This morning we have planned to return to Puente Esmerelda, the little cenote/lagoon along the beach from our accommodation. It is Sunday, so bound to be busy hence we have skipped breakfast and are ready to set off at 8.30am. The sky is overcast and it has been raining so it’s a pleasant temperature for walking. The beach near our accommodation is fairly deserted. There’s a group of youngsters who have obviously had a night of it. They sway past us exchanging a slurred ‘good morning’! There are also a few people casting fishing nets, though we don’t see much sign of a catch. Finally, we have the ‘beach rakers’. These are the men with the unenviable task of raking up seaweed to enable us holiday makers to enjoy a pristine beach. It’s a thankless and ... read more

It’s a great shame that neither of us is fit to dive...as there’s really not much else to do here unless you are a sunbathing lover. So, it’s another late breakfast for us followed by a trip to the beach. It’s much hotter today. There was no rain last night. The forecast says we might have rain later but there’s not much sign of it right now. We have decided to prove the accommodation owner wrong by walking to the cenote. We are so near to the beach that we decide just to put our swim things on and take towels, snorkelling gear and water. We splash our way along the beach. I have taken the precaution of wearing shorts over my costume today...good thing as, even they, are in danger of getting wet. The waves ... read more

It’s very overcast today after the long rainstorm last night, making us think that our planned day on the beach is not the best plan after all. We have therefore decided to get up late and have a slap up breakfast back at the restaurant round the corner. We are pleased to see that the pool is being cleaned as we make our way out - at least they are trying. The restaurant is practically full up. We opt for the outside garden area as there is a nice cool breeze blowing through and all the tables and chairs have been dried after last nights torrential rain. We think there may be more on the way! I opt for a large bowl of fresh fruit, with yoghurt and granola whilst Ian has a bacon omelette, which ... read more

We pack our bags ready for our 1pm bus journey to Playa del Carmen. We really have not seen much of Tulum as we haven’t felt well. But to be honest from what we did see, we didn’t like it much. Still, our accommodation has been a little haven. We have enjoyed the peaceful garden and it’s been nice to have had access to the kitchen area to enjoy some simple home cooking. Our host hails a taxi and we are at the bus station within minutes. It’s not that far but it’s really hot now. The bus station is small and heaving. We manage to secure the last two remaining seats, but not before I have nipped to a chemist. Two bottles of cough medicine have not relieved the chest infections we both appear to ... read more

Wed 7-Thurs 8 November - Day 12 to 13 - Playa del Carmen Before going to Playa del Carmen, we travel to Chichén Itzá, an impressive Maya/Toltec site recently voted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The other 6 new wonders are Petra, Great Wall of China, Christo Redentor, Machu Pichu, Taj Mahal and Colosseum. Constructed between the 7th and 10th century AD, Chichén Itzá was a centre of pilgrimage for the Maya for over 1000 years. The most famous attraction is the great Pyramid of Kukulkan, dedicated to the feathered serpent god Kukulkan and built with such precision that a shadow serpent descends down the steps during the equinox. Our guide around the site was knowledgeable, passionate and could speak the Mayan language. One of the areas he spoke about ... read more

We have one day in Playa Del Carmen. Tomorrow early in the morning we fly back to California and our Mexico adventure comes to an end. We got up not too early. We’d had a long day yesterday and things in Mexico just start waking up at around 9 anyway. It looks like it’s going to be a sunny day, so we left our room to Playa’s 5th Avenue (yes, that’s what they call it) in a good mood. We saw a gorgeous white flower on the way, related to lilies I believe. Anyway, I took a picture. We found a place to eat on 5th Ave. A bit fancy and pricey, but that’s Playa for you. So we had some simple breakfast and coffee, pretending we didn’t understand the Israeli couple sitting next to us. ... read more

"All the water that will ever be is right now." ~ Good morning to anyone up, sipping a coffee and reading this old blog. I think I last left off a week ago, so you've had a week to build up your strength to read another one. :) This morning is so breezy and warm & it's like heaven to open up the sliding doors to the sparkling ocean, and the boats gently floating over the sea. The radiant Caribbean is flaunting its blue/green dazzling colors which can transfix you for hours. I have my laptop in the shade in a corner of the balcony listening to Mother Nature sing me a morning song. The sargassum (seaweed I referred to in previous blogs) has been well behaved and shows no signs of it landing on the ... read more

"You don't get smarter as you get older. There is just less stupid stuff you haven't done.~ Well it was fun to celebrate another birthday by the Caribbean yesterday, July 4th. There was a lot of activity yesterday with people coming and going. Al's parents arrived a few hours after Mom, Lara & Alex left. So sad to see them go on my birthday. Oh well, these teens are responsible and have to get back to their summer jobs. It was so nice to see Ray and Pat again, and for them to enjoy some family time with their grand-kids. (And us for that matter!) What a lovely birthday I had. Other than seeing some of my family off (not the good part), I was greeted with the offer of a margarita on the house at ... read more

Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canucks! As usual I came prepared to tout my country on its special day in Mexico. We have Canada leis, hats, tattoos and flags proudly waving in the breeze. Yesterday July 1st also would've been my Dad's birthday. As you know (or most of you know,) my Dad passed away last July. I am thankful we got in one more birthday before he left us. Lordy that man loved his birthday. I think he loved it because most of us would share that special day with him, on Canada Day. My Dad loved his ball caps, so here's to you Dad. It's pretty blinged out (which of course Clemmie would never have worn...(haha wouldn't that have been a sight. It's 'blinged' our for Mom to wear in honor of both ... read more

"One thing they never tell you about child raising is that for the rest of your life, at the drop of a hat, you are expected to know your child's name and how old he or she is" ~ Erma Bombeck Hello family & friends! Happy summer to you all! I love a good quote with a sense of humor. I've brought up Erma Bombeck in my blogs before. An American humorist way ahead of her time. And before I start, it's that time of year again for your annual check up. I am here to perform a memory test. Praying that most of you have forgotten the stuff I've written in the past so I can borrow from it. (Insert winking eye here.) I love the above quote because being one of 5 kids I ... read more
