Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

This is our first real blog! We have arrived safely after a tedious 11 hour flight to find we are about the only tourists in Mexico City right now, unsurprisingly. There are a few face masks and hand gel handed out at restaurants and public places, but so far no flu for us. We have been here 2 days and did the Centro Historico yesterday (see the photos of the ruins, cathedral and Aztec dancers) including visiting some 700 year old ruins in the centre of the city, discovered only 30 years ago! We then went and joined what seemed like [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

26th APRIL 2009 - SHARING WITH A PSYCHO, MASKING UP, ORGANISING & EXPLORING!!! The nights sleep did not go too well. I kept waking up to a girl who kept coming into the room and talking at the top of her voice with no consideration for those of us who were in bed. I assumed she was on the phone and on her 3rd time of entering the room at around 3.30am, I was getting rather niggled by it!! I was going to say something until I opened one eye and saw the size of her. She would have eaten me [View Full Entry]

25th APRIL 2009 - ARRIVAL, PIG FLU & SLEEP!! The flight to Mexico wasn't cracking. We had some good roomy seats in front of the emergency exit and we were sat together but that was as good as it got. No meal, 3 hour flight, just got off to sleep and the lights come on bringing drinks and cookies around. I have a drink and just settle again before the lights come on again to bring immigration and customs forms around. I fill that in and settle again when it is just about time to land. So much for getting some [View Full Entry]

24/4/09 = A painful flight to Mexico :( Oh no. Terrible, terrible sleep, if any at all. Woke up just after midnight with an awful feeling in legs; fluctuated between pure, burning pain and an unbelievably, painfully sensitive itch. Itchy like 1000 sandfly bites all clumped together in one spot. Got out of bed in darkness and rushed to put more savalon. Was in dimly lit bathroom that noticed how bad rash had become. It had spread all down back of both calves. Could no longer see skin, just 10,000’s of red semolina lumps all merged together. What is it? Had [View Full Entry]

Hola! (English here and Español abajo) Well, I’ve been back from East Arica for about two months now, so it’s about time I jetted off again…! Since I’ve been back I’ve done some work producing newsletters back at the community organisation I've been working for in North Wales, had an ace trip with Harry to Paris and Madrid (where we watched the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Real), attended a fantastic University reunion in a cottage we hired just near my house, had my Mexican mate Gregorio over to visit, and g [View Full Entry]

Okay. So this sucks. We have to leave in like half an hour to take me to the airport. And theoretically I will be in Nicaragua by tonight. Although I only have a 25 minute layover in Panama and I can see things going wrong... with my luggage ending up in Managua while I sleep in Panama. So I don't really want to leave. Let me rephrase that --- how in the hell do I go back to the mountain with no running water or food diversity where nothing will have changed and where Lenin will be the only one interested [View Full Entry]
