Glacier Bay – Friday 7-12-13 What Aaaa day, whaaat a day, what a daaaaay!!! We had jumped on board the Coral Princess a couple of days ago, and one of things we did was explore the boat. Good idea right? So we found this place on the back of the boat a few decks below the top decks called The Sanctuary. “Ohhhh,” you ask. “What is that?” The Sanctuary is somewhat of a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the boat. You pay a small fee and get to hang out on the back of the boat where it’s pretty isolated from the wind and cold due to the protective nature of the ship’s design, especially under way. Its next to the gym, has a small little pool that looks over the back of the ... read more

17th July ’12 Cruising Glacier Bay We knew from the programme (that is delivered to your cabin each night) that we would be in the National Park from 10am to 7pm and so intended to spend most of our time out on the deck – apart from cigarette breaks which would have to be in the casino bar as it was the only place you could smoke during these times. So when I went in for a fag I said to the other people there well I’m sure we will all see a lot of each other today (ha ha) and was met by stony faces and silence, well at least I tried! I did on another visit meet up with one of our friends from Illinois, she was sat at the bar drinking and chatting ... read more

Sunday July 9th 2012 Reid Harbor to Fingers Bay BJ and I took off early to see Reid and Laumplagh Glaciers in a high state of organization. We found a place to land on a falling tide and took a walk across the rocky shore to the face of the glacier. In a few minutes we realized the tide was falling rapidly and hurried back to the tender to find it beached. Picture a mature, overdressed couple frantically trying to push, pull, and rock a 900 lb boat over rocks and mud back into the safety of the chuck watching the water recede faster than they could slide the boat. We grunted and panted and by sheer desire and by filling our boots with very cold water floated it. When we ... read more

Tuesday July 3rd, 2012 Juneau Last night I helped a big old wooden sailboat into the slip behind us. The captain said he had brought it around from Auke Bay and it was going on the grid tonight (at midnight). This morning he was high and dry and had a crew scraping and painting the hull and greasing his feathered prop. Our way out of the marina was very shallow, kicking up a little mud but we were over at the fuel dock by 7:00 AM when it opened. The attendant, an incoming high school senior was anxious to leave Alaska after graduation for Florida where the weather was warm and the women were “fine”. I said he couldn’t find any nicer people than in Alaska and he wasn’t as sure ... read more

Thursday July 6th, 2012 Hoonah to Flynn Cove and Kira’s birthday We spent the morning lounging. Keith and I picked up the shrimp traps and returned with one very large prawn and as with yesterday the bait box was full of shrimp larvae. BJ and Ruth took the dinghy over to the store and we met them out by the wharves and hoisted Bullfrog onto the Little Liza. We worked our way towards our destination up the coast by mooching for halibut; looking for the right underwater structure to drift over. Flynn Cove is a little nook along the coastline of Icy Strait. We worked our way up to the head and anchored there. It still looks exposed and I can see right up Icy Strait. We are well ... read more

Oh my god, how spectacular nature can be. This is obviously one of the most amazing places on this planet. The whole bay is more than 60 miles long from south to north and all of it was created by a gigantic glacier a few thousand years ago. There are many glaciers in the bay. The whole bay and surrounding area is a national park. We arrived at the mouth of the bay around 8:00 AM. The weather was kind of foggy with mist and pretty darn cold, the lower 40's. Not exactly beautiful for viewing, but that's the weather in the bay most of the time. The ship sailed all the way to the north end of the bay and then turned around and sailed back to the Gulf of Alaska. We have balconies off ... read more

Rose early today to get up to deck and get a couple of good seats for our Glacier Bay transit. It is COLD today (48 F), but the sky is a clear blue and the sun is shining, and the glaciers and surrounding mountains are just beautiful. A thermos full of hot water, some tea bags, a couple of blankets and we're good to go. We enter Icy Straight pretty early in the morning, and the transit is gorgeous. We spot sea otters, bald eagles and eaglets, and later on in the day, are followed by a pod of porpoises and have a small humpback playing next to the ship, breaching over and over again. The day could not be any more beautiful (well, a little warmer might have been better!), and later our cruise director ... read more

Slept in til 8:30 and rushed to get to breakfast by 9. Ranger is describing all that we are seeing. Camera acting up so my glacier pics are with cell phone. Going to try my SD card in someone else's computer to see if i am getting good pics. Very cold and many of us were wearing the same pink and gray jacket that we bought in skagway for $20. Very warm. Glaciers were spectacular. Captain announced that around 20 people were left behind from skagway cause they were on an excursion that could not return to skagway on the ferry. they spent the night in haines and were transported to juneau and flown by helicopter to somewhere in glacier where we sent out a tender to pick them up and return them to the ship. ... read more

We left the red inflatables head high in the shrubs next to shore. I've never had a bear mess with them but I always feel better if they are off the ground. It would be a long cold swim back to the boat if they got ripped up. I try to separate them in case a bear finds one they won't immediately get them both. Bears walk around with their noses to the ground and they seem to love chewing on the plastic buoys that wash up on beaches. After the narrow strip of spruce and hemlocks behind the beach we got into easy walking in open muskeg. But at the top of the muskeg we looked the sheer rock cliffs above us and couldn't decide which way to go. I'd loaded a GPS route, but ... read more

Our weather hasn’t been the best. It’s very misty and cloudy, so the pictures are grey and muted. I met a young guy who taught me how to get off of Auto on my camera, so I’ve been experimenting with settings and light. But mist is mist, and I’m anxious for a sunny day to see if my camera skills are getting better. We cruised up and back down College Fjord and then up into Glacier Bay. Sooo beautiful! The ship did a salmon bake on the indoor pool deck for lunch. The salmon is of course very fresh and delicious. I took a few hours off in the afternoon to explore the spa. The heated tile loungers offered a panoramic view of the mountains and glaciers. It was a pretty special way to see the ... read more
