We had many miles to cover in a day so started early and got the games cranking early. Nicola's American states jigsaw puzzle came in handy, we quizzed each other on categories like all the east coast states, all the states that start with m, all the states that start with vowels. My american geography improved dramatically over those few hours.
Andre got peeved with the ridiculous pre pay pumps at the petrol stations. That's a lot of p's. You have to pay beforehand so it becomes impossible to fill the tank as you don't know how much you need. I thought he was gonna turn into Hank off Me, Myself and Irene and go beserk.
Once finally at the township of Whitefish we checked into the local best western, our new hotel of choice, before driving down to the lake. We skimmed stones until our arms ached then had a look around the rural town. Back at he hotel we hoed into some beers and a humungous pack of chitos. We accompanied this with some boisterous drinking games, one which involved Andre and I talking with the accent of old british ladies.
A short walk into town
had done little to sober us up or make room for food, nonetheless we all ordered large pizzas and beers. Soon after finishing our pizzas we all regretted eating so much but kept trucking on with the drinking, by this stage I would describe us as shitcanned. So much so that whenever the waitress came round to talk to us we had to start every sentence with a word that started with s.
E.g
Waitress: How's your meal?
Us: Superb
Waitress: Can I get you another drink?
Us: Sounds swell
Waitress: Where are you guys from?
Us: Southern Hemisphere
Waitress: Australia?
Us: Shut your face and never talk to us again
Something like that anyway, well except for the last bit, we actually just slapped her. By the time we left the pub we were all bloated like fat budhas, I would have beaten Steven Hawkings and stolen his wheelchair if given the chance. But we courageously pushed on, drinking with some locals, who coincidentaly were about to open up a new pizza joint. I almost spontaneously chundered just hearing the word pizza. We learnt of a 'pray for snow' party up on the mountain so caught a bus
up. Once their we lost our newly found friends and quickly got bored of the pretensious young snowboarding wannabes. So after mocking them for a bit we made like Robin Bain and shot home.
Sunday rolled round and there were a few sore heads, had the free breakfast not enticed me out of bed I'd probably still be there. Once fed and ready to face the day we drove to Glacier National Park. Although hung over we somehow thought it would be a great idea to go and see Avalanche Lake. Not the most enticing sounding lake really.
The walk was worth it in the end, we trudged through snow and sleet along slippery paths which constantly warned of the danger of grizzly bears. It is quite exciting, had I seen one though, I doubt I would be writing that. The lake was covered in snow and we edged our way out, hoping like crazy the ice wouldn't crack. We got some photos of the curious blue jays and of us standing on a frozen lake, quite novel, some might even say Ice-awesome. I'd love to say that the walk cured my hangover but the fact that I
slipped over three times on the way back curtailed any possibility of that.
On the way back we visited another lake, which was deadcalm and had amazing skimming stones. After getting our daily dosage we returned to the hotel. Andre bust out some sort of strange chicken dance whilst driving, he'll have to work on the ol' dance moves before the wedding by the looks of it. The only thing I remember of that night is that we found a huge pack of donuts at the supermarket for cheap so had to buy it. When in Rome.
So that was our trip away with Andre and Lisa, good times, good times. I'm looking forward to their wedding next year. Hopefully Lisa will bust out her flashdance moves and Andre dresses up in his orange outfit and swats with a pitchfork at bits of beetroot being hurled at him . It's a long (but true) story!
