Ok to break with tradition this will be a short update blog…yeah OK we will see…. Well we got out of New York OK and decided that we would break with tradition completely and utilise the GPS in the car to get out from Newark airport and onto the motorway and south towards Philadelphia….yes you did I hear it right I used a GPS …so sue me!!! I always like to use a map but sometimes needs (and too many streets) must!! Headed south and made good time on the freeway and arrived in Philadelphia and looked for a car park near the visitors centre and think we did Ok because when we came up the stairs the sign read “ visitors centre car park” and we walked straight into the visitors centre…Gee wiz these GPS ... read more

Finally back to Washington DC! it took me some time. My first visit was back 9 years ago with Leslie. We stay only 2 days and I kept a great souvenir of that short stay. This time it's adult time....and we have legs to walk longer...further! We are staying next to the Pentagon. It was actually fun to drive next to the car park of the huge building to reach our hotel. Our little nest will be the Westin Crystal city. Nice decent room...and walking distance to a Whole Foods supermarket...perfect place to pick up nice food for dinner time. This time, we have many more museums on the program. Hotels in Washington DC can be pretty cheap in summer....but museums, are free of charge. Going around is also easy by metro, so put it simple, ... read more

What a day in Washington!
Welcome to the Congres....

A very sad day, as we have heard (no thanks to the American media) that Brucie has died. Well at least there is some cheer as yet another member of Donald Trump's dysfunctional all inner-circle has gone. On top of all the Charlottesville controversy, are we here to see the beginning of the end of the Trump presidency? There were a few final things to wrap-up in Washington before we left to drive to Philadelphia. My wife, son and daughter had not seen the Franklin D Roosevelt Memorial, so we drove there first. We all collectively agreed that this is our favourite of all the memorials. Whist we were taking a photo of our kid's standing alongside some statues in a queue, a guide told us that that was a very popular (i.e. unoriginal) picture and ... read more

Today is museum day so we needed to pick our preferred museums and go visit. My son and I wanted to go to the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum. My wife wanted to go to the National Museum of The American Indian. Leaving the hotel was a bit of a shock. Even early in the morning it was phenomenally hot - definitely the hottest day so far so it seemed like a long walk down to the National Mall. The American History Museum was fantastic. We asked a guide about the museum and, realising that we were British, he referred us to the Price of Freedom section, noting it doesn't paint us in a good light. The Price of Freedom is the largest section of the museum, but seems ... read more

It was a foggy start to the day, but that soon cleared and it turned into the hottest day since we arrived. Hot and humid. We were booked on to a tour of the Capitol Building today and it was advised that we leave 45 minutes to clear security, so it was quite an early start to the day. When we got there, the security was in fact quite quick so we had loads of time to mill around and enjoy the air conditioning in the Visitors' Centre, which is huge and very impressive. With time to kill, my daughter tried to find a passing Senator or Congressman to ask him what the wifi password was. The security around Capitol Hill is absolutely nothing compared to the White House. Traffic is restricted, but there are no ... read more

Stunning sunrise or not, I decided to give my feet a break for this morning and stay in bed, although I am still waking up early. When I looked out of the window it looked very overcast anyway, so I suspect that if I had got up and walked down to The Mall I would have been disappointed anyway. When we left the hotel, it wasn't just overcast, but it was pouring with rain. My wife and I put some macs on to dry. Such things were not cool enough for our son and daughter so they resided themselves to getting wet. We had booked on a Segway tour (a usual holiday event for us), so we needed to walk to 23rd Street where it started from. After a safety video (depicting carnage and mayhem if ... read more

I was still on UK time so I was up early and went out for another sunrise, this time to the Lincoln Memorial. For a second time, I was not disappointed and got a fantastic sunrise featuring the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool. Again there was me and a few other photography geeks, and, despite the hour, lots and lots of runners. When not photographing the sunrise I went up to the memorial itself for a photo of the statue of Abraham Lincoln. There were some police up there so I asked if it was ok for me to use my tripod. "Technically no, but you can go ahead". It was nice to enjoy the peace and quiet without all the crowds from when I was there the day before. Our daughter was planning on ... read more

David here... So our South America adventure was over and we now had only 1 month left of our RTW trip to go. The flight from Quito to Fort Lauderdale was 5 hours and we didn't sleep a wink. We landed just before 5am and had a 10 minute wait on the plane until Customs and Immigration opened. We first went through the automated kiosk area, where we had photos and fingerprints taken, and then onto a real person. We were asked a lot of questions about our time in the US and what we planned to do. They asked about our camping plans and if we had camping gear with us. When we replied that we were going to be buying what we need from K-Mart or Walmart he helpfully suggested that the latter would ... read more

As my body-clock was still on UK time (five hours ahead) I was awake early so I decided to go for a walk to The National Mall with my camera. And it was worth it. Come sunrise I was near the Capitol Building and it was stunning. Despite it being 4.30am, the streets on the way to The Mall were surprisingly busy - cars and people. I was wondering why so many people would be up and about so early on a Sunday, then it occurred to me that everyone was still out from the Saturday evening. No one seemed drunk, which is probably more of a statement on the UK than it is on America. The Mall was a lot quieter. Just me and some other sad photographers, all overjoyed at the fantastic sunrise. A ... read more

It's that first day of the holiday, which is basically our journey and very little else, so don't get your hopes up that there will be anything interesting to cover. We were flying from Heathrow Terminal Three (if you are still reading), which is showing its age, starting with the way in and the tunnel that's is clearly insufficient for the amount of traffic. Much to my daughter's embarrassment, I lost it with a taxi driver who was trying to cut-in from a faster lane heading elsewhere. We were booked to park in the short-term car-park. The long-term car-park is of course expensive at £107 (booked in advance) but the short-stay is £120. £13 and a bit of road rage seems a small price to pay to be able to walk between your car and the ... read more
