Spent the night in Thousand Lakes campground, so far the most beautiful one we've been in. Highly recommend this one. We could stay only one night. Too bad because there is so much to see there. (Grand Staircase Escalante Park) Oh well, Next time.
We traveled on RT 12 all day. This road is stated to be the 4th most beautiful Rt in the U.S. and they are right! however no one told us that it is not recommended for Motorhomes, or at least one as large as ours. Smooth going to Boulder where we stopped for lunch and to visit the Anasazi Historical Museum. It was small but very informative. Back on the road we started climbing, and climbing all the way to 9600 ft. (we started at 4000 ft.) The landscape started as pines and aspens and cattle summer grazing ground but ended up in the high mountains. The land on each side of the road became more and more scarce until we were on just a ribbon of road with a 3,000 ft drop off on both sides going down into the Escalante valley. Make sure you look at the photo! Steve and I both nearly lost our lunch, thinking that at any moment we would be going over the side! The road was a total of 100 miles long, but in the Beast it drove like 200; 20mph uphill and had to downshift downhill to keep from flying into space! What a day! We
arrived safely though, and drank a toast with our friends the Catalanos. The next 10 days with them will be wonderful.
