Last time I did this trip in 2014 it would have been nice to see these ruins near the Mexican-Guatemalan border but it would have been very difficult due to the fact that I had very little cash, only credit and debit cards. Fast forward 5 years armed with the experience of the last attempt and I made sure I would be able to see Yaxchilán this time. The name has been translated into several different meanings but eventually settled on "Green Stones" by a 19th century Mayan archaeologist. $US ≈ 19 Mexican pesos ($M) ≈ 7.6 Guatemalan quetzales (Q) Frontera Corozal Back of beyond border crossing into Mexico from the equally back of beyond in Guatemala. Today is the first day here in the Lacandon Jungle, and first day that I've ever been to Mayan ruins. The one we went to today, as you can see, is the Yaxchilán ruins which are accessed by boat through the Usamacinta river which is situated between Mexico and Guatemala. The boats are long and skinny and have a cover so that we won't get sunburned along the way. The ride to the ruins was relatively uneventful, though it was mildly exciting to be between two countries. I didn't keep track of how long it took but it was quite a long ride, even with a motor. On arrival, we had to sign in and everything at the front desk, and then our coordinator told us to pair up with whoever and decide for ourselves ... read more

(Day 787 on the road)The first thing our collectivo (minibus) driver did as we set out from San Cristobal towards Aqua Azul was to cross himself vigorously. We weren't sure if that was because we were about to drive right through Zapatista country, or if he routinely handed over the fate of the minibus to his God, but it wasn't very comforting, no matter how we looked at it. But once we realised that we had a sheer madman for a driver, maybe we should have crossed ourselves as well. Latin America is well known for its high numbers of often fatal bus crashes, and I am really hoping not to be part of any tragic statistic during my travels here. It is a phenomenon that never fails to amaze me: Here in Mexico, and in ... read more

On 5th May we went to Mexico. Easy enough to get on the right bus and we were put into the front seats by the driver. Four hours down a bumpy, half-made road to Bethel where passports are stamped out of Guatemala. Then another half an hour of bumpy road to La Technica where we paid 100 Qs for a lancha across to Frontera Corazol. We stayed in the Jaguar ecolodge which I kept thinking of as a reservation. I guess that's unkind - it's an economic project for the local people - so they can earn a living without chopping down and burning the rainforest. Yes, that is a real issue here. Somewhere there must be a balance between preserving this essential and beautiful resource and actually allowing people to feed their families. The forest ... read more

Another day, another temple or two! Decided to stay in El Panchan another night (mainly because the pizza there that I´d seen people eating the night before looked delicious!) and visit some more temple ruins which are close to the Guatemalan border. First I spent hours on a bus to get to a river where I went on a boat for 45 minutes to get to Yaxchilan. The ruins here were really nice. As it is a bit of a hassle to get there, there were hardly any other tourists there which was nice. Also saw some cute monkeys hanging in the trees and a few little snakes- yikes! Then back along the river and more bus journeys to get to Bonmpak- temple ruins that were only discovered 60 years ago. The main attraction here are ... read more

Yaxchilan is an ancient Maya city situated in the jungle. We reached the Yaxchilan by boat. On our way we saw a varied wildlife across the river. We even saw a caiman on a rock in the river. Yaxchilan (which was abandoned around AD 810) is one of the most important pre-Hispanic cities in the Usumacinta region.... read more
