We made an early start to Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Eileen and I started with the Incredible Hulk roller coaster, a huge and fast thrilling ride. There was more than a little trepidation for Eileen because she had never ridden a roller coaster before. Afterwards she said that she kept her eyes closed for most of the ride because it was the only way she could cope. Her son Blair refused to believe that she had done it because when he was 11 he remembered her screaming on a log flume ride at Disneyland! The only thing he could remember her enjoying was the Tea Cup ride.
As the day wore on, the queues got longer and longer. In a day we got through all the key rides but wish that we had purchased a “fast pass” ticket to save us from standing in long queues. Our final ride was the Spiderman ride which we did for a second time just as the park was closing. We returned home very, very tired with sore legs from standing for long periods on hard concrete.
For our day at Universal Studios Florida we purchased a “fast pass”. The fast pass made
the day so much more enjoyable as we sauntered past the long queues for rides and we were able to ride multiple times if we chose. Also, we decided to stay in the park for lunch rather than take the long walk back to the car. We completed all the rides we wanted in easy time making the day so much more enjoyable. We left earlier and in better shape than the previous day so we would recommend the “fast pass” if you have limited time or you struggle with standing on hard surfaces for long periods.
Our third theme park day was at Disney World Magic Kingdom. I loved being in the Disney environment. A highlight for me was having my photo taken with Donald Duck (and Leigh didn’t complain about queuing for 40 minutes in the heat with all the small children, says Eileen). The rides were generally tamer than Universal’s rides and more mechanical than the high-tech rides at Universal Studios. We started with Space Mountain, a roller coaster inside a building. Eileen said it was easier to ride because it was dark and you could not see what was coming. I prefer to see the
scary bits coming!! We even did the Tea Cups ride for old time sake. A highlight was the log flume ride which ended with a fast ride down and a big splash.
We needed to post a parcel so we decided to take a short break by visiting the Post Office and returning to Magic Kingdom for the evening entertainment ... bad choice!! We left Magic Kingdom just after lunch but it takes over an hour to get out of Disney World. First you walk to the gate, then walk to the train station, wait for the train, ride the train, then walk to the transport that takes you to the car park, wait for the transport, ride to the car park, then walk to your car, drive out of Disney World, and finally there is the 20 minute drive back your hotel. You reverse this process getting back in! We went back in the evening to take a few more rides, see a show, watch the Main Street Electrical Parade, and to see the fireworks which were a real feature.
For exhilaration, Universal Studios is better, but nothing connects to the magical memories of your youth like
Disney World.
