Long day of waiting/traveling. First day of Marine highway travel. Left Skagway @ 3:30. Made a stop in Haines then on to Juneau. Arrived in Juneau at 10. Didn't get to our new lodging until 11:15 pm. And it was dark out at that time????. We were on the slowest vessel of their fleet. Only wet at 14.5 knots. Usually only takes about 2 hrs to get here. Rainy was a little freaked by spending all that time in the bowels of a boat. It was all worth it - Our place here is phenomenal ... read more

We started the day by ourselves at a table for two in the Dining Room. It was a glorious day; although, the daylight was barred from our interior cabin, here in the dining room we could see the distant shore as the channel was narrowing. On our northbound journey through the passage over three weeks ago an oppressive pea soup fog had obscured any possibility of scenic viewing. Those who had opted for balconies might have felt cheated; but, not so today. We stopped in the Explorer’s Lounge and picked up today’s Sudoku, and they’ve reverted to the extra small size making annotation difficult. Midway through the Hard puzzle, Sharon was off to the cabin with a, “This is ridiculous…” and that was the end of Sudoku. I too gave up on the Hard puzzle a ... read more

So the sun finally came out. The morning we sailed into Scagway the view out of my stateroom window was solid cloud/mist and my heart sank. I was excited because I had booked a tour with a local photographer and was hoping for some pretty spectacular landscape shots. It was still rainy and quite cold when we met at the end of the pier as instructed. There were only 9 out of the whole ship's contingent signed up to do this tour, and as there were two photographers and two vans, I was delighted to find myself onboard with just 4 other photographers. I'm not sure what I had imagined we would do, or where I thought we would be taken. The tour blurb that I first read said that no matter what the weather, our ... read more

Cruising in Alaska I'm starting to get the message. Its rare to get a sunny warm day in Alaska. Its rarer still to get a sunny cloud free day in Glacier Bay Alaska. As the Park Ranger said today, when the barometer goes up it means rain. When the barometer goes down it means rain. When it stays steady, it means rain will continue. Its 7pm on day 2 of my time on board the Island Princess cruise ship and we are just about ready to drop off the Park Rangers who came aboard at 9.15 this morning and who have given us lectures and narrations on and off all day as we have traveled approximately 100 kms inland on the waters of this bay and viewed some amazing mountains and glaciers. Overnight, after a glassy ... read more

Tuesday, August, 16th, 2016 Day 14: Inside Passage, Alaska – Salsa class – Whale !!! For our last day at sea, we took advantage of the many activities onboard the ship. After a culinary class and delicious salmon bake we headed off to learn salsa on the upper crow’s nest deck. It was pretty hilarious, as the salsa teacher kept on losing our attention when we saw a whale breeching in the distance. Everyone, forgot about dancing and ran towards the windows to get a good view of the whales. After learning a few salsa steps that I don’t remember, Renata and I headed to the library to play our final game of scrabble while listening to some enticing classical music. Tomorrow, we have one more day left in Vancouver before we have to head back ... read more

Thursday. August 11th, 2016 Day 9: Inside Passage, Alaska – Shipping away! On this day at sea, we took advantage of the many activities on board the ship. We witnessed a culinary show in the Culinary Arts Center, experienced our first live art auction, and watched Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for movie night. At the culinary show with Chef Estovas, we learned to make salmon tartar and salmon with shimp scampi. That’s a lot of Salmon! During the Art Auction, Renata won a painting and Spa treatment. Lucky her! To end off the night we watched the movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. We heard bad reviews for the film and we would have to agree. The film was all over the place with no real reason for Batman to despise Superman. Oh ... read more

Our 14-Day Northbound Tour from Vancouver to Fairbanks Alaska 25 to 7 August 2016 The following is on the 7-day cruise. A separate blog will cover the 7-day land tour through Alaska. After a quick breakfast in our Calgary hotel, we had a 1 hour 30 minute flight with Canadian Airlines from Calgary to Vancouver. We hopped into a taxi in Vancouver, which took us straight to the cruise ship port next to Canada Place. Check in took under 1.5 hours which would have been shorter if we had all had our visa for the USA. Since Tom and I had been to Hawaii in June 2015, he had a new passport so had a different passport number and therefore the 2-year ETSA was no longer current. Sheryl only had a Canadian ETSA. They both had ... read more

Today is our anniversary. Happy anniversary to us! We had a very good day and it completes another very good year. We also got nice notes from the Brinks and from Elizabeth wishing us a happy anniversary. Thanks. And the cabin steward put balloons and a poster on our door announcing our anniversary to everyone who walks past. This morning also was Laundry Day. We could not bring clothes for 14 days, so obviously there had to be a cleaning and resupply day near the middle of the overall trip. That was today. David got up a little before 7:00 and took the clothes down to the laundromat, but it did not open until 8:00. About 7:30 the Sieberts called and asked if we wanted to go to the formal breakfast with them. Janet went with ... read more

Our first journey this time, to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary, was an Alaskan cruise and a visit to the Canadian Rockies, prior to visiting the grandkids on the US east coast. The first of these was a 7 day round trip from Vancouver on the Holland America vessel the 'Volendam', visiting each of Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay & Ketchikan. We arrived in Vancouver on the Wednesday morning after a 14 hour direct flight from Sydney, and found it easier to commute direct with our baggage to the cruise ship, rather than making our own way across the city. What we didn't realise was that once we were on the ship, we had passed through US immigration and were thus unable to go back off the ship and explore Vancouver. This wasn't a huge hassle as ... read more

What a ride! Booking this ferry trip was almost accidental - I was looking at volunteering at the Raptor Recovery Center in Sitka when I found the Ferry System and that just clicked for me. Well, I know I would not have it any differently than it worked out. It still sort of surprises me that I take off and do these trips by myself..... Standing at the yawning open belly of the M/V Malaspina on that day so long ago that was only one week past, I wondered at the adventures to come, wondered about how I was going to deal with doing this on my own. I had no doubt that I would have a fabulous time, but wondered anyway. Well, I was not on my own after all. Finding my way around the ... read more
