid my $40 so I headed in to the bit where Libby was singing and playing guitar, she was pretty good. Not long after Rob turned up (apparently the tram doors had shut too fast) and the crowd went
crazy as the cast came out. By this point my beer tally was ahead of Rob's (due to me hanging about for aaages waiting for him). The stars of the night: Karl, Janelle, Connor and Madge went round the room for everyone to get their photos taken. I'll put some of the photos up but not the one of me and Madge (for some reason i embarassingly look like it's the best moment of my life). The night ended with Karl Kennedy's band taking to the stage, they did covers of songs like I Predict A Riot, it was hilarous. Got a cab back to the hostel and bumped in to Rob walking about this morning.
Think we're going to head down and check out the beach and St. Kilda tomorrow, not planning on hanging around here too long as I'd like to head up towards Brisbane for a bit after Sydney before shooting off New Zealand. Afraid Rob's cameras broken again so I can't upload the photos, I'll try and put them up later.
