I'm reading The Real Jane Austen, a biography that uses Jane's objects as the device (trope?) to get to the story. And I'm thinking how it reminds me of In Small Things Forgotten, read long ago in graduate school. As I vacuum my newly installed carpet, I think about the pleasure this Electrolux (thank you, Jennifer) is giving me and it's such a small thing. Then I think of my RV, a not-so-small thing, but small in the big scheme of things. And I think of the pleasure it's going to give Ed and me on our travels. Small things are best not forgotten. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/17/books/review/the-real-jane-austen-by-paula-byrne.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0... read more

Yup...Pittsburgh. We heard this was the best ballpark in the major leagues so we just had to check it out. PNC Park did not disappoint. Fantastic views of the city from between the three rivers. Excellent concessions (mmm oldbay chips). Very very friendly helpful people. And we just lucked out on wonderful weather. Yes...if you love ballparks, we highly recommend this one...though I guess I'm still a homer as I think Seattle still has it beat. Cheers!... read more

After Jamie and I said our goodbyes I headed to the mile high city, Denver, Colorado. This would begin the next phase of my trip involving a lot of sporting events. I spent a few days here checking out the city and getting my first taste of NBA basketball action on this trip, with my team the Detroit Pistons taking on the home town Denver Nuggets. It was an entertaining game but unfortunately the Nuggets won (a trend I would soon find out). Next stop was Oklahoma City, where I’d get to see another game with the Pistons battling the OKC Thunder. My cab driver was a nice young lady who had moved to OKC from Florida. Although she had moved here herself, she wondered what possible purpose I could have for coming to OKC. One ... read more

Apparently my body was begging for sleep. A few days earlier I was starting to mumble my words whilst sober so I knew my body needed it. If you think about it for 1 month I have been going all out to see this great land and averaged about 6 hours a day sleep averaging about 6 hours a day driving (including the rest days) It was eventually going to catch up but why… why on an American Halloween. It was so unfair because my two prior poor performances on the drink in JP5 have been at the moment I have met these two guys I’d spend the night with. One being our good friend Robert Parish and another being a Pittsburgh local I met a day after Robert Parish and in Kosovo. I had a ... read more

If there is anyone who is yet to experience the joy of being around birds, a visit to Pittsburgh's National Aviary is a must. It is the largest, nonprofit, indoor facilities in the US. A great interactive experience, one gets to have a close look at birds from across the world, many of whom are on the endangered species list. I was absolutely thrilled to see the Kukubara and the Sloth for I have only ever read about them. In fact, I wasn't quite expecting to be able to see the entire range of birds as mentioned on their website but was indeed pleasantly surprised. If you tread around gently with patience, one should be able to see a lot of birds between the trees and amidst the foliage. A great job done by the ... read more

We drove through Ohio with no time to stop at Columbus to see the Santa Maria replica as hoped. We arrived in Pittsburgh, winding through construction, to find our friends' home in a challenging urban neighborhood. These special friends are very dear to us since our friendship began when they were leaders in our youth group. They were soon married and began a family; a few years later we followed their pattern. They have always had a heart for ministry and subsequent years have found them doing campus ministry at U. of Pittsburgh. Several years later we heard that they were building a house in the neighborhood where they now live and joining an intentional community of Christians who are choosing to live there and be the salt and light of Jesus to the surrounding community. ... read more

I'm happy to report that, almost 2 weeks ago, my passport arrived in the mail! It's shiny and new, and I look pretty cute in the photo. All in all, I can't complain. It was even on-time! Yesterday, I e-mailed my application to ICPS. During an e-mail exchange, they clarified that the full course load takes approximately one year to complete, including breaks between semesters. It's slightly longer than I had planned to stay, but I think I can make it work. I'm continuing to work on my Farsi, with the hope of placing out of Basic I. Pimsleur's starting to bore me, so I've been listening to KIRN (a Farsi radio station from LA), watching Voice of America in Farsi, and brushing up on my (see: acquiring some) reading/writing skills. فارسی خیلی خوب بلد نیستم.... ... read more

Awaiting our flight at Pittsburgh Airport...what an eventful trip up here....Larry Richie & Bill Dawson are ready to dump me already because I ordered a burger well-done and we were the first to order and the last served at Fridays.....what a fun group!!! At McDonalds in Weirton the manager thanked us for our "laughter"....now I can't reveal the source of that laughter....you will have to ask Diane and Amanda about it......we are now waiting at the gate - early because Pat read the arrivals board and thought it was the departures board and thought our plane was leaving early.....some cause for excitement......I am including some pics....Larry's French Onion Soup was the topic of conversation...everyone loved french onion soup but nobody ordered it....go figure.....if the trip to the airport is any indication of the kind of trip ... read more

It's been 5 long years since I visited the island nation. As promised, here is the first clue. This is an early map of my destination. I recently read that two countries in the region lay claim to this map, which makes it prefect for today’s posting. Some of you will recognize the map at first glance and others will get answers on Google. The culture of this island has been influenced by its closest neighbor, along with the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, who occupied the island at various times throughout its rich history. The bags are being packed as I write this, with clothes and gifts, with the gifts taking up most of the space. This is not only a vacation, but a chance to meet family as well and my chance to ... read more
