Mexico! We finally made it into Latin America.
When we arrived, an ubertaxi brought us to our hosts -Irving and Eliska- in Las Americas (near Mérida). Irving had to work, but Eliska took us to a place where they had great taco´s. After that we went for a beer where Irving joined us.
The next day, our hosts had to work. They borrowed us their bikes to go to Dzibichaltún. On our way, Rick´s tire exploded because of the heat. We had to walk all the way back to the appartment and didn´t really know what to do. Then Eliska told us we could just go to the city. So we did.
In Mérida we met up with couchsurfer Augusto. He showed us around a bit and then we went to a cantina, called "la Negrita" We had some drinks and good food. Later there was some live music as well. We only left because we had to take the bus back to Las Americas.
The next day we went to Homún, where we went to see some cenotes. We took a bicitaxi with a guide from the centre. The guy was only 14 years old! We
saw 3 cenotes and went to a nice restaurant where we invited our guide for some lunch. The cenotes were very impressive. We had to take stairs that went deep into to ground, where there was water you could swim in.
On friday we went to the archaeological site and the cenote in Dzibilchaltún. This time the bikes didn´t break. It was very hot and it took us about 30-40 minutes to get there. We walked around the temples a bit, but quickly we went to the cenote for a refreshing dive.
at 13:00, Irving and Eliska picked us up to go to Progreso. We had some good food there. Also, Augusto came to join us there. After we´ve had enough food (they just kept bringing food after we ordered some drinks!) we went to a beach nearby. We stayed there for a little while, swimming, playing and tanning.
After the sun had set we went back to the house to take a shower, before we went to a bar in Mérida to dance and have some drinks.
On saturday we had a lazy day. I wrote in my notebook and we watched some movies. Later, Eliska made
us some typical food from Yucatan: Torta de conchita pibil. It was very nice!
After dinner, (this time Eliska made a typical Slovakian soup) we went to Mérida. There was some celebration going on. They closed the streets for traffic and there were some stages with live music. We walked around and had a drink before we went to Misnébalam.... la puebla fantasma (ghost town).
It´s an abandoned hacienda (like a colonial ranch) with houses and a church around it.
I was playing music on spotify and the moment we drove on the sandpath to the town, my music stopped. I put on another song, because I thought it was the song that just didn´t want to play. After a few seconds that song stopped as well. I then closed the app because it freaked me out and Irving said: I told you there are things going on over here. a Bit scared we drove the long way to the town. There we parked the car under the tree where Juliancito (the boy that haunts the town) supposedly had hung himself. We got out of the car and walked towards the church. It looked all so sad because you can
see it must have been a beautiful place once. the trees are groing through the windows and the houses don´t have roofs anymore. When we arrived at the church, me and Eliska didn´t want to go inside, so Irving stayed with us while Rick went inside. Some minutes later, we heard the sound of someone clapping his hands. I was SO scared! We wanted to leave, but Rick was still making pictures inside the church. When he came out we told him what happened and that we wanted to go. He didn´t seem scared at all and told us he heard some footsteps next to him and he thought it was cool. COOL?! I was scared as hell. We went back to the car. Rick made some more pictures of the hacienda and then we left the town. I was very curious about it for sure. But I wouldn´t return again by night..
Our last day we spent on the beach near Progreso. Very nice and relaxed. On monday we had to say goodbye to Irving and Eliska. We had such a good time with them so it was a little sad, but it was time to move on.
