Hello world! Story #1: Well, it's me again...that procrastinating graduate student in Lansing. Things have been very interesting here. First off, how can it really almost be Christmas time? I still can't believe it. With all of these proposals and committee forming and teaching and graduate classes, the time has just flown by. The beautiful fall leaves are now almost gone and the trees are left barren. I snagged a picture of one today with a bunch of birds in it though so you can get a feel for what it looks like. It's weird because every day I wake up, I think of Poland. Last fall, my flatmate and I took off to Poland to go explore and it was an eye-opening experience. While we saw some gorgeous architecture and enjoyed cheap european cuisine, we ... read more

Yes, it is November and I have successfully survived two and a half months of graduate school. Whew! It has not been an easy feat though! Well let me start from the beginning: I got my acceptance during a somewhat special week in March. It was a notification via email, but my big fat acceptance letter came in the mail a week or so later. An awesome change to the thin, generic rejection letters I had been receiving. At the time, there was so much other stuff going on that graduate school seemed so far away. Well if you read my last couple blogs, you know that I left Alaska and wound up in Lansing, Michigan. My first few days of graduate school consisted of me wandering around aimlessly with a campus map wondering how I ... read more

Just a quick update from Spartanville before I continue on with my day. The past few days have been a little more eventful which has been pretty nice. Friday was a lonely, quiet day...very windy on campus and just too quiet. Days like that definitely make acclimating to a new home a little rough and I just wanted to shut the world out and be left alone. But that night, another couple hours with the F.A.R.T. group at Crunchy's raised my spirits. Amazing how being around people that talk research as much as you makes you feel better. So I went home pretty happy Friday night even though I was home alone again. Saturday morning was a bit of a blur as I got up really early to go tailgate. I couldn't decide whether to bike ... read more

Well it has been about two weeks since I arrived in my new little home known as Lansing, Michigan. And there are a couple of things I have learned quickly about Michigan. #1. You do NOT go anywhere downtown, West, or Southwest of Michigan Ave alone, especially at night! #2. East Lansing is like this invisible line marking a swift change from ghetto Lansing to more upscale college community and the merge into ritzy, gorgeous homes. #3. It's flat. It has not been all bad since I entered Spartanville, but it definitely didn't start on the right terms. I arrived on August 14th, tired, hot, worn out, and needing to get out of my car. I was so exhausted because it took me four days to drive over from my parent's house in Idaho. The drive ... read more

Hola Nuevamente.

Counting down to my next international adventure. I have been invited on a professional delegation to South Africa where we will be learning about their education system and how the evolution of their social system (pre- and post-apartheid) has influenced access to primary, secondar, and tertiary education as well as how the evolution of societal values has influenced the values and approaches to education. This is another dream come true trip for me, so one of my major goals is to share it with you. I'll be in S. Africa from April 14th through the 23rd, so stay tuned for another amazing adventure!... read more
