As I checked into the campsite lastnigt I asked about staying an extra night, that way I could have an actual whole day off riding. The unhelpful guy informed me that I couldn't stay and that I had to be out of the campsite before 9am the next morning…bummer! So today was back on the bike and back to my adventures, headed for a small town called Half Moon Bay, about 100km from Santa Cruz. I'm sure it would have been a very beautiful ride but the fog was back and didn't let up all day so it was a pretty bleak 100km and I was glad when I arrived. As I don't have much news from today I thought I'd take you through a typical day: I usually wake up around 7, as that’s when ... read more

On the San Francisco peninsula near the coastal town of Half Moon Bay, up on the Skyline Ridge of the Santa Cruz mountains, are fabulous hiking trails through majestic redwood forests. This week, I resolved to explore as much of the Purisima Canyon Redwoods as I could. On Day One, I drove south a few miles from the junction of Highway 92 and CA 35 (Skyline Blvd) until I saw the Open Space Preserve sign. I parked the Jeep in the ample parking lot and headed for the trails. Some maps were available at the info board, so I picked one and chose the day's route. Today, I did a Purisima North Ridge to Whittmore Trail Loop, nearly 4 miles round-trip, dropping down from the 1600-ft. elevation at ridge top to the northern gulch of the ... read more

“This is the art of life,” he said dreamily. “You may yourself as an artist develop the game of your life and lend it animation. You may complicate and enrich it as you please. It lies in your hands.” Steppenwolf - Hermann Hesse These last few days I have been making my way up the Pacific Coast Highway. Along the way I visited Hearst Castle (for you Dad!) and it was beautiful. I have been sick with a cold for a few days so I mostly drove, rested and read. Today I arrived at Pigeon Point (just south of San Francisco), where I am going to stay for a couple nights. It is a hostel that is at the bottom of a lighthouse. Tonight I sat at the lighthouse and listened to the waves crash upon ... read more

I decided to make the drive down to Ano Nuevo to check out the Northern Elelphant Seals during the pupping season. During the pupping season, all the hikes into the pupping areas are guided. You can go there other times of the year without being guided, and still see Elephant Seals though. I decided to take the guided tour to see what I could learn. While these seals come to this area twice a year, the spend a vast majority of their time out at sea, far out at sea. While that must be a tiring existence, when they are here this time of year, they are generally here for around three months or so. Must be they get the majority of their rest for the year here. It is supposedly a 1.5 mile hike from ... read more

On my way back North from Ano Nuevo, I stopped off to take a few pictures around the Pidgeon Point Lighthouse. It was only a handful of miles North of Ano Nuevo, also right off of Pacific Coast Highway, highway 1.... read more

Just passed Half Moon Bay, wild camping place, 13-11-2002. I leave Pete's house late morning following the road behind his house that will bring me to Highway Number One, the main road between Santa Cruz and San Fransisco. Once again I'm on my own, back on my cycle, my legs going up and down the pedals all day while my mind goes inside its own gary mass that inhabits the top of my skull and controls my body, my mental processes and makes me who I am. When one cycles all day there is not much for the mind to do. Controlling my main leg muscles is easy work and probably takes only a fraction of what the human mind is capable of. One will go through a lot of mental stuff like frustations suffered before ... read more

After a short hike with the little one yesterday, all we ever planned was to camp in a beach & relax. I've always loved the beach in Pacifica. It is close to civilization & that was needed. You can never be over-prepared with the little one. So, we just drove, parked, set up our tent(in a not-so-private beach), and R-E-L-A-X-E-D! I was not too happy with the fireworks photos. So, with an intention to sharpen my skills, I ventured to our frontyard. A short observation! People are interesting, specially if you don't know them _______________________ “Babies don't need a vacation but I still see them at the beach.
