We woke to the sound of steady rain falling, thankfully it had stopped by the time we left for the ferry. It was only a short ride and we got there and on board with plenty of time to spare. The conditions were quite calm and the trip took just over two and a half hours arriving at 10:45am. We then had to collect our luggage and bikes and go through customs (as we had travelled from the US to Canada). At border security we went through as a group. The conversation went something like this . . . . Border Security Officer (BSO): So are you going to leave anything in the country? Tom: No Mark: No Jeff: No Mark: Hey Jeff, what about that present for Edna? Jeff: Oh yeah, I have a present ... read more

We got into Vancouver way ahead of schedule at 4:30am but baggage was going to be unloaded until 6am. All of us had an uncomfortable nights sleep, the only draw back of our very enjoyable train ride. After we collected our bikes we headed back to the Storage Facility were it all began. The plan is to cut back on our gear for the few days riding we'll do on Vancouver Island. On the way there we passed by what was called the City Farmer which was a large garden the size of a few house lots. These had been supplied by the council and maintained by a group of dedicated people intent on informing and educating locals and school groups on the benefits of sustainability, re-use, composting and gardening in general. Jeff must have a ... read more

Today we will be travelling to the ski resort town of Fernie which is up over the range in British Columbia. First stop is the very picturesque Lundbreck Falls which are in the foothills of the Rockies just off the Crowsnest Highway. Emma and Michael lived in the small settlement of Coleman in Crowsnest Pass (“the Pass”) until very recently, and our main reason for coming up this way is for them to show us the places we’ve heard them talk about from when they lived here. We move on to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre which is near the eastern end of the Pass. This is a series of displays about the 1903 tragedy in which more than a hundred thousand tons of rock from the adjacent Turtle Mountain slid into the valley in less ... read more

The thing about crossing a time zone yesterday was when we got up it was one hour colder! There was plenty of light but no warmth at all. Just very cold mountain air. We had breakfast and set off down the steep dirt road to the highway. I had 3 layers on and was shivering. Graeme had rugged up too, but Tom and Jeff didn't (no sense no feeling I guess). We rode 21km into Golden just trying to warm up, the cold cut right through. At Golden we got some supplies and headed for the nearest coffee shop. The climbing started as soon as we left the town. The locals called it "10 Mile Hill" and it was every bit of 16kms up hill. To balance out the hard work was the continued extraordinary scenery ... read more

Hyder, Alaska We have arrived in Stewart, BC which is just outside the very southern tip of Alaska. This is the area of the Hyder Grizzly bears and the boardwalk where you can see the bears when they come to eat. Mom and Jake were here 6 years ago and it was great fun. We are going to be here for 4 days. I can’t see the bears because ”No food” is allowed on the boardwalk. We have been traveling for several days on a daily basis since we left Fairbanks. Some nights have been in pretty primitive RVSites with limited WiFi access. But aMom continues with picture taking. One site was last night at Watson Lake area where we were in a dry campground on the side of a pretty lake. They stayed there last ... read more

After much discussion we decided to have breakfast at the hotel and be on the road by 7:30am. We have a massive day in front of us and we need to be on the road early. As it turn out, we set off on time for a change. There was no wondering when the uphill sections would start today. As soon as we left town the road pointed up and we started climbing. For the most part the gradient wasn't too bad but every so often we'd get a steep section of road that would last for a kilometer or so. The morning air was quite cool and although there was plenty of light the sun hadn't made it over the massive peaks in the east. We were riding about 30 meters above a river, with ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Revelstoke August 25th 2019

Thanks to Graeme we had a fine selection for breakfast today - porridge, yoghurt, begals and soft boiled eggs. The begal has become a staple of our meals when forced to fend for ourselves. It travels well, is dense and filling and tastes good to boot. We aimed to leave by 8am and left by 8:20am. Forecast was for some early morning showers after overnight rain. We certainly heard the rain overnight but as we set off from Sicamous there was no rain about. Today's ride was a short 71kms from Sicamous to Revelstoke along Highway 1 with about 500m of climbing. We travelled easily in the cool morning air and the rain seemed to be holding off. We were all waiting for a significant climb but nothing came. Instead there were a number of small ... read more

We had a big day of 128kms in front of us, so we had a good breakfast at the hotel and sneaked a few things from the buffet into our jerseys for morning tea. We were riding from Kelowna to Verona (54km) and then on to Sicamous (74kms). Our ride out of Kalowna was along Lake Okanagan again. Much nicer scenery and much less noisy than the direct route on the highway. Not too far out of town we passed our first garage sale and made the mandatory stop for Jeff and Tom to have a peruse. Ironically it was me who bought something not them (tools for the bikes). A short while later we passed a bike shop and made a stop to check pressure in our tyres after the battering they had taken over ... read more

In Dante's Inferno there are seven levels that you descend through on your way to hell. As far as the Kettle Valley Rail Trail is concerned, I think we started at Level 8! But today we ascended through all levels and saw the Rail Trail in all it's grandeur. In a 15km section there are 18 trestle bridges, 2 tunnels and numerous cuttings. On display was the undeniable determination of the Canadian government back in the day to build a railway where one should not have been. The trail hugged the sides of the Myra Canyon on it's way north to transport goods to wherever they needed to go. The railway is long gone, proving to costly to maintain and keep open, especially during the winter. What's left, in this well maintained mecca for day trippers ... read more

We had a decision to make - How to get to Kelowna? Our original plan was to go via the rail trail around the Myra Canyon and in to Kalowna. The Myra Canyon was the whole point of taking the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, it has 22 trestle bridges and numerous tunnels. But because the trail had been so bad, we reconsidered this option. Instead we would take the rail trail part way and then detour straight to Kelowna and head out to the Myra Canyon the next day. Settled! We had a good breakfast at Denny's and headed out on the trail. From the town of Penticton, and for the first 20kms the trail was very well groomed and easy to ride on. It was all up hill though at a constant 2% to 4% ... read more
