Spaceship Earth Globe
Inside was a ride that showed you how our communication has developed over the centuries. On Days 2 and 3 of our Disneyworld adventure, the family and I headed to Epcot. The park is basically split up into two sections; Futureworld which consists of a number of different sections and World Showcase which celebrates different cultures of the world. The first thing you see when you enter the park is a gigantic globe type structure. Inside it was a really cool dark ride (similiar to pirates of the carribean) which shuttles you through time to see how cultures adapted over the years with their communication skills. It starts out in the time of the cave man writing on the walls and goes all the way up to the time when computers were adapted to be a common household item. Everyone in my family really enjoyed this as most of us like history and because everything was so well done. At the end of the ride you find yourself at the very top of the globe staring at a gigantic moving earth. Hard to explain, but it was really cool.
From there we headed into Futureworld and checked out a few sights. We really didnt enjoy this section of the park that much with a few exceptions.
'Test Track' is a ride where you experience all the different tests that cars go through before they can be sold to consumers. You go through things like hot and cold rooms, road bumps, break cheaks and tight corners. But the best part of the ride is at the very end, were they do a speed test and shoot you off to 65 miles an hour in about 8 seconds. Another ride, 'Soarin' is one that we were already familiar with since they have it in California. Its a simulation ride that makes you feel like your flying above the state of California and you experience the smell of orange groves, the wet splashes of the pacific ocean and the breeze of the wind. 'Nemo & Friends' was a ride we werent expecting much of but quite enjoyed the graphics. You sit in little sea shells and are circled around a giant fish tank which theyve somehow enhanced to have computer graphics of characters from the movie. Once the ride finishes you head into a room to 'Turtle Talk with Crush' which is a show were you can converse with the surfing Turtle from the film.
The main thing to
see at Epcot is World Showcase. Surrounding a beautiful lake are 11 'mini' countries from around the world filled with films, shops and food that display their culture. The countries include the United States, Canada, France, Morroco, UK (Britain), Norway, Mexico, China, Japan, Germany and Italy. It was set up so that when you walked into a new 'country' you would see the most famous sites and actually feel like you were really there. Then you could eat their kind of food, hear a live band play their kind of music, buy things you would actually find if you were there and learn facts about their people and how they live. We really enjoyed the music most from the Canada exhibit, which was a celtic rock band called 'Off Kilter.' Food wise, Matt and I loved Morocco where we ate some amazing pitas with lamb in them. Germany had the most interesting stores as they were full of hand made cuckoo clocks and medival swords and the UK had the best looking village including red telephone booths, fish and chips stands and a cute pub. We had alot of fun and it inspired us to add a few more must
see destinations to our travel list.
At the end of the day everyone gathers around the lake for a show that celebrates the people and places of the world. They have a giant world globe that sails out into the middle of the lake and turns into a screen displaying different things and is tuned to a musical soundtrack. It wasnt a very long show, but it had some good fireworks throughout and we enjoyed it.
