Never in my life, no matter how many sports I've played, have I endured the type of workout I got yesterday. At 7:30 in the morning we woke up and had to be at school for what the coordinators described as our "Welcome Party"of sorts. They said it would involve food, shopping, and a "short hike" up to the top of a mountain that would give a superb view of the city...HA! Well after a relaxing 45 minute busride we stopped in this middle of nowhere bus station and unloaded into what at first seemed like somewhere that civilization hadn't existed in years. From there all 50+ students started a treck into town. This time it wasn't too bad, almost interesting to walk towards the city...and the weather was newar perfect because it was so early ... read more

Last week was the week of the Fiesta. It all began on Sunday in Ixcatapec with Barbacoa at Adrian´s house (oh my Spanish addled brain had a problem with writing that, it wants to say the casa of Adrian) which is meat, in this case lamb, or possibly horse we were told (joke) is cooked in a pit Ray Mears style and it is yummy! Ali, his young nephew and one of the becarios was so pleased we were there and told everyone all week that we went to his house for the fiestas and that I had 2 beers and Becky had 2 as well! Then Tuesday was the Mother´s Day Festivals in camp with mucho dancing and merriment all round...that wasn´t really so much fun what with me not being a mother and all! ... read more

I feel like I have a lot of time to catch up on since I last wrote although in fact nothing MUCH has happened. After I went to Oaxaca city I got a night bus to travel the 8 hours to the coast to a wee place called Zipolite. It was so beautiful and so perfect it was as though Disney made it! Although if Disney had made it, it would have been deadly expensive and there would definately have been hot water in my hotel. Still for $80 who´s complaining! The sea was blue, the sand was white, the beach was lined by round huts with thatched rooves selling yummy food and drinks and did I mention it was a nudist beach? Hahaha, it was hilarious! The first day I was there I wandered along ... read more

First Ill start with the bad news. It is VERY hot here now! I thought it was just Guadalajara but every day here gets hotter! Certaintly no need for 3 blankets nowadays, and Im beginning to wonder why I brought 2 pairs of jeans! With the heat comes biting and crawling and generally wierd beasties. Firstly cockroaches...UGH they make me sick...I had been lucky enough in my life have never witnessed one before I went to Lanzarote last year and then I was disgusted! Here they seem to think theyre welcome in our cabaña with us. Back in the day before it got meltingly hot we used to beat the odd one or 2 out with the broom but I think they have multiplied in the heat and I had to kill 5 last night...normally I ... read more

Ok I feel I exaggerate a wee bit but seriously sunburn is the most exciting thing that has happened since what feels like forever!!! This weekends been sooo tedious! We have just been sitting around waiting for the next meal and making friendship bracelets. Mmm fun...NOT! Last night we went to a fiesta in a village where we teach and where a few of the becarios live. We were invited to a couple of their houses and were suitably taken-aback when we realised how poor they actually are! It certaintly was uncomfortable though it makes me feel that what we are doing is all the more valuable! One of the houses was like something in a geography video about shanty towns in Rio de Janeiro. The whole family lives and sleeps in one room about as ... read more

Just thought I´d give a quick update though nothing too exciting has happened lately! The main event being last night´s moon eclipse, which was truly beautiful! I don´t know if it was an eclipse in England too, but if it was shame on you if you weren´t up at 3am to see it. I didn´t actually know there was going to be one until we were mooching back to our cabaña at about 9 last night after a pretty good (for once!) English lesson on animals. All the kids were sitting on the grass with Jorge, so we quickened our pace to get past without being seen and have to join in (scivers I know) when I glanced up at the moon, which is wierd here anyway btw but more on that later, and it was ... read more

Hey everybody. Here goes our first try at this travel blog thing! yippee for technologia! Mike and I have been in mexico for 5 days now - and it seems like forever - in a good way. Tonight i´m writing from Tepotzlan - the mythical birthplace of Quetzalcoatl - a beautiful village nestled in the valley between rugged peaks. We just climbed up, way up the mountain to a temple-pyramid which gave an incredible view of the valley and the village, and also gave me a crazy sun tan which makes me look like an albino racoon. i now wear my sunglasses at night. (i´ve learned now not to fall into dreamland in the midday sun with sunglasses on!) So much to say, but we´re just trying this site out - so i´ll stop now and ... read more

This week has been amazing! If slightly wierd at times, for example, the reason I am sitting in an internet cafe 17 mins before my cena is going to be ready is because we were lured out of camp by a linguistic misunderstanding with the weekend director Urbano, who came to our cabaña, asked if we wanted to go into town, we agreed - just to be polite, then he walked us to the gates and stayed there....so we have to wait a decent amount of time to pretend we have been to town! Bummer. Since I last wrote, when we had just handed over our bedsheets (bad move), we had to fight to get them back on Tuesday as we didnt realise we had to get more from the washer women before they went home ... read more

Well...Im absolutely exhausted!!!! We were told last week that Monday is washing day and we should take our bedding to the gold toothed women for them to wash it (not any other day or they go crazy - thanks for the advice from previous Gappers!) so we did, and then decided maybe it was time to wash our clothes as well. So we went to the communal sinks which are mighty scary looking and after some initial confusion set about scrubbing and swilling, its not easy I can tell you! I went for the method of trying to recreate the spin of a wahing machine, with a big of bread kneeding thrown in...Im sure my clothes are probably ruined and not even nearly clean judging by the pool of dirty water in the bottom of one ... read more

Day Three in Campamento Camohmila and Lizzie and Becky have moved into their permanant cabaña. It´s pretty nice! It´s got little bits and bobs of all the GAP girls who´ve ever stayed there, some painted it pink, some wrote on the walls and everyone´s written their names above the door, I´ve taken some photos but I can´t work out how to get them on here! I may have another go in a minute! We cleared out the lockers and there are about a thousand books that have been left behind, LOADS of grammar books and teaching materials, so we needent have brought much with us really! The girls who´ve been before have left us a Survival Guide giving us loads of information about who to trust in the camp, where to go, how to survive English ... read more
