Fraser Island

Tuesday, September 30
Day 11- Walked on the beach in Hervey Bay. Found real cuddle bones on the beach. (I used to buy them for my cockatiels). Then had a great swim in the pool at Koalas. Again, another hot and sunny day. We had an evening meeting to brief us for Fraser Island. We met our groups that we would be riding with and shopped for groceries that we would use the next three days on the island.

Wednesday, October 1
Day 12- FRASER ISLAND! Get ready for some 4x4! We took a ferry from Hervey Bay to Fraser Island at 10:30AM that took just under an hour. The sandy tracks on Fraser island were very rough, bumpy, and EXCITING. Noone knew what to expect or what was ahead so we enjoyed getting bumbed around in the back of the vehicle and going over deep rut holes. Our first stop was Central station where we were suppose to find an aboriginal fruit tree but everyone we asked said it did not exsist, at least not at that spot. Spotted a Goanna! Nearly 10km took us 1 hour to drive. Everyone got out at Lake Birrabeen for a swim. So nice. Our second lake stop was at Lake Boomanji where the water was dyed because of tea tree leaves. Once we made it to the beach on the east side of the island (arrived on the west) we set up camp and cooked dinner. Saw our first Dingo on the beach.

Day 13- Didn't sleep much that night. The ground was hard, even though it was sand, and the tent was uncomfortably small with three of us in it. I was up at 5 and watched the sunrise then cooked breakfast sandwiches(BLTs) for everyone. I turned out to be the cook for the group. *got me out of setting up tents and cleaning up then. We saw the tide rise and grew impatient waiting for it to go back down so we could drive on the beach. Once it was low, we headed North to Indian Head. Along the way we stopped to watch some whales that were playing in the ocean. On our way back south we stopped at the Maheno shipwreck to take photos and then took a swim down Eli Creek. Then it was back to the same place, Cornwells, to camp for a second night. This was a popular sport for self-drive tours. I would say close to 100 other young folks in the area.

Day 14- We all had an early rise this morn at 5AM. We packed all our camping gear and set out on a hike to Lake Wabby. Wabby is the deepest lake on the island but is said that it will be inexsistant in 3 years time because it keeps filling with sand. Four of us were impatient for the 2.5 km walk that we ran a good half of the way. Nothing like a good workout at 6 in the morning. I've never hiked in bare feet before but it was cool because the trail was all sand. After Lake Wabby was Lake McKenzie, regarded as the most beautiful freshwater lake, and it was. It was turquoise and clear just like the ocean, but all freshwater and power white sand. The sand on Fraser island is so fine and soft it felt like I was walking on mashed potatoes. It's pure silica sand too so it squeeked as you walked. We then hit the deadly tracks back to the west side of

the island to catch the 2:30PM ferry back to Hervey bay. When we got back we all came to a concensus that after 3 days we had enough sand for a while. It was everywhere! And the fact that it is so fine means it clings to your skin and is hard to get off stuff.
