Getting up around 9 or 10, writing music till 4, then sunbaking. Joined in with the church choir, and very impressed with Stephen's conducting. Completing compositions at a rapid rate, and getting good feedback. ... read more

Saturday, trip to Tallulah Falls and lunch with Bill, Stephen's sponsor when he was at uni. The falls were dramatic and very scenic. Lunch was very southern: very fine congealed and chicken salad, lovely iced tea. On the way back Stephen bought a very large plasmatic TV. There now never seems to be anything decent on it, apart from the odd Seinfeld repeat. I had taunted him that his former modestly-sized TV was 'un-American'. Evening meal out at a 'Barbeque'. Not what I was expecting. Basically shredded pork, 'slaw and beans. Served on a plastic plate. In a trashy, run-down shed. Never again, although they enjoyed it. Sunbathing on the roof the next day, and the beginning of composing music for the church. ... read more

Woke jet-lagged. A run and a trip to Walmart seemed to help immensely (www.peopleofwalmart.com). Lovely warm day. Heavy humidity broken briefly by a thunderous downpour. Saw some of Athens in the daylight. An interesting mix of colourful old wooden houses and big shopping malls. This is my first trip to the US, so you may be able to tell me it's all like this. Brunch at Mama's Boy restaurant. Grits. Biscuits. Big Gs & T in Aromas Bar, then a pint in the Peasants' Arms, a fair hybrid pub/bar. Much catching up and remembering old stories from Wells. Stephen often interrupted by a phone call where he will say, "Yes, he's arrived."... read more

Arrived in Atlanta after a reasonable flight from Heathrow, having shaving off my beard. My face seems odd without it, but the promised heat will hopefully vindicate my decision. Breezed through immigration - despite my fears of being strip-searched and interrogated. Endured the bizarre double baggage collection system - don't ask, it's really dull. Met by Stephen and Patrick. It was the first time I'd seen Stephen in many years. We had sung together in Wells Cathedral way back in 1993-5. He hasn't changed a bit. Well, maybe a few grey hairs. Burger and fries at 'Varsity', an odd experience. The staff continually yell "Whad'll ya have, whad'll ya have?!" An hour drive east to Athens. Quick tour through the church where Stephen is director of music. Large, typical mock-Georgian building with very generous rehearsal rooms. ... read more

Two finals down, one to go. I cannot believe how quickly this semester has flown by. I picked up my passport today with my cool new visa, very exciting, so now I can officially go. Yay. As exciting as this next semester is going to be, I am sad to leave Athens. I love it here so much, and I don't know what I am going to do without all of my friends, most of them I won’t see until next August! It is bittersweet, for now, but when else will I get the opportunity to live in another country? Plus I'll finally be fluent in Spanish! I have to move out of my apartment on Saturday and I feel like all I ever do is pack. Ugh, and the thought of packing a semesters worth ... read more

This past weekend, I went farther south into the green world of Athens, Georgia. It was my first time out of North Carolina since I came down here on exchange, and it was such a fun experience. The UNCW softball girls rented a couple SUVs (2007s) and headed on the road on Friday. It took about 7 hours to get from Wilmington, NC to Athens, Georgia but the ride was a lot of fun. The first thing was saw was a place called 'South of the Border' that lies right across the North Carolina/South Carolina line. It's a cute little, Mexican world full of firework stands, some rides (twirling sombreros of all things), and lots of mexi-food. We didn't get to stop in, but it definately looks a fun tourist attraction if you have the ... read more

On our way to Athens we ran out of the little amount of veg oil we had left, and we were lucky enough to find a place along the way where we could get oil (after much searching, of course). So it took us quite a while longer than it should have to get to Athens, but we made it by evening. We had everything lined up to stay with Anthony from couchsurfing, and he was a pretty cool host. He even had an entire guest bedroom for us to stay in, which is rare. We were tired from getting up early and doing a lot of driving that day, so we just hung out at the house that night with Anthony and his girlfriend. The next day, Wes and I went to this really ... read more

Disaster has again struck our travel plans. First it was the knowledge that Burg Eltz (an uber fantastic castle in Germany) does not open for visitors until April. Now I have learned that the ferry on which we expected to cross from Italy to Croatia (Dubrovnik) does not run on the day we need it. With only a couple days until we fly out, I've got to scramble to figure out where to spend three days we cannot have in Croatia. At least it is off season and hostels will not be difficult to come by. Right now I'm thinking we backtrack into northern Italy or venture into western Austria on our way into Munich. The new possibilites for new places are exciting, but, hot damn!, I wanted to see Dubrovnik. (check out pictures online and ... read more

Hello Everyone, Hallo Alle Zusammen, friends and family, Freunde und Familie! The countdown to "lift-off" is ticking and I wanted to start by getting you all to add this website to your "favorites", so that you can follow my trip down-under via the WWW. I hope to make all of you jealous with the great pictures that are about to fill up this site, the stories of adventure travel and fun encounters with Koala’s, Kangaroo’s, Kiwis (the human and flying kind :-) and all sorts of other wild animals. Since this is the first go-around for me to keep a “public” travel journal, I beg our forgiveness for a lack of eloquent writing style (after all I was a business major who ended up a volleyball coach, and English is my second language :-) so if ... read more
