So , the final week of the trip. I am writing this in the Hilton Mexico city airport, in the terminal building, we leave from here tomorrow at 12.55. Firstly, I will fill you in on what we have been up to and then as always some reflections on the trip. Last Tuesday we were up early and set off in our hire car for Edzna. The car was a Chevrolet Beat and the gear box was as clunky as hell, Chris didn't really enjoy driving it. It was an hour to drive and unlike Uxmal wasn't at all busy. It was M$65 entrance, under £3 and we got a guide at the site called Elvis, yes seriously. He was great and he made a real effort to make the place come alive. The site is ... read more

It’s our last day in Campeche and second last day in Mexico. Despite being by the sea the humidity is very high. We have a leisurely start at around 9 and by 5 past I’m soaked in sweat. Breakfast of scrambled eggs and then a walk around the square. The girls go to the market and a museum. A dog befriends them and waits for them outside the market and follows them till he buys them a hamburger. They name him Ratty. I head back to the hotel to work on the blog and my photos. Wilko is very keen to see the sunset. First he has identified a cantina for a beer. I’m sceptical as it doesn’t look overly inviting for foreigners, but I am proved wrong and our host is clearly very excited to ... read more

Breakfast at Santa Rosa is lovely. We interrupt the Monday team meeting as we arrive. Seems to me that there are about 5 staff per guest assuming we are the only guests which seems likely as we haven’t seen anyone else since we’ve been here. With Wilko navigating we head off for Uxmal. The roads we have experienced in Mexico have generally been very good and the drivers are also easy to deal with. There are a lot of motorcyclists and also a lot of 3 wheeled motorcycle things that usually contain a whole family or just your mate who you can talk to as you cruise along. The only issue is that they do about 5kph. We arrive at Uxmal and as per usual there are very few people here. Again you require two tickets ... read more

From doing research online it was apparent that this Mayan city was difficult to get to, a blog titled “how the hell do you get to Calakmul” revealed the difficulty, at least for the authors. Thanks to their hard work and stress it made my journey rather easy. Although, it took ten hours of travel including sitting in a Burger King playing Football Manager for three hours waiting for a connecting bus. My destination was the town of Xpujil (Esh-poohill), a small rural town with nothing except a few hotels. This is the closest town to Calakmul, I think around 120km away. The journey to Calakmul is 45 minutes spent driving down the highway and around an hour an half down a pot hole laden road through the jungle. I was advised to take plenty of ... read more

(Cj writes) I’m very glad that we’re doing this trip the ‘wrong’ way around, because the Mayan sites are just getting better and better as we progress.Tikal, for example, was monumental - but heavily restored - ruins. Impressive, but not engaging. Uxmal (‘Ooshmal’) and Campeche have had the most marvellous carvings - almost all original (although they’ve had to be restored to their proper positions) - very crisp detail, and giving you (ie me) a real sense of how these cities really looked. Sc adds......Campeche itself is a old ... read more

Edificio de los Cinco Pisos, loosely translated as "building of five floors," is the principal temple at Edzna, my most recently visited Mayan ruin near the city of Campeche. Coming in low season mid-week and entering the site as soon as it opened at 8am meant I was the only visitor for a little more than 2 hours, save for hundreds of scurrying iguanas and a mating pair of vultures. Easy half day trip on local transport, not to be missed. $US ≈ 19 Mexican pesos ($M) CampecheEven though I was here for almost a week last November, Campeche has not lost it's charm. It's surprisingly spartan tourist infrastructure means it is not overrun like other towns on the Ruta Maya. Accommodation and food Stayed again in a spotless AC dorm at Viatger Inn for the ... read more

Several years ago while puttering around Chiapas and Yucatán, I don't think I had ever even heard of Calakmul, a remote Mayan site still mostly buried in the thick jungle close to the Guatemalan border. No longer the case and with hordes of tourists ready to overrun the place, this trip was the perfect opportunity to visit these ruins. It was high on my list of objectives second only to the Patriots most triumphant victory, of course. $US ≈ 19 Mexican pesos ($M) XpujilFriendly, unassuming town close to Calakmul and other nearby ruins. Easy connections to just about anywhere in Mexico with 1st & 2nd class buses passing thru 24-7. Accommodation and food Quickly found a serviceable single room with my own bathroom at Hotel Gran Garra del Jaguar close to the small, central bus station ... read more

Headed out at noon leaving our heaven spot at Isla Aguada. Campeche city the capitol of the state a population of 750,000. The state has a large indigenous population which is scattered through the interier and north along the Yucatan border and center areas. Unlike states like Chiapis that has smaller population. The topography is basically flat with small hills . The coastal areas are very dry but surprisingly heavily wooded jungle in the Interior that is hot and humid. Arrived mid afternoon and found a nice spot on the grass at Kintta Parque Aquatica, after a short smooth trip over good roads and only one toll 180 pesos. Needs less to say a dip in the pool on this hot hot day was all one needed to feel fabulous. As they do in Mexico, Manana. ... read more

We left by truck leaving our RVs behind that could not make the roads to Calcakmul. Our goal Escarcega in the state of Campeche and find a hotel room for the night. All 12 of us and 5 dogs , in 2 pickup and a jeep. The trip there in day light was hot and scenic, the mood was exciting for a mystery venture . But as usual in Mexico after 3 shots we found a hotel with enough rooms (7) that we needed and the dogs were welcome. Now reminding you this is a small city in Mexico from 1 room to almost full for a price of 600 peos, they served the cervezas, they made us dinner and to boot............Breakfast. sent us off in the morning with nothing but good feelings and smiles.
