During our previous trips we never took the time to exchange our USD for pesos since the exchange rate was running 10 pesos to 1 USD. We always found it easy to convert prices back and forth simply by moving the decimal placement. Well, in getting ready for this trip, it has become evident that exchanging usd for pesos is a much better deal. The exchange rate is about 15 pesos to 1 USD when I checked today. I decided to purchase pesos a couple of weeks ago after reading that the Mexican Govt. was going to be buying up currency to lower the exchange rate(increase the value of the peso) but it looks like that hasn't happened. Still got a decent deal at just under 14 pesos to 1 USD. This will make our trip ... read more

As usual, as our vacation approaches I submerge myself in every possible piece of information regarding our trip. I want to know everything I can about our desitination and I seriously think it drives my husband crazy. For this trip I have tapped into some previous websites that were useful when we travelled to the Riviera Maya in the past couple of years. Playa.info and Locogringo are always open on my laptop and I anxiously await a new post. We have less than 2 weeks before departure but as always, our work schedules are getting crazy. This means that I will need to pack a little bit at a time starting now in order to make sure that I don't forget anything and most importantly, don't over pack(always a huge problem). This year we have opted ... read more

A lazy day! We got up around 8 or so and headed once again over to the Turtle Bay Bakery for breakfast. This has quickly become our favorite food spot here. After, we came back to the hotel, rented fins from the dive shop for snorkeling and did a bit of shopping (the last of it while here, probably). Ever since yesterday, after the tour of the ruins at Tulum, I’ve started to have a different kind of appreciation/respect for the skeletons that are so popular in Mexican iconography. At first, I found them somewhat disturbing and disquieting. But during the tour yesterday, our guide told us that the Mayans traded with other places to get volcanic rocks to use in the desiccation process for corpses. They would bury their family members in the middle of ... read more

Friday, Dec. 19 We were scheduled to go out on a catamaran on a guided tour-fishing-snorkeling thing with the Akumal dive shop today. We got up relatively early (8 a.m.) and headed to the Turtle Bay Bakery and Restaurant. There have been a lot of positive reviews about this place on Trip Advisor and they were entirely right - it is amazing! Good, fresh food - lots of vegetarian options for breakfast. I had a large breakfast burrito with potatoes and egg and Clay had an egg scramble with potatoes and peppers. We went to the dive shop only to find out that the catamaran tour had been cancelled (no reason - just cancelled). We thought about doing a guided snorkeling tour in Akumal Bay but decided to go ahead and just snorkel on our own. ... read more

Last full day here and then we get to come home tomorrow. We’re both Mexico’d out. There’s only so much being lazy by the ocean two people can take....we’re kind of bored. Last night we had a fantastic meal at the restaurant at this resort. It was the first time we ate there instead of the snack bar (that has more casual burrito, burger type meals). It was also the first time I’ve ever had prime rib.....and THAT was incredible. We split a prime rib meal, a bowl of black bean soup, and a piece of key lime pie. MmmMMMmmm. They had a live Jazz band that was great and the atmosphere of the place was perfect. We wrapped up the evening with a stroll along the beach, under the stars. We spent most of the ... read more

Cancun to Akumal - Dec. 18 This a.m., we got up at a more or less reasonable time of 8:30 a.m. and headed back to the restaurant area at Aqua. This time, we went to the breakfast restaurant (they have three restaurants - one for each meal). One thing that we noticed was how incredibly empty the place seemed - there were people in the pools in the morning, but only a very few and just a few people on the beach. There was almost no one in the restaurant in the morning and no one in the hallways or on the elevators. More about this in a bit. Breakfast was great - more overly attentive service and good food. I had grapefruit, some sort of fruit/veggie smoothie and an egg-white omelet with spinach and feta ... read more

We woke up around four in the morning after such an early night to bed, but managed to fall back asleep until 8 or 8:30 :) Alex got a funny text message photo from his office staff that says, "We've got you covered" and then the picture is the three ladies that work there hanging out in his office. I hear we got 5-8 inches of snow yesterday. looking forward to that. :-/ It's 78 degrees right now with a high of 82 and sunny all day. Actually, I am excited to get home. I know I'm in Mexico, but I just started the new marketing job at South Central Credit Union and am lovin' it. I'm addicted to working...what can I say?... read more

12/18/2008 - 7:30 p.m. It’s 7:30 and I’m struggling to find the energy to type this. It doesn’t help that it’s pitch black by 6 p.m. The city of Akumal wound up being nothing that we had anticipated and quickly came back. Definitely no crab to satisfy our craving. Yesterday we went to Playa Del Carmen, hoping to find crab there since Akumal was a little disappointing, but a local said you can only find crab at upscale restaurants. Lobster you can find anywhere, crab....not a chance. We spent hours there shopping, eating, and walking the beach. This is the first vacation VACATION we’ve taken. No sight seeing, no adventures (aside from very occasional diving), just relaxing and enjoying the sun. Speaking of that....our savage tans are now savage burns. I wear 50 proof block, baby ... read more
