WOW! Can't believe we are actually here. How is this rock? Along the drive today we were blown away by the majesty of Mt Conner which you encounter before you get to Uluru. Then Uluru came into view. A long drive here today from Coober Pedy this morning. The opal mines were incredible and stretched for miles and miles, the landscape like something out of Star Wars. The environment changed as we journeyed from South Australia into NT. It was rocky and sparse at first, the trees set out like suburbs, each tree having its own plot. But then the dirt became redder and sandier, the trees greyer or even black. Sometimes there were clusters of trees, all looking as if they needed a good water and a feed. And it was pretty flat, only the monoliths and road trains standing out. I got to drive today. I was nervous but it was ok. Even overtook a road train at 130kms with eagles circling!
The kids have been awesome. They have taken the long travelling in their stride, with the help of today's technology the trip has been a breeze. There's been plenty of excitement at the changes in scenery, at the lodgings and at the food. (Message to Nana: Jack says you are the best honey joy maker ever! and the other kids agree). As for the adults....I think we are all dumbstruck that we have made it this far, a life long dream realised.
My turn, Bron that is. Cooper Pedy was like mad max meets star wars. interesting people, interesting landscapes, quite eerie really. The eagles snacking on those poor sleeping animals were a sight to be seen. At one stage there were 3 just sitting on the side of the road, em says they were in a meeting! It certainly looked like they were. When they were in flight, circling their prey them seemed effortless, just floating, almost gentle but we know they were just waiting for the right moment to attack. The temp gradually rose today, starting off a comfy 15 and finishing up 28 at uluru. This time last year we were sitting at Pt Leo in Long Johns and a rip roaring fire, this year we are enjoying the warmth in our thongs and t-shirts. Yippee!!!!We all managed to put up the tents with no tantrums but an occasional stern word. I reckon by Darwin we will all be speedy experts. Sitting now planning another exciting day in the Red Centre. We are all well and having an amazing adventure. I keep needing to pinch myself to make sure it is all real. Speak soon, Bron x
