This morning we all woke up at 05:00 and got dressed to go to swim training. I took my books and a brunch bar and watched the swim session from 05:30 - 06:15. We got back to the unit at about 06:30 and got ready to go out for the day. Sophie had to work all day, but luckily Dad had a day off work so we decided that a day of fishing was what we needed.
We dropped Sophie off at work at 08:00 and set off down the M1 towards Maroochydore. We stopped at McD's on the way and had breakfast and coffee there. We then drove to the bait shop in Ningi, although we had to go a long way round as the exit we wanted was blocked off by roadworks. We bought some hooks, two bags of mackerel and two live worms and then I drove the rest of the way to the marina.
We went to the boat hire place and got a four person boat for half a day. We left the marina at 10:00 and first we decided to stop on the sea-side of the bridge. We anchored the boat and started
fishing. Within about thirty seconds of casting one rod off, I had a bite and managed to catch it. It was a good sized sand whiting. We took a photo of it and then threw it back in. We carried on fishing there for about half an hour and managed to catch two other sand whitings. We ended up drifting out towards the sea a bit too far when the tide turned and began falling. We moved to the other side of the bridge, but couldn't get the anchor to hold so we had to head away from that area.
We went up to the other end of the estuary near a shipwreck. We dropped anchor on the northern side of the wreck and had a snack. We then began to fish again. We caught three more sand whitings and also a tailor. The tailor was a bit smaller than the one that we caught last week off the beach.
We then let the boat drift for a couple of minutes to deeper waters. We dropped anchor again and changed the hooks and started using mackerel as bait rather than the live worms. I didn't catch anything, but
Dad was a lot more successful. He caught a really nice flathead which we took some photos of and then we released it again. Then after a lot more fishing, we had used all the bait apart from one mackerel and so we decided to just give it a go. Dad got a big bite and managed to land a lovely flounder which we were seriously considering about taking home for dinner. Unfortunately we couldn't identify it 100% so couldn't check the guidelines for the catch weight and length etc. Luckily for the fish it was released after just having to pose for a few photos!
We went back to the marina and got back to the boat rental office at 15:00. I pulled the boat up against a pontoon and Dad tried to get out and get onto the pontoon. Unfortunately for him, the boat and pontoon had other ideas, so they floated apart. Dad ended up, fully clothed, in the marina! It was the funniest thing that I have seen for a long time and I laughed my head off (after checking that he was alright of course)! He was absolutely soaked and freezing! He wore my
hoodie on the way home and I drove all the way.
We are now just about to have dinner, which will be jacket potatoes, baked beans and cheese and then we will have some raspberry cheesecake for pudding! :-D
