Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

The last few weeks of our travels have been a slightly odd period. A mental battle between enjoying the last drops of our walk-help-roam experience and wanting to get home and put in place our next chosen acts. So it was with a certain relief that we entered Mexico City our final stop. This fabulous journey of experiences, many that we will be dissecting and analysing for some time, was drawing to a close with our minds now almost fully focused on new horizons and challenges. Mexico City is big, twenty million people big. It’s much calmer and quieter that we [View Full Entry]

We had to leave Mexico early Sunday morning, and we flew back to Mexico City from Oaxaca around noon. We had a whole afternoon left. We ended up going to a really fun place - from the Zocalo - the huge main square in Mexico City - we saw the Templo Mayor. It is the only remaining Aztec temple in the center of Mexico City, and it has a really great museum to go with it. The atmosphere was quite happy and festive, with lots of Mexican teens on a field trip to see the place, and families, and people from [View Full Entry]

When I got to DF I was severely jet lagged, sleeping or walking around like a zombie during the day, and laying awake for hours at stupid o’clock in the night or morning. The first night didn’t help. An hour after I arrived, me and some others were given the choice between drinking 1 or 3.1 litres of tequila. It may be cliché, but It’s no exaggeration that a lot of tequila gets drunk here. We chose 3.1 and ended up drinking both)) Then a couple of us went salsa (standing on feet) dancing, and that’s about all I remember. I [View Full Entry]

Today was serendipitous in the extreme. While we had planned to take the Turibus around Mexico City’s main sites, the main thoroughfare was closed to auto-traffic so the only available route was the southern route. The turibus was as advertised its own adventure. it's a great deal, taking you all around town, and you can get off and on as many times as you want in a day. It's a double-decker bus and riding topside is called "the canopy tour". Mexico City has many trees and I did in fact get whacked in the face by a big tree branch. Our [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Mexico City to be greeted by Sharid Saná and her boyfriend. It was such a joy and relief to see the big pink sign with my name on it. I literally jumped for joy. Sharid could not be a nicer person, and although we were stuck in traffic for an hour and a half, she was very good-natured and we talked about bellydance most of the way, talking about teachers we've taken with and workshops we've attended. I had made up a little present of the By Dancers for Dancers 4 DVD, and I was thrilled that she [View Full Entry]

Tim Version: * Found Mexico City in the centre to be really beautiful and good fun. The outskirts, poor sad areas with little to no infrastructure. * Met up with Lyenet and had a wicked time at a local party of hers. * Saw amongst other things the temple of the Sun and the Moon! Huge place. The Mexico City isn't such a scary place version: * Im missing lots of photos due to my camera getting stolen in Lima, Peru, afterwards but its all good. Thanks Lyenet for the ruins photos! * Mexico City, before visiting it, conjured up to [View Full Entry]
