Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Campeche, June of 2008: First decide what you want to do, then determine how to do it! We know we want to travel Mexico. It was a Wednesday in June of 2008 and Chuck received an email notification of roundtrip airfare to Cancun for $120. This we could do! We decided we would rent a car in Cancun and drive to Campeche. The drive from Cancun to Campeche can be done in about 6 hours. We have friends in Merida, which is along the way, so we stopped there for a couple of nights before going to Campeche. While in Merida [View Full Entry]

Really Cool Town

Ahh, Campeche. Very cool town. The old part of the city (where I stayed) is still surrounded by massive walls that were built back in the day to protect the city from pirates. As time passed and the threat of pirate invasions no longer endangered the city, parts of the walls were torn down. However, a lot of it is still standing and it looks awesome. The buildings located in the old city share a similar 17th century architecture. The roads are all stone. At the Parque Principal is where all the locals hang out. They get their shoe's shined or [View Full Entry]

Holaaaaaaaargh
The Yucatan Peninsula. 22nd July - 29th July After 13 hours on a bus that seemed to make more stops than was really necessary, we arrived in Campeche bus station glad to be able to stretch our legs again. We took one of the local minibuses into town to get to the Hostal Pirata (Pirate Hostel i.e. a hostel with loads of pirate related ornaments and artifacts), which was on a quiet street within the towns old walls. We took a stroll around town and to the seafront before going back to the Hostel for a much needed siesta. In the [View Full Entry]

Day 12: Friday 11 July - Hot and Bothered in Campeche Arrive at 3am in Campeche, on the Yucatan peninsula. My hostel is in a prime spot overlooking the main plaza. Not so lucky with the room, its like sleeping in a sauna! Awake hot and bothered after a poor nights sleep. Have to do laundry in the morning (hope that answers your question Kev??!!). Leave hostel in late morning and wander Campeche's colonial streets to find a tour agency. I really want to see the Mayan ruins of Calakmul and Uxmal, particularly Calakmul whilst I'm here. My feet are killing [View Full Entry]

Xpujil (pronounces Shpuheel) is the name of a town, not exactly that I was in the whole weekend (not exactly weekend, as it´s over and it´s only Saturday night. Yes, we came back way early, I´ll get to that), I stayed there last night, but mostly we were there to see Calakmul. That´s just not a choice on the list. Why not? I have no idea, cause it´s one of the four most important Classic Mayan sites. Probably because it´s in the middle of a nature reserve and 60 miles from the closest highway. Ridiculous. Taxi drivers in Xpujil are probably [View Full Entry]
