Mexico City 23-28 March 2018 So now we are in Mexico City after a short, if bumpy flight. The city is vast with a population approaching 30 million within the Federal District area or DF in Mexican. Although that number sounds horrific the historic centre is surprisingly easy to navigate. We had chosen a hotel for its location, nine blocks from the Zocalo but the road through seven of those blocks is mainly pedestrian walkways making the stroll in and out of the Zocalo very easy. China town starts just across the road. It is a much better area than where we stayed when we arrived in October. We realised that as soon as we arrived as there was no guard with a machine gun on reception! The first day we went wandering around the Zocalo, ... read more

With a population of between 21 and 24 million, depending on which suburbs fall into the Greater metropolitan area, Mexico City has almost the same number of inhabitants as the whole of Australia. It is the largest megalopolis in the Americas, the eighth wealthiest City in the world based on GDP, and is second only to London for the number of museums it has to offer. The city is situated within the Valley of Mexico; a natural setting that contributes towards to chronic pollution problems the locals have to endure. With over three and a half million cars on the road, carbon monoxide levels are so bad that authorities have warned people about exercising outside and have banned hundreds of thousands of inefficient vehicles. Having said that, the city enjoyed clear blue skies on most days ... read more

On Wednesday 21st of February started my big adventure/project "ConnAct". My parents brought me to the airport of Cologne in Germany where everything went smoothly and we had good timing. The flight to Cancún should have taken 12:30 hours but in the end it took us only 11h and I was quite happy about it. The flight was good, I had a nice Italian guy sitting next to me and during the flight I got acquainted with my new camera and I read about Mexico in my Lonely Travel guide. Everything was ok, but I was very nervous about the trip I was beginning and several times I asked myself :"What the hell are you doing? Just spent a few days in Mexico and then go home!" I swear, I'm never going to have another goodbye ... read more

Der erst... read more

México City! It's vibrant, it's exciting and it's crazy; the traffic is horrendous, everyone uses their horns as though there's no tomorrow but it's so full of life you can't help but be swept along with the magic of it all. The joyful South American music just adds to the charm. But it certainly has its dark side; there's a huge gap between the rich and the poor. There are many homeless people and many more working in menial jobs while others work in criminal activities to eek out a living. Those at the bottom of society are certainly much more prevalent than those at the top and I'll be surprised if anything changes in that respect. Nevertheless México City is one of the most important financial centres in the Americas. It is located in the ... read more

Sunday, 26 March Both flights were quite eventful as far as turbulence went. The LA leg was bumpy for over 80% of the time, and the Mexico City flight was like a rollercoaster with those high rises and stomach curdling drops. I didn’t mind it though. The Air Canada lounge at LAX was a good place to whittle away a couple of hours between flights. We arrived 2 mins late to our Mexico City apartment, which is pretty impressive given I had to estimate how long it would take to get through customs and immigration and catch a taxi. Our AirBnB host, Pablo, was there as organized, and after a quick handover of how things work, he walked us several blocks out of his way to one of his favourite restaurants, La Buena Tierre. The menu ... read more

I have wanted to visit Mexico City for many years. Canadians have the second largest city in the world literally in their backyard, but few consider it a tourist destination as they generally head to the country's beach resorts. I do appreciate the safety concern over the city, but I was quickly assured when I read the Canadian government's Travel Advice and Advisories for the city. While there are a number of travel advisories for the western and northern states, there is none currently for Mexico City. As it turned out, I felt safe during my entire visit. Once again, I chose two neighborhoods to fully appreciate what Mexico City had to offer. Our first stop was the neighborhood of Roma Norte, which looks more like a European neighborhood than a Latin American one. While it ... read more

One of my many trips to Mexico. This time it was for Martin's 50th. Martin is an Orozco and Orozcos are known to be very generous people. It was the best 50th birthday party I've ever been to in my life. It took place on his ranch on the outskirts of Mexico City. https://youtu.be/qRJLMZU5PSE https://youtu.be/APJ-EexlW80 https://youtu.be/b1cVqnXB2VA https://youtu.be/tHkbPan9Y0o https://youtu.be/KQYflmZg57w https://youtu.be/oxT_SRAmx5Y https://youtu.be/50WaknHjSKk https://youtu.be/ww4IX4D9-6M https://youtu.be/p... read more

What a ride it's been. Ole Mae is my savior, my guardian angel, my muse. She has miraculously stayed intact for this crazy drive, which would tear a lesser car apart. She's old dirty and beat up, but does the job well. Just like your mom!! :D I woke up with the sun in Real de Catorce to find myself right next to a church surrounded by a stone wall beneath a little mountain. I walked up most of the way for amazing morning landscapes. I saw a few people who barely seemed to care that a random gringo had been sleeping in his car by the road. I spent a few hours walking around "the town of stones and dust" I call it. It sits in a valley between mountains, and everything is stones: the ... read more
