Whistler At Last! That was the feeling I had as the bus pulled into park. Not that it has been a long trip but for me I have been waiting to get here since about 1998 when I first read about this place in a ski magazine. As we got out of the bus the excitement was high as we realised just how massive this place was. The valley is big and the mountains are massive. We got a map from the information desk and realised after walking around with all our bags and the help from to Aussie girls that first we were heading in the wrong direction and it was going to be way too hard to get to the HOUSE department we had to check in to our staff accommodation.
So we found the cabs got a lift up a massive hill which would of killed us carrying all our gear. We had the coolest cab driver he was in his 40’s and had just started working up here the day before so he was pretty pumped about being here and gave us more help then you would ever get from any other cabby in your
life. He also told us about his band called A Lot of Led (I think) which of course is a Led Zepplin tribute band, so we found out the real reason he was up here and it was to rock out to the crowds a few nights a week.
So we finally went into House Department and got the keys for our place which are swipe cards (it is so nice not having actual keys) and if any of you have travelled with me then you will realise I don’t exactly have the best luck with swipe keys. I only got my card working yesterday 1 week after we got here. It still doesn’t work 100% correct I have to use a side door to get into the building rather than the main door. SO after getting the keys, Tristan from House decided he would be nice and give us a lift down to our place as he lives in the same building. So he took us out to his Honda Civic and when he saw all our gear I could see it all over his face ‘why did i offer.’ With some pushing and groaning and a dodgy
fit and lots of our stuff hanging out of the boot (sorry ‘trunk’) we packed ourselves in and just barely closed the door. Once we got to Brio, our little area were our building is, we then were made aware by Tristan that we were on the 4th and top floor and there were no lifts so we banged and crashed our bags up the stairs and Tristan was still helping us for some reason, Maybe he just thought it was comical for whatever reason we was very happy he helped us.
Our place is a modest two bedroom apartment with four single beds that are all different, a nice little kitchen with a toaster that doesn’t pop your bread- learnt that the hard way, thanks to me wanting to have toast in the morning we nearly had to evacuate the building cause of the burnt toast. We laugh about it now but the panic at the time was right up there fuelled by the thought of all our neighbours hating us cause they had to stand out in the rain because I didn’t watch my toast.
We have done the walk into the main village many times
now and are starting to get know the Village very well. We have about a ten minute hilly walk to get our groceries but it is a nice walk, even in the rain which it is doing a lot of at the moment, it has been raining for the last 5 days and does not look like it will give up soon but that is fine with me cause rain in the village normally means snow on the mountain. So we are slowly starting to get set up in our place and still don’t have our house mates but I am sure they will be here any day now, so lets hope they are nice people. Amanda and I have also started Yoga, which is in the village, in this nice little studio with a pretty good view as well. But since I have done nothing but walk around caring bags and climb up hills and glaciers I was pretty stiff after the first class. I felt like a piece of Styrofoam trying to bend in half without snapping, but I know it will all come back to me before the season starts on the 27th of this month.
So now Amanda and I are just walking around getting to know the place and waiting to start work on Wednesday. It time for money to start coming back into our accounts rather than disappearing out of them.
So till next time hope everyone is well. Drop us a line as well.
