Day 16: Early start from Boise saw us pick up the Trans America Trail (TAT) which we were now following as the BDR headed for Nevada & we wanted to get to Utah to re-connect with the Utah version there. We had all bought mesh pants from Fly in Boise the day before to help cope with the heat, however this wasn't the best day to test them as we had a very cool ride for the 1st couple of hours, in the shade alongside a very scenic river. Our destination today was Featherville where we stayed 2 years ago meeting Robbie the gunslinger in the local saloon. This time the only accommodation in Featherville was full so we had booked at Paradise Lodge just 8kms further on. After good riding on the TAT we arrived in ... read more

Day 14 From Red River Lodge we had around 10kms of gravel to return to the main road. Plenty of deer threatening to test our braking skills along this trail. Back into Elk City on seal we refuelled & wondered about the instructions we had been given the day before by a local that to get to Red River Lodge we had to take a gravel road out of town?? After refuelling we had a winding sealed road alongside a fast flowing river with rapids every 100m. Past some modern gold slicing pumps which we stopped & viewed - the whole area was extremely interesting & scenic. After 20kms of this road we were into a gravel forestry road with warning signs that there were logging operations occuring. Shortly after we met a fully laden logging ... read more

Day 12 Leaving Pierce we soon connected with the Lolo Motorway which runs for around 100kms. This is an old Indian trail & was also used by explorers Lewis & Clarke when they were traversing this region looking for a waterway which they never found. Why its called a motorway is hard to fathom as it is a rough gravel duel track winding across the mountains reaching 2100m where there was still the remains of some slowly melting snow drifts. We encountered other riders going both ways including one Canadian who had gone over the bank on his Yamaha Super Tenere laden with luggage so probably about 800lbs - fortunately not too far, - we stopped to help him & his brother pull the bike back onto the track with with ropes & a pulley - ... read more

8/7 Ellen had asked me what I would want to see on this leg of the trip and besides enjoying their company and seeing a bit of what Spokane had to offer I said, “we are so close to Idaho I would love to see Couer d’Alene”. The four of us left for Coeur d'Alene at 9am heading east, driving though golden rolling wheat fields and farmland. After an hour we arrived at the lake house of Jim and Ellen’s friends Jeff and Julie. Long time residents of Couer d’Alene, Jeff, a retired Pediatric Eye surgeon, and his wife Julie were happy to share their little piece of heaven with us. The quiet relaxed bay where their summer home is situated reminded me of my childhood on Lake Winnipesaukee on a hot hazy day. Rocky steps ... read more

Day 8: Left Ponderay a bit later around 9am. Pretty soon on gravel forestry roads once again. We did an In & Out track up to 2100m to a view point where there was a forest fire look out building. Returning to the main BDR route we found the road closed due to a bridge washout. There had been signs but decided to take a look. The last 50% of the bridge was washed away. We built a ramp with timber from the bridge but then decided on discretion rather than valour so we backtracked (weren’t sure on penalties for being on a closed road) to avoid this section. On the way back to Clark Forks on a remote gravel road a large black bear wandered across the road in front of me. Heard me coming ... read more

After a delightful visit with my cousin Megan and her husband, we drove through eastern Washington, the panhandle of Idaho, across Montana and down into southern Idaho again. We enjoyed the beautiful views of Lake Coeur d'Alene, the Bitterroot Mountains and along the Clark Fork of the Columbia River. We crossed the Continental Divide twice in one day on this route and will cross it again tomorrow! We are now on Mountain Time and looking forward to reaching western Colorado tomorrow.... read more

Day 10 - Today was going to be a big riding day, 489 km in total, without a lot to see on this part of the journey. We left Prineville and surprisingly made our way up the range through very cool forests. A great riding road with plenty of gentle sweepers at 75mph and up to 5700 feet. Very cold near the top, down the other side and as it does so often in America, the scenery changes immediately to a deep rocky gorge. We came upon 'Picture Gorge', where to road winds its way through a beautiful deep canyon with amazing rock formations and outcrops on top. Not long after exiting the gorge, we stopped for morning tea at Dayville, a pretty little village, population wouldn't be 4 figures, but every cabin, house & shop ... read more

We were in Idaho. We went to Craters of the Moon we saw a big volcano and I found a rock that looked like a boat. Next we went to a cave. It was cold and I saw ice. It was called Shoshone Ice Cave. New adventures, or at least something different from working, what would that be, well of course going to Yellowstone. That seemed like a good idea so off I went, to the city of the angels, Los Angeles, where my trusty bike was, well not in LA downtown but in Upland, east of LA. Craig a fellow inmate of the infamous Adventure riders had graciously kept my bike in his garage and even taken it to be serviced and what not more. So here’s to Craig for his kindness and friendliness. He also got me through getting my insurance back and and getting my registration up to date, a true prince among men. One my lonesome I would probably still be queueing in some dingy DMV office somewhere. Why Yellowstone, well why not , it’s there and ... read more
