Mission Beach, not a lot to tell.

We bought ourselves a Greyhound pass that takes us from Cairns to Sydney as we start the East Coast Run back to Sydney for our flights to NZ. Our first stop was Mission Beach, partly because we thought I'd be a nice place to chill for a while, and partly because we'd rather avoid any long and uncomfortable bus journeys if there's chance.

And so what to say about Mission Beach..... well not a lot. It definately a place to chill and spend some time not really doing anything. There's plenty of beach and not much else. It's a popular place to Skydive and although we thought about it, the weather kind of stopped any chance of that. Yes, you'll be glad to know that we didn't really see much sun, but had plenty of cloud and wind and a bit of rain too. Nice. So there goes our plan of lazing around in the sun on the beach for a few days. Having said that we did end up staying for 5 nights.

The first place, "The Sanctuary", was right out in the forest again and we had a nice little hut amongst the trees, and the best thing about it - the were no walls! Thankfully, a mesh to stop us getting bitten to death, but it really cool sleeping with all the sounds of the rainforest. There was also a great beach nearby, only trouble was it took a 15 minute hike through the jungle to get to it so we only went once - and luckily the only day we had good weather. However, the BEST thing about the place.... is that we finally got to see a CASSOWARY!!! Apparently the most dangerous bird in the world and with only 1000 left in Oz, we've been waiting a while to see one. It was awesome, huge, and a bit scary!

Then we decided to move down the road, as we really were stuck in the middle of the rainforest with no access to anything really, and although the place was great and food very nice, we were spending a bit given we had no choice but to eat in their restaurant. Another reason for the move was that the previous place had no TV and I had with the Champions League final I had to be able to watch. Well, shouldn't have bloody bothered! Anyway, next stop, Beach Shack. More central, a minute walk onto the beach and a few minutes to the shops. It was ok. The weather deteriorated and so we were stuck inside most of the time but luckily with a TV and DVD player in the room. And so we spent 3 nights there, but only because we'd pre-paid. We'd have gone sooner. Oh and it turns out while we were there, Caroline had her first encounter with bed bugs! - I was on the top bunk 😊

Next stop - Magnetic Island.
