Well, we're all packed and ready to leave tomorrow morning. We'll head south through Campeche, Champoton, Escarcega and Villahermosa before turning north for a bit and spending the night near Comalcalco. We've decided to make shorter drives in order to make it easier on us and the dogs. Tomorrow should take 8-9 hours. Here's where we'll be: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/15859234 We'll post again tomorrow evening with photos of the trip!... read more

You might think that a 15 passenger van would have plenty of space for us and the dogs, but once we loaded everything in the world that we decided to keep...quarters got pretty cramped. Most of what we are bringing back was loaded into the back of the van behind piece of plywood to keep the dogs from getting into it. The rest is under seats and bunjee'd into corners. When we packed, I put all the big things in place while Jill came back through and pushed the small stuff into all the open spaces. God help us if The Federales or US Border Patrol deside to search the van. They wouldn't find anything but tools, underwear and dogs toys...but it would take an hour or more to put it all back in place.... read more

Living in their mad homicidal world beneath the soil munching devouring consuming, antennae probing and strobing the multi-legged strangers weed and seed and feed beyond our sight. They are fellow travelers with you and I, these aliens. (Contemplating Insects, Author Unknown) ...or, it's just a dozen bugs having a meeting.... read more

We've decided to leave Hacienda Masul on Thursday morning the 16th of March. We've settled into a nice routine here. It's a lovely place but we can't wait to get back to the States. We'll be in Queretaro by next weekend and will spend a few days there with Eloy, Rocio and their awesome kids before driving on to Laredo.... read more

I've driven back into town to run some last errands before we leave next week. It was a long trip. I left at 8:30am and arrived at the shop at 9:45am. The first two miles after leaving the hacienda took 15 minutes because of the road. We're having heavy duty E class tires put on the van, the others were looking pretty pinched after we loaded it. Yesterday we brought the dogs back to the secured field at the hacienda and this time they managed to avoid falling head first into the frog pond...I'm attaching a few photos of them. As you can see, the hacienda has it's own little train track. Back in the day (when Masul was a working hacienda) a horse would pull carts in and out and around. Our dogs seem to ... read more

We closed on our home in Merida yesterday but unfortunately we now won't be able to move into our home in North Carolina until the end of March. So, we'll be staying at a place called Hacienda Masul for the next week or so while we wait. It's a beautiful hacienda located....well, we're not sure where its located :) We followed our friend Arturo (the owner of the Hacienda) so we're not completely sure how to get here. We are the only people here except for the caretakers. There are 8 dogs on the property (our dogs are happy about that) and also two horses. It's peaceful and quiet...a welcome change to the buses and car alarms of Merida.... read more

Headed south on Mex 261 to Merida. Came across Yaxcopoil Parador Hacienda . This is dated back to the 17th century signifying in Mayan language "the place of the green Almo trees" With 22,000 acres of land in the time of its greatest splender Yaxcopoil was considered was considered one of the most important estates in the Yucatan due to its cattle ranch and plantation. After an hour tour we set off changing to Mex 180 . But again 40 kms to Merida another Military check. Took for ever but got off free. Tonight in a rather rough RV Park Rainbow. Today we did a tour of the historic downtown. There were three Spanish conquisadors named Franciscio de Montejo el Adelantado ( The lieutenant) Fransccio de Montejo y Leon el Mozo (His son) and Francisco de ... read more

Mexico! We finally made it into Latin America. When we arrived, an ubertaxi brought us to our hosts -Irving and Eliska- in Las Americas (near Mérida). Irving had to work, but Eliska took us to a place where they had great taco´s. After that we went for a beer where Irving joined us. The next day, our hosts had to work. They borrowed us their bikes to go to Dzibichaltún. On our way, Rick´s tire exploded because of the heat. We had to walk all the way back to the appartment and didn´t really know what to do. Then Eliska told us we could just go to the city. So we did. In Mérida we met up with couchsurfer Augusto. He showed us around a bit and then we went to a cantina, called "la Negrita" ... read more
