Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

We stay in Condessa in a reasonably priced hotel. Our room has a bedroom and dining area that is seperated by an orange and blue wall that has several holes cut into it. I go out and get a take out pizza and crep with chips. I buy coke to mix with some cheap rum that we have bought and a few beers. We lie in bed watching movies and chill. The next day we rise late and take a taxi to my favourite hostel 'Hostel la Mapina' in Central Historical where you can get a bag of laundry for fifty [View Full Entry]

We decided to stay in Condessa for a change from the Central Historical district of Mexico City. Condessa is a more bohemian environment with cafes, resturaunts and art galleries. We give the taxi driver the address of a resonably priced hotel and point ot it's location on a map. The driver drops us off at what we think is the hotel we asked for but it is actually Condessa DF which is three times as expensive as the one we asked for but we decide to stay possibly as we were confused by the big chocolate coloured dog that was manning [View Full Entry]

The messaure of a good company is how they deal with things when they go wrong. We booked several internal flights in Mexico that we intended to use for two trips. One to catch the Copper Canyon train from Los Mochis. The others to visit Mayan temples to the East of Mexico from Mexico city to Villamosa, Villamosa to Merida and Merida back to Mexico city. I had left the tickets to visit the Mayan temples in London and had called BA on 31st of October who informed me that I would be able to pick up replacement tickets at any [View Full Entry]

This entry finds us at the Mexico City Int'l airport in the last bit of a 4 hour layover. We were surprised to find "Internet Libre (free)" as a wireless server available. Lily has been enjoying the wide open territory of the airport and has been walking up a storm. It's been amazing and exhausting to keep up with at the same time (a 19 month-old ditching 4 adults!). The day started off with a good scare. We're blessed to have my Uel's parents joining us on this trip. They almost didn't make it due to a discrepancy between his mom's [View Full Entry]

After much deliberation, Mircea and I decided to head to Cancun in mid October to celebrate my 10-03 and her 10-28 birthday. Being my first trip ever, I was ecstatic. We stayed in at the Flamingo hotel on the hotel zone for one week. Never been on a plane before, you can just imagine the nervous wreck I was being that I had to take a total of FIVE planes throughout the trip! I calmed down and really enjoyed the experience. We made stops in two different states, Mexico and Mazatlan (which I was only in for about an hour so [View Full Entry]

First look at el DF
Building
Penelope en el DF!

We scan the roof tops of Mexico citys historical district from a balcony near the roof of our hotel. It looks like an old European town with many domed church spires and ornatly carved decoration. A thick layer of dust covers the cobbeld, car and people jammed streets. Jewellery stores line the pavements. The main square has an ice rink and all the buildings surrounding it are drapped in festive tinsle and lights. I eat chicken enchiladas and am very suspicious that there is some pig derivative in the delicious refried beans. I am a fallen vegeterian, a sinner in the [View Full Entry]

Miguel picked me up at the airport as he had been as kind as to offer me to stay with his family until I left for Cuba. It was so nice to walk into the arrival hall and see a friendly face waiting for me; it was so nice to see a friend I knew from before. We took a taxi back to his house, and I have to say I was overwhelmed by all the cars, people and the noise in this city. We got to his apartment in the late evening, and I got introduced to his mother, father [View Full Entry]

Finally found a hostel with internet, so here goes again! Am so behind might try and do a mammoth session now to get up to date. Am in an internet cafe in Merida eating almond M&Ms. Back to last Thursday, 27th November, still in Mexico City. We had intentions of getting up early and going to the National Anthropological Museum as the guide book said you´d need two days to see everything properly. We ended up having a bit of a lie in, and went for a wander through Chapultepec Park next to the museum first as was such a nice [View Full Entry]

As our most incredible year draws to a slighty premature close we thought we´d share some of the world´s oddities and idiots that we´ve met along the way. Did you know There is a town in New Zealand called ´Clive´. Now we´re sure it´s probably pronounced ´clee-vay´ or something equally stupid, but knowing the Kiwis and their simple honest nature it´s just possible that it´s named after a bloke called Clive. Ah yes, Clive just down the road from 'Dave' if you hit 'Phil' you´ve gone too far - priceless. There is a god. Yes once and for all there are [View Full Entry]

Arrived safely in Mexico City on Monday afternoon, though the airline had kindly broken off my zip on my bag so I'm not able to zip away the straps now! Got the metro from the airport to the hostel, which only cost MEX$2 (about 10p or 30c), was an experience in itself. The hostel did free dinners which was yum, and I was a bit sad and had an early night since I hadn't had much sleep on the concrete seat at JFK airport. The next morning I got up early to go out to the Monarch butterfly reserve. I got [View Full Entry]
