If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there......... We had 10 days in San Francisco which turned out to be a bit too long but its a big city and lots to do so we passed our time as follows:
North Beach Festival - we was lucky enough to be in San Francisco for the North Beach Festival, so we spent our second day there looking around the streets of chinatown lined we various stalls selling various market trinkets. It was a really nice day out and about and we ended up in a small park with food stalls and a stage so we sat around in the sun and watched an odd band playing away with the tramps jiving away in front of the stage was funny!
(by the way North Beach is just a neighborhood in San Fran not a beach!)
Golden Gate Bridge - No trip to San Francisco is complete without seeing the big red bridge, so we visited it twice, once by boat and went underneath it, and another by bus
and walked up to it but choose not to walk across it as its quite long!
Exploratorium - A whole lot of fun was spent here at the Exploratorium, its like the science museum. Everything is there to be played with from the moment you get in the door, There was so much to do there that we left at closing time and still hadn't played with everything. There was lots of kids about, and some so rude they took the toys off me while I was playing, I nearly cried, and wished I wasn't and adult to I could whack them one! Dave became very involved with the toys too, as you can imagine he also turned into a little boy, no one was allowed near his games while he was playing! And he had to be dragged out kicking and screaming!
Pier 39 and the Sea Lions - Lots of Sea Lions here that came along one day and declared it their home and they are still there sitting along the pier today. Pier 39 is a nice place to walk around with many shops, restaurants and coffee shops! We also visited Boudins a famous
San Francisco Bakery where we got to watch the breads being made and have a taste at the end, was very cool to see and yummy to taste, so we returned another day for lunch, Dave had the famous clam chowder that comes in a bread bowl. (round bread with top cut off, middle scooped out and clam chowder pored in! very nice!)
SFMOMA - San Francisco Museum of Modern Art - We spent some time at the museum but not a lot to say as it was ok but nowhere as good as some of the others we have seen. Still it gave us something to do.
Alcatraz - by Dave
this was my favorite part of San Fran a visit to "The rock" the proper one this time and not Uluru. you start with a nice ferry journey over from the main land
docking at the jetty on the island, from there you take a walk up the islands hill looking at the smaller exhibits on the way up to the main prison block at the top of the hill. The main prison block isn't as big as i thought it would be but still
pretty big. once inside you are offered a free audio tour of the facility. You hear comments from previous residents of the prison as well as stories of the infamous residents, such as the bird man and Al Capone. The tour lasts about a hour walking you around most of the prison, ending up back where it started. We then explored the gift shop and a bit more of the lower part of the island before returning to the main land on the ferry. took about 4 hours total with the ferry crossings but was well worth the time and money we spent on it.
Cable car to Lombard St (Crookedest Street) - We took the famous cable car to the also famous crookedest street in America. The steep, hilly street was created with sharp curves to switchback down the one-way hill past beautiful Victorian mansions. The street is paved with bricks and is an amazing site to see. If it wasn't for the curves, easing out this treacherous slope, people would be killed rolling down it.
Shopping - Food Courts and Cinema - Of course with so much time and so many shops there was money
to be spent and thats what we did, I managed to buy a new small suitcase to hold all my new items! I wont list them cos I can just sense everyones reactions!! With a lack of kitchen facilities at our hostel we had to eat out everyday for lunch and dinners, which meant lots of Food Court meals as its cheaper and luckily there was a very nice salad place to eat from, which made a change from all the greasy foods. We also visited the cinema which was very very nice and watched Knocked Up made by the people who made the 40 Year old Virgin was sooooo funny!
